To apply for another role so quickly?

I’ve been in my role for 9 months - senior management role in a large organisation.

Previously I was in a senior management position at a medium sized organisation for a year, and before that a middle management position in a large organisation for 8 years (while my kids were young, so not much progression in that time, but became very knowledgeable in a specific area).

I’m 46, for context. My kids are now late teens and I’ve got some of my ambition and drive back with regards to my career.

I’ve seen a job ad for my dream job. Executive leadership, a step up. But I’ve only been in my current role for 9 months and I’m wondering whether it’s bad form to start applying for other jobs so soon.

I actually really like my current role and feel settled here, but I’m aware that age is not on my side and if I want to progress I should push myself and can’t necessarily fanny around. The role that’s come up is also quite rare, as in it doesn’t come up often in my sector, and I’ve just seen that two of the other executive leadership team are people I have worked with in the past and had good relationships with.

I should apply and see if I get an interview at least, shouldn’t I? Or should I get another year or two under my belt in this role before I start aiming higher?

Opinions, please! 🙏

I’m aware that age is not on my side and if I want to progress I should push myself I don't agree with this really, you're only 46, but if you want to apply it's fine.

Cherry321 · 11/01/2024 16:04

Go for it. The interview process will no doubt take a few weeks and if you get it, you'll have to give notice, so it will be at least a year and it won’t look too odd on your cv. Sometimes the dream role comes up but the timing is wrong - but you have to explore it as it might not come up again for a while.

OhGetFucked · 11/01/2024 16:06

Of course you should go for it, they can only decline to interview you, nothing lost by applying.

It sounds like you have plenty of experience and they'd be lucky to have you.

doodoodahdah · 11/01/2024 16:07

In my company, senior leadership switch and change fairly frequently, often doing a year before going off to do something else. No harm in applying and just seeing how things go.

And bloody hell, if 46 is getting on, then I'm screwed.

Devilsmommy · 11/01/2024 16:10

I'd go for it. You're only young once😁

DramaAlpaca · 11/01/2024 16:11

Definitely go for it. Good luck!

itsmylife7 · 11/01/2024 16:11

Do it without a doubt.

OwlWeiwei · 11/01/2024 16:19

Apply. I think honesty would be effective here - just say you are happy in your current role and wouldn't normally apply elsewhere so soon after moving (because they won't want you to do that to them) but this is a role you have wanted for some time and you couldn't ignore the opportunity.

NotYourBrain · 11/01/2024 16:23

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. And you dont have much to lose by applying.

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 11/01/2024 16:29

For those of you saying the OP is young, young in years definitely, but women in the UK hit ‘peak’ earnings at age 40, whilst men’s average pay continues to rise for another 4 years.

OP I think you should go for it! I’ve know lots of people who have left after a year for a better offer, that’s just the nature of opportunities- they don’t tend to wait until you’re ready, you have to seize them where you can.

BassoContinuo · 11/01/2024 16:31

I think it’s fine as long as you aren’t a serial job-hopper.

Ideally you’d get the year in, but nine months isn’t terrible (6 months might look suspiciously like you hadn’t passed probation)

SnowBotherer · 11/01/2024 16:32

Appply!!

moves UP aren't going to harm your reputation!!

go for it & good luck!!

Catza · 11/01/2024 16:33

I've moved for promotion approximately every 8 months in the last three years. Never regretted it and it was never questioned at the interview. In my line of work, it is impossible to be promoted within the same team so I have to move teams and organisations if I want to aim upwards.

Tallesttiptoes · 11/01/2024 16:35

By the time you start the new role, if successful, you will probably have been in this role for a year so I think it’s fine. Agree that there are levels of senior management that people progress through quickly, it’s good you’ve got the 8 years solid experience there in the background. Think I would recommend you go into the next role for minimum 2-3 years ideally though to get a bit of stability back and be able to demonstrate impact and embedding improvements and change rather than just introducing it - that is the main risk of lots of short term management roles. However it depends on the job and sector.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 11/01/2024 16:57

DO IT!

Mirabai · 11/01/2024 18:20

If you were male you wouldn’t even think twice.

thedefinitive · 11/01/2024 18:38

Definitely go for it. Life is too short!

laclochette · 11/01/2024 18:39

I don't think there's any reason not to.

If anything it'll look good that you moved up so fast!

AuntMarch · 11/01/2024 18:42

Of course apply. If they even asked about length of service you'd only have to say "this was too good an opportunity to ignore" surely

youveturnedupwelldone · 11/01/2024 18:42

Someone gave me some great advice last year:

Just apply!

idontlikealdi · 11/01/2024 18:43

Mirabai · 11/01/2024 18:20

If you were male you wouldn’t even think twice.

Exactly. I don't know why women think like this. You are in a business arrangement with your company, they get rid of you for pretty much no reason until you've been there two years, and if they wanted to, they would.

NewYearNewCalendar · 11/01/2024 18:51

Go for it.

I always though you had to stay in jobs or it would look bad. But DH has moved every year for the last few years, on promotion each time and has done really well with it.

OutYerEd · 11/01/2024 19:37

A resounding ‘go for it!’ then Grin.

The posters who said ‘a man wouldn’t think twice’ are absolutely right, of course!

Apply apply apply! And if you get the job or your company otherwise finds out you can just say you would never have left for any other job but this was the dream wnd a promotion so you couldn't turn down tej chance
