Bad breath

themidimit · 10/01/2024 22:08

I feel dreadful noticing this and would never have this conversation in real life but has anyone noticed how many people have bad breath? People who I work with who are immaculately turned out in every way. I don't know if I have a really sensitive sense of smell? I take real care to brush my teeth after eating at work, never eat anything that might cause this problem when with others, chew gum when not in meetings. I hate not having a fresh mouth. Does anyone else notice this?

I don't think I've ever been close enough to my co-workers to smell their breath?
Edited to add: 5 of us work in the same room.

People who vape have disgusting breath I find. Smokers at least have a break in between but the people I work with who vape seem to have it on the go from the minute they open their eyes in the morning and it's rank.

literalviolence · 10/01/2024 22:53

I've got a very good sense of smell and can smell people's bad breath from a long way away. Yes not everyone is careful enough with their mouth cleaning.

dothehokeycokey · 10/01/2024 23:47

Oh yes there are definitely people who don't seem to have any idea how bad they smell Confused

I work in an industry where I work closely
With people on a one to one basis and I've been mask wearing again since December due to picking up so many bloody illnesses however it's a relief as it means I can't smell peoples breath again for a while

The worst is when people have cavities and don't do anything about it.

I mean clearly if others can smell rotting infected teeth surely they must notice it themselves ???!!!

I know dentists are bloody hard to come by but basic hygiene is definitely dropped in the last couple of years.

I also notice it with the smell of peoples clothing.

Not necessarily stinky but definitely worn and not washed for a while smelling.

XenoBitch · 18/01/2024 00:22

They might have issues like gum disease or tooth decay.... and there is a dental care crisis right now... many of these people may not have access to a dentist to address these issues.

BobbyBiscuits · 18/01/2024 16:30

It really shatters your illusions of someone. This one guy I knew, thought he was awesome, seemed to smell normal, known him for years. Met up again one evening at a party and his breath reeked. I was so horrified I never wanted to speak to him again. I remember teachers at school having dire bad breath and often BO. They always reeked of black coffee and fags, one maths teacher I thought something had died down there!

tty · 18/01/2024 16:33

Probably something to do with there being a dental crisis for the past 15 years. No dentists near me are taking on I had to travel 15 miles and that was for a private one

amandaoneill84 · 18/01/2024 17:03

Tonsil stones.

A lot of people have them. Although, most of time they're hidden.

I could smell my own breath till I got them removed.

It was hideous. Like something had died.

Harrietsaunt · 18/01/2024 17:07

I think a lot of people have no access to NHS dentists and just can’t afford the appointments or treatment.

It’s a dreadful state of affairs. 😡

Tracker1234 · 18/01/2024 17:13

Honestly some people just dont take care of themselves. I flew back from the Middle East a couple of months ago and sat next to a young women on the aircraft with a toddler and the Mum reeked of BO. It was horrible sitting next to someone for hours on end who clearly either didnt know she smelt so bad or couldnt care.

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 18/01/2024 17:14

Could be tonsil stones as a pp said. It doesn’t matter how fantastic your dental hygiene is they still stink if you don’t remove them quickly.

Hollyhead · 18/01/2024 17:31

I really don’t notice many people having bad breath. But it’s a bit cruel to ask don’t they realise - it’s a commonly known fact that you can’t always smell your own bad breath. DH gets bad breath related to acid reflux and doesn’t know!- he relies on me to tip him off.

Bobbotgegrinch · 18/01/2024 17:40

I get tonsil stones a lot so probably have bad breath about one week in four.

Doctors refuse to take my tonsils out so it's something I just have to live with. Once they get big enough I can poke them out with a tool, but it takes about a week between me noticing it and being able to do it.

BadgeronaMoped · 18/01/2024 17:43

I genuinely don't think some people can help it. My DH is fastidious with his dental hygiene and I noticed he had bad breath (turned out to be a rotting tooth). I did suggest it may be tonsil stones and to his horror he did have some of those. Once both problems were sorted his breath was fine again.

DRS1970 · 18/01/2024 17:45

I attended a course once and the instructor leaned over my shoulder and it smelled as if he had been eating dog shit. It was absolutely rank. 🤮🤮🤮

@Bobbotgegrinch how comes they refused you? I managed to get mine out x

These days they won't take them out unless you've had tonsillitis 7 times in the last year or 10 times in the last 2.

I don't tend to get it these days so it's not an option. I got it loads as a kid, and getting them out was talked about a few times but it never quite got to that point.

So while I rarely get tonsillitis any more, I've got holes in my tonsils from getting it frequently as a kid. Food builds up in them, and once a month or so I give birth to the grimmest smelling little white lumps ever.

DillDanding · 18/01/2024 18:21

I can’t fathom how people can be unaware of their own bad breath.

I used to work with a guy whose breath was so rancid, I could smell it across a desk. I think it came from his stomach, rather than his teeth as it was that particular ’dog shit’ smell.

Georgieporgie29 · 18/01/2024 18:22

How do you find and remove tonsil stones yourself?

BootyfuI · 18/01/2024 18:25

Lots of people don't know how to clean their teeth properly. I'm not judging because I was the same. People go through stuff.

But also, people breath will smell differently throughout the day unless we're not allowed to eat. I used to have anxiety over this.

CharmedCult · 18/01/2024 18:27

I work in quite close contact with several different people a day and yes lots of people have bad breath.

I also notice it on cashiers, taxi drivers, the woman who does my lashes, etc.

I mentioned on another thread recently that I had to address a bad breath issue with a work colleague once and she was completely unaware of it. You could smell her breath sitting across two desks from her and it smelled of dog shit.

I'm obsessed with brushing, flossing, tongue scraping, mouthwash, chewing gum, etc.

For those who get tonsil stones I can highly recommed a waterpik to blast those buggers out as soon as you spot them, no matter how small they are!
