Mum is 85, nearly 86. Fairly healthy for her age, (goes to the over 60's 'gym' club twice a week for example) and still fairly active.
BUT, she has recently fallen over and broken her collar bone. It was a stupid fall - could have happened to anyone, rather than her being unsteady on her feet if you see what I mean. If I tell you what happened, it will out me as it was so silly!!!
Anyway, I'm googling broken collar bone, and find this….
"A collar bone break can lead to serious infection in seniors. There is actually a very high morbidity rate where these type of breaks and seniors are concerned. The body's ability to heal after this type of break in patients 65 years and older is greatly compromised."

Now I'm really worried she's going to die.

I know it's only Google, but can anyone offer me some reassurance? Please?

Those words appear to be taken from a link to ‘nursing home injuries’ from a nursing home abuse guide, so of course it’s going to be alarming as the outcomes are very different to patients with breaks outside of abusive nursing homes.
The very next paragraph is
The standard of care in even the most expensive of nursing homes/residential homes can be at best “bad” largely in part because there is so few checks and balances in place when it comes to qualified staff members. As a matter of fact, many of the staff members are not only “not highly qualified” but have been convicted of a crime.

There is no such alarming information if you Google collar bone injuries in the elderly NHS

Shit! Glad she's not in a nursing home then.
Ok, so that's why it's bad to google stuff. I think I just read that and started panicking.

My mum recently broke her collarbone and hip (among other injuries).

Her hip was replaced instantly as we were told it could be life-threatening but no mention of her collarbone being dangerous.

I'm sure it will be fine, especially if she was fit and well beforehand. I hope she makes a quick recovery.

My mum managed to break both collar bones about 3 years ago at the age of 75. She was only in hospital for a few days and in a nursing home for rehab for 4 weeks. At no point was she really unwell or was there any suggestion that she would die. I think I did post a panicky thread on here asking for advice though.

She did have difficulty in lifting her arms afterwards so needed help with hair washing and needed clothes that were easy to get on. Otherwise she wasn't any different.

If your mum is coming from a position of being quite fit (for an 85 year old) then she is likely to have a good recovery as my mum did have some other health issues anyway.
