To think there's never a bad time for a sugar tax

I just heard a(nother) politician on the radio say now is not the right time for a sugar tax, due to the cost of living crisis. At the same time, he was expressing outrage at the high rates of tooth decay in children and pledging tooth-brushing lessons in primary schools. Surely a cost of living crisis is a perfectly reasonable time for a sugar tax? When families are struggling financially, it's irresponsible to appease them with cheap sugary treats that damage their children's health.

I think we are all taxed way too much on everything without seeing any benefits in public services so I wouldn't support food becoming more expensive.

The real priority should be getting everyone an NHS dentist again if they want one. This would have a much larger impact on dental health than being charged even more for food.

Make cost of living cheaper so one full time job can cover the basics then parents can cook and spend stress free time with their children outside of school hours. Changes in how our society is run need sorting before yet more taxes.

He’s thinking like a politician

sugar tax is easier/ cheaper to implement than finding the money to sort out nhs dentistry .

I would urge everyone to watch this, its fascinating and shows that taxing sugar really isn't the answer:

I agree. I read his book. Really good to have the evidence base alongside his perspective. It is an eye opener.
