Till receipts aren't recyclable - am i the only one who didn't know?!

Sorry for being boring but I'm annoyed I've only just found this out!

It's to do with the type of paper they're printed on.
Did anyone else know this?! I feel like it should be communicated better. Would definitely encourage me to say no to them more than I do at present!

I did not know that. I shred all mine and they go in the recycling.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 09/01/2024 12:05

Also some areas won't take shredded paper

TheJanuaryPinks · 09/01/2024 12:07

I didn’t, but it doesn’t matter.

BasiliskStare · 09/01/2024 12:15

@ButWhatAboutTheBees Our council specifically say they won't take shredded paper - I didn't know but DS read the small print and apparently it clogs up the washing machines.

Why doesn't it matter out of interest?

I'd love all councils to be consistent in their recycling and also to collect lightweight plastic like supermarkets do. It's so daft that council A will recycle (for example) pizza boxes but council B just down the road will scrap the whole load/bag if there's a pizza box included.

I don't drive and there's nowhere within walking distance that takes lightweight plastic. If the supermarkets can recycle it then the councils should too.

madeinmanc · 09/01/2024 11:43

It's about time there was a single app, independent of retailers so not tied to data scraping and users having a million different apps, for receipts so we can do away with them for ever.

Edited

Great idea, stuff anyone who isn't online. Why do the elderly need to buy stuff anyway they have everything they need.

kitsuneghost · 09/01/2024 12:20

I had no idea either
People in the UK generally have no idea of what can be recycled and what can't (not helped by different councils all being different). We need more education.

PS don't say local gov.uk website as that is notoriously vague

HellsToilet · 09/01/2024 12:22

Only the thermal ones and most councils will accept them with the paper recycling, no idea what they do with them then.

lumpfy · 09/01/2024 12:24

This isn't true for every area.

My area takes till receipts. It recommends you shred anything that contains personal information and then put the shredded paper in a large paper envelope or bag to go into your recyclable bin. As someone else said, shreds of paper can block the machine, but if they're in a large envelope/bag the machine can cope with them.

Obviously they could keep paper receipts 🙄

I've contaminated a LOT of bags of recycling over the years then 😅

Yep me too.

Worriedandnotsure · 09/01/2024 12:25

My area doesn't take shredded paper which I have always thought to be silly

But pretty much every modern till receipt is thermal paper

My area has a "Waste Wizard" on the council website. You type in what you need to dispose of and it tells you what to do with it.

I wonder what actually happens at the recycling centres, as obviously a lot of people will do things wrong. For example putting till receipts through the shredder and pizza boxes in the cardboard waste, not to mention the various types of plastic that can't be recycled. I guess larger items like pizza boxes, they could hook out, but nobody is going to spot that till receipts have been shredded with other paper. If someone puts greasy pizza boxes in the recycling, does this mean that the whole batch (lorryload?) of cardboard is contaminated?

Our council doesn't take shredded paper with the recycling. It could contain anything.

GimmeSleep · 09/01/2024 12:30

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 09/01/2024 10:54

I knew that. I found it surprising that pizza boxes aren’t recyclable. I think due to grease contamination. Also take away coffee cups can’t be recycled. I felt bad as aid been tossing them in recycling for years.

You can take coffee cups to Costa to be recycled 🍃Cup recycling

Anjea · 09/01/2024 12:31

What's wrong with recycling pizza boxes? I sling mine in with the cardboard.

Its not the box. It is whether the box has grease on it AFAIK

Depends on area, mine specifically states it takes pizza boxes and shredded paper but doesn't state which bin we can put takeaway coffee cups in so we are obviously not expected to have any

Boringthreadalert · 09/01/2024 12:15

Why doesn't it matter out of interest?

I think the question is why would it?

Branster · 09/01/2024 12:40

I never wondered that so it's useful to know.
Saying that, I've always thrown my receipts in the normal bin, unless I need to keep them.
Also, if it was recyclable paper (like the receipts you get from some old small independent shops), the piece of paper is so small that I can't imagine it would survive the chemical wash and tumbling required to turn it into pulp. So I never bothered recycling shop receipts.

Interesting about pizza boxes. We probably get takeaway pizza once or twice a year and the boxed go straight in the recycling bin. I wonder if the boxes from the fish &chip shop are also not suitable for recycling.

I think people get over zealous sometimes. A friend of mine puts used paper kitchen towel pieces in her recycling bin. Pointless.

HighlyConfusedIndividual · 09/01/2024 12:47

Recycling! The bane of my life. In our area we can't put glass bottles in the recycling, it has to go into landfill. I initially thought this was some h&s measure as we don't have bins, only bags. But that doesn't make sense either - the refuse collectors are in just as much " danger " picking up the black bags as they are the green , so why no glass in the recycling?! Can anyone enlighten me ?

PeppermintParty · 09/01/2024 12:49

Would love to hear from someone that actually works in a recycling centre. What happens with plastic if someone puts say a margarine tub or a ketchup bottle or milk bottle in the recycling without washing it our first? Is the whole batch rejected?

Sparklyhat · 09/01/2024 12:49

I have a colleague who boasts that they "literally never recycle anything"

I was shocked at this , they said the council get paid to do this so why should they do their job for them Hmm

Everything goes in whatever bin they fancy. Household waste will be chucked in the garden waste bin if no space in the normal bin etc

All plastic bottles, cans all straight in the bin 😠

They also said their elderly relative is blind and has stickers for his bins that's says so and he has special permission to put rubbish in any bin. They said if their relative can do it then surely it doesn't matter if anyone else does it as it must get sorted at the centre.

I'm still Shock at this
