Please help, trapped wind

hi

bit of a desperate plea here

Does anyone have any advice with trapped wind?

im in agony here. I came home from work tonight, had dinner as usual, fell asleep on the couch and had a nap for 2 hours and woke up at 9. I had some crisps and an apple and was about to go and get ready for bed but I was suddenly hit with the most excruciating tummy pain. I’ve had trapped wind before and this feels similar although a very very extreme version. It’s like waves of the most extreme cramping pain and occasional lower tummy grumbling noises. But I can’t seem to pass the wind and nothing else is helping at all. It’s been going on for over an hour now and I’ve never felt so horrible with it in all my life. It’s coming on/off in waves but when it’s happening I was just about screaming in pain

does anyone know of anything that would help? I saw a thing online about lying in a position and putting your leg upright etc but it didn’t help.

thanks so much in advance

I get trapped wind on occasion but it feels more like I’m having a heart attack at the time - very painful and I just feel waves of weirdness, can’t really describe it.

I have learnt not to have fizzy drinks with my dinner.

For me it lasted about 20 mins, I am crouched over on the floor and don’t really know what to do with myself, it just takes some time. I did get DH to rub and pat my back for 10 mins though which did ease it and it did subside on it’s own eventually.

Try drinking a litre of water in the space of half an hour. A doctor advised this once and it really did help.

Also laying on your left in recovery position and relax as much as possible.

Doingmybest12 · 08/01/2024 23:57

All 4s , head down near the floor, bottom up in the air. Plus anything with peppermint if no mint tea. Hope its gone, I have felt your pain!

Bringonchristmas36 · 09/01/2024 00:06

Ahhh I get this, I was getting trapped wind but was indigestion. Do you have gaviston? It was an absolute game changer for me when I worked this out

Mariposistaa · 09/01/2024 01:09

Oh blimey i remember having this when I ate apricots. It will probably be the apple so close to bed OP - too much fiber!
I second lying on your back, knees to chest and rocking from side to side, gentle squats too. When it does get shifted it will be spectacular 💨💨

😂😂 yeah, how satisfying is the release?!

Drink a glass of fizzy coke or other fizzy pop. The bubbles help break up the trapped wind.

I was doubled over in pain for a couple of hours and someone suggested it to me. Relief within minutes.

coxesorangepippin · 09/01/2024 01:25

Are you sure its trapped wind?

MrsHughesPinny · 09/01/2024 03:25

I’ve no suggestions beyond what others have said (peppermint tea, stretching, rolling your hips one side to another) but sending huge sympathy. I have IBS and get this, it’s so uncomfortable.

I hope it resolves and you’re feeling much better in the morning!

Ofcourseshecan · 09/01/2024 03:38

OP, please dial 111. It may not be trapped wind but something more serious. Don’t take the risk.

StoppitRightNow · 09/01/2024 05:11

If it isn’t gone by morning it’s possibly appendicitis. I spent every second of my appendicitis thinking I had trapped wind, even up to when I was in hospital I was convinced I just needed to fart.

Doctor said wind never lasts more than 8-10 hours and if it’s not appendix it might be gall stones.

Mammma91 · 09/01/2024 05:20

Oh op it’s horrible. I hope you got some relief? I get indigestion now I’m pregnant and it’s awful. I always find peppermint (mints, chewing gum, Gaviscon, even peppermint tea) gives me some relief. If it continues I would phone 111 for some advice.

JubileeJumps · 09/01/2024 05:21

Chew some fennel seeds
or a fizzy drink.

LuciaPillson · 09/01/2024 05:30

Are you feeling better?

If it is trapped wind then another vote for simethicone (it's an anti-surfactant that breaks down gas bubbles).

Also, fennel tea.

However, if the abdominal pain persists (pay attention too to whether you continue to be unable to pass gas at all and whether you can go to loo) seek medical advice. I tried to be tough and endure abdo pain for two days. Finally rang the GP and nurse said to go to A&E to rule out appendicitis. It turned out to be advanced cancer. A tumour was blocking my colon and I needed surgery. And as others have said there are different conditions it could potentially be. I very much hope in your case it's just wind, but don't go too long without seeking help.

Scarbsbeach · 09/01/2024 05:48

I had what I thought was bad indigestion following a big Sunday roast lunch meal. It lasted overnight, and continued through the next day. It finally dawned on me that I wasn’t able to do my normal daily activities as I was so uncomfortable and in so much pain. I did an online 111 symptom check which culminated with “Phone for an ambulance”!
I realised then it probably was something a bit worse and went to A&E with what turned out to be an infected gallbladder which was removed surgically.

The extreme end of what early on I’d thought was trapped wind!

Shoppingfiend · 09/01/2024 06:07

Pain upper right of abdomen could be gallbladder/. Gallstones , lower right could be appendix, it would also probably be tender if pressed if appendix.
You could try a warm bath.

quisensoucie · 09/01/2024 06:08

You have my complete sympathy, @lifeisaboxofcereal ! It's soooo painful.
Anything minty helps me. For no logical reason at all, a few drops of Oilbas oil in hot water inhaled (likecwhen you have a cold) helps, as does a hot water bottle (orxequivalent)

Backinthedress · 09/01/2024 06:16

How are you doing this morning? Did you get some relief and some sleep?

Tarquina · 09/01/2024 06:32

OP if you are still here .... Please do not self-diagnose. You don't know what this is. It could be a LOT of other things which you will "miss" if you decide it's wind and treat for that.

Mairzydotes · 09/01/2024 07:13

For trapped wind , get up and try to walk it out . Pace around the house or climb the stairs. Sip warm water rather than cold .

Itssnotunusual · 09/01/2024 07:42

As someone that occasionally has cripplingly painful episodes of trapped wind- the most efficient thing for me to have in is Rennie's deflatine. It goes from agonising to a dull ache/ nothing in less than half an hour. It's very much worth keeping on hand just incase (as I do).

Ourshoddyhouse · 09/01/2024 07:44

Downward dog position and kind of rock back & forth (hope that makes sense)

winniebeen · 09/01/2024 10:02

Go for a walk.

Make a cat position (yoga) and then drop your head/shoulders/arms so your bottom half is higher up than your top: let gravity help.

KimberleyClark · 09/01/2024 10:08

I have had lower back pain and cramps for the last couple of days. I think it’s IBS - bladder and bowel (they often go hand in hand). I made a chilli on Saturday night and was possibly a bit over generous with the bird’s eye chilli flakes although the chilli was not uncomfortably hot, just the way I like it. Buscopan and lots of water does help.
