My sister received news today she would not be able to return to work full time as there isn't capacity. She was a little annoyed as her youngest will be in school and she's bored at home.
It got me thinking, the vast majority of my female friends and family work part time. It would be my dream to work part time but it's not feasible at the moment. Um curious to see how many women work part time, and what is there reason behind it? But also full time as well.
My reason is simple- I was single parent and I couldn't pay my mortgage on one wage.

Full time but I'd like to drop a half day. Haven't until very recently been in the financial position to ever consider it.

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/01/2024 20:03

I work 80%. Very lucky that dh earns a very good wage, about four times mine. I am run ragged taking kids to so many extra curricular things that I need that extra day to tidy the house and go to the supermarket and do other stuff that otherwise wouldn’t get done. Realise I’m very lucky to have that option. Husband appreciates it because me having the day off makes his life easier too.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 10/01/2024 20:04

Full time. Always full time. Never seen my type of role offered as a part time option. If I ask for it now I think that will be taken as a sign of not being committed. And I'd end up with the same work load, less pay and less chance of being promoted. Once we are mortgage free and the kids have finished university I'll get off the tread mill.

Westsussex · 10/01/2024 20:04

I was 5 to 6 days a week since school until approx 2 years ago when I was made redundant and found a job working 25 hours per week earning a similar amount.

I absolutely love my job, I have never been so happy, but we're trying very hard to have a baby and my hours are 4pm until 8pm due to the clients we work with being in the US. So it looks like I'll need to leave my role at some point for my baby. I don't know what my future will look like work wise and am trying (and failing) not to
panic too much :)

Xx

Part time initially due to having kids and wanting to soend time with them. Youngest starts pre-school full time in September and I am staying part time so I finally have some time for me - after 7 years of juggling work and childcare I'm looking forward to having a bit of time to myself.

Biggest regret is that I didn't do part time before I had kids.. I could have had a brilliant work life balance!

CrushingOnRubies · 10/01/2024 20:10

@DontBeAPrickDarren it is very tempting!

GooglyPop17 · 10/01/2024 20:10

Work part time so I have time to ride my horses.

Happyhappyday · 10/01/2024 20:10

Full time. One DC. I like my job, my career is important to me, I enjoy working. My job is also not that stressful and I don’t work that many hours and am paid pretty well. Also have extreme flexibility so can still be there for DC as much as I would be if I worked part time.

SouthLondonMum22 · 10/01/2024 20:11

Full time. I work in a male dominated industry and would be ''mummy tracked'' if I went part time.

To be fair, even if that wasn't an issue I would work full time.

WelshNerd · 10/01/2024 20:14

Part time. Can't be arsed with any more tbh.

LoveSandbanks · 10/01/2024 20:15

I was a sahm for over 15 years bringing up our children (all with special needs) and went back into the work place a few years ago. Had a few jobs before deciding to go back into IT (my original training and career) and am full time now. I work in cyber security and part-time jobs are tricky to come about. I'm keen to progress which necessitates full time but I really love my job (sorry)

Didimum · 10/01/2024 20:16

Full time, and always have done. Two kids, and husband also works full time. We could afford for me to go part time, but I absolutely love my job and wouldn’t cut my hours down. Even split parental leave with DH and went back after 6 months.

LakieLady · 10/01/2024 18:36

Part-time, because I'm old and knackered and semi-retired.

This is so me.

Thepossibility · 10/01/2024 20:16

Part time to be available for the kids.
Will go full time when they are all in secondary.

29andLost · 10/01/2024 20:17

Full time. Because being at home with kids wrecks my mental health.
(Yes I chose to have them but hindsight is a wonderful thing)

muckandmerriment · 10/01/2024 20:19

Part time. Term time only. Partly due to the nature of the work I do and partly because I was at home for about 7 years and entered my current employment as a volunteer to begin with - it was a complete career change from what I did pre children. Funding for the service I work in (local authority) doesn't cover more hours so it suits for me to do the hours in term time when our service is busiest, rather than do less hours a week but over the whole year. But also because I like having time to myself & the holidays off. I worked full time in corporate jobs for 15 years before having kids, never going back.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 10/01/2024 20:19

Full time, as I'm a single parent with 2 mortgages to pay.
Although even if those weren't my circumstances, I can't imagine not working full time.

Working full time is better for my mental health too. I went back after 12 weeks and instantly felt much better.

user09767 · 10/01/2024 20:21

Part time (3 days a week) I have two DC when the youngest starts school all being well I hope to increase to 4 days as need the money.

It doesn't actually make much financial sense at the minute for me to work more as my salary isn't the highest. My youngest gets 30 free hours which he uses over my 3 days. If I work another day I have to pay £60 a day extra. I worked it out and would earn an extra £50 a month after paying the fees.

We have had to make cuts to make it work we live in a cheaper area and have one car.

I do love my work life balance but it isn't the plan forever.

Oblomov23 · 10/01/2024 20:21

Part time since having kids, many moons ago. Work 4 days now. It's perfect. Will never work full time again if I can help it.

SaltyGod · 10/01/2024 20:22

Full time: interesting jobs in my field are all full
time. Part time roles are rarely interesting enough to be worth the hassle.

I work for the mental stimulation and sense of success, so for me that out-weights the benefits of flexibility that you get with part time.

I’m all or nothing and so I will one day just stop cold, no wind down or part time option.

I've never worked part time in my life. I'm 30. I started working (on and off, Saturday jobs and summer holiday jobs) at 13. I've got one child. My current job, whilst fulltime, is fully remote with flexitime and my core hours fit inside the school day, so it works for me. I'm genuinely befuddled by young single women without kids who work part time and don't have any apparent time consuming hobbies/interests.

Edited

Why are you befuddled by this? There is a lot more to life than work. I find attitudes like yours so depressing. If someone doesn’t need to work full time then why should they!

EC22 · 10/01/2024 20:22

I work 30 hrs.
i moved up a grade so i get paid same as full time in old job.
i still have time to myself and enough money.
my youngest is 9.
i don’t intend on increasing my hours.

Corknut · 10/01/2024 20:23

I have 2 part time jobs but together they still wouldn’t be considered full time. I’m also a part time student.

TheMotherSide · 10/01/2024 20:23

My part-time week (4 days) is still a 50h week as a primary school teacher. I've dropped down to 4 days in order to be able to do my preparation from home during the 5th day and have one day off with the DC at the weekend instead. Usually have to work past midnight most nights. This is what part time looks like for so many teachers.
