To report this household for their parking?

We live down a culdesac street. One particular house always parks at least one car on the pavement, sometimes two (one half on the driveway/half path and the other car on the path in front of it). When they do this the path is completely impassable. When it’s just the one car you can squeeze past but you’d have no chance if you had a wheelchair/pram - on the road you go.

Past few times I’ve had to walk the dog past it I’ve deliberately brushed into it (not that that will cause any damage as I don’t wear steel armour or anything but it makes me feel better)

Anyway! Today I couldn’t get past at all so I’m going to report them to the council (I’m assuming it is council and not police?) DH has told me not to saying it’s shit stirring and it’s not a hardship for me to walk past on the road - not the point though is it??!

YABU - just walk past it and stop being a busy body

YANBU - report the bastards

Report them 👍🏼

HappyHamsters · 10/01/2024 19:29

Report, they are causing an obstruction.

How many people in wheelchairs or with prams need to get by in a cul de sac? If it was a main road or thoroughfare I could understand your frustration, but no so much in a cul de sac.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/01/2024 19:41

Sounds like my neighbours.

It’s called ableism. Maybe not deliberately if they’ve never pushed a wheelchair about, but ignorance is no excuse.

They won’t care. They only see themselves.

Report them. Yes you could walk in the road but that’s not the point as a pedestrian you should have clear access on the pavement.

A lot of these cul de sacs have cut through walkways though.

Stick an A4 notice asking them to park more considerately to their car, right in the driver’s line of sight should do it.

Make sure you use a nice strong glue and do it in the middle of the night of course.

In a cul-de-sac, it's not as big of an issue as a street, but an issue nonetheless.

Personally, I would speak to the neighbours in question first; they may not realise they are inconveniencing people. How many people do you think are being inconvenienced each day? How many wheelchair or mobility scooter users in your cul-de-sac? Perhaps you could all nicely speak to them together. It seems out of order to go to the council if you haven't spoken to them first.

Is there somewhere else they can park? People are often more responsive if you can offer them a good solution.

You can report on fixmystreet, will prob be ignored

That's fair, and if that's the case, I change my view.

I grew up with my mum as a wheelchair user and very much learned to pick my battles

Every single day without fail I come home and there is a car parked across my driveway. The council tell me it’s a police matter and the police tell me it’s a council matter. I honestly don’t think the council will give a rats arse if it’s anything like mine. They weren’t bothered that a car had blocked ours in when I went into labour and my husband couldn’t drive me to the hospital. They don’t give a shit.

If I lived in the spoon end of a cul-de-sac, I'd be perfectly happy to walk on the road and rather pleased that if it were ever needed, a fire engine could get up to my house rather than not being able to get past because of too mant cars in the 'handle' bit of the spoon.
