Help - neighbour blinding me

Carsarelife · 07/01/2024 22:37

So I live in a bungalow with neighbours either side of me, we don't have any houses over looking us per se.
My house is 2 bed with a kitchen and bedroom right at front of the house.
Opposite me is the side of someone's house. All you can see is a brick wall with one teeny window which I'm guessing is a staircase window.
The small garden that is at the side of the house opposite has been turned into a driveway for 2/3 cars. They reverse in so the cars are facing outwards ready to drive off . One of the cars most nights either starts his car and leaves it running with the headlights literally beaming into my DD's bedroom and as they are led literally lights up the whole room. Or he comes home and reverses onto the drive but sits there a while with his lights beaming in the window.
It's so annoying as he probably doesn't even realise he's doing it.
Should I just suck it up and invest in a black out blind?
Would it be unreasonable to put a note in his door?

@Muchof for you it's a non issue maybe. Most people have come on just to have a go at me. Glad to see @soupandcrackers making me laugh

Carsarelife · 08/01/2024 14:58

@Pumpkinpie1 no my drive doesn't affect him. Opposite my drive is just some bushes and street lights that turn off at midnight but not directly outside my house so never been an issue.
They don't actually have a drive but have all started parking on their side garden and most drive on but one reverses on.
His house looks out elsewhere I can see side of his house with a very very small stair window

Ahhh another OP claiming people just want to be mean because they aren't falling over themselves to show sympathy with an easily fixed issue

Carsarelife · 08/01/2024 17:28

@ButWhatAboutTheBees I didn't ask for sympathy.
If you read the post properly it just said should I suck it up and buy a blackout blind. And as it was on a AiBU I said would it be unreasonable to put a note in his door?

Never asked for sympathy or arsey comments. The questions were very simple really

Notes through doors are passive aggressive and come across a little cowardly. A bit like knocking on the door and running away. Either have the courage to speak to them in person or get a properly fitted blackout curtain but please please, don't go sticking notes through doors. It's the best way to start ill feelings in a community and makes you look incredibly petty. Why does nobody have the balls to actually speak to a person's face anymore??

Carsarelife · 08/01/2024 17:38

@MaryDroppings never said I don't have the balls. Why are you assuming? I work, they work, I come home they are out. They come home im in bed etc
It's not hard to work out

OP posts:
MaryDroppings · 08/01/2024 17:41

Yeah ok, stick a note through the door and end up being thought of as the local whiner everyone takes the piss out of. Good luck 😊

Carsarelife · 08/01/2024 17:42

@MaryDroppings god you must be bored

The weekend has just gone. If you don’t work then, could you not have had a word?

Do they even have a dropped kerb to access the garden

Sounds like they shouldn't really be parking there

Yanbu

Carsarelife · 08/01/2024 17:47

@greengreengrass25 no dropped kerb. I get things change and nothing stays the same. It's a 3 bed house with around 8 people there. Their choice obviously. As no drive they took side fence down and started parking, I guess as their property they most probably planning a drive eventually but I'm only guessing

OP posts:
greengreengrass25 · 08/01/2024 17:49

They are not allowed to drive over the pavement so you would be in your rights to speak to the council who take a very dim view of this

Do they own the house?

Carsarelife · 08/01/2024 18:00

@greengreengrass25 yes the house is owned. It's a corner house. None of the houses on that side of the road have a driveway.

greengreengrass25 · 08/01/2024 18:01

They need a dropped kerb to drive onto their property

Not fun for you having neighbours with a MO property

Muchof · 08/01/2024 09:06

Nobody sits in their car at 11:30pm at night for the hell of it. They are obviously coming or going as they are entitled to do. Just put the blinds up, this is a non issue.

Precisely.

stichguru · 08/01/2024 18:46

How long are they actually leaving the lights on for? I mean my husband's car is an electric hybrid and if he turns it on in the dark the lights come on. I mean it sounds like they might be reversing the car safely onto their drive like they should. Then come time for work, turning it on, defrosting it and programing the sat nav before heading off. If so, they are doing everything right, so you can't complain because there in NOTHING to complain about. If they are leaving on for more than say 15 mins, then maybe ask them if they need to have it on so long.

Carsarelife · 08/01/2024 19:00

@stichguru no. They don't have a drive firstly. Secondly we don't live on a main road/busy road so no need to reverse it on. Coming home at 11.30pm and sitting there with engine running and lights beaming in window. Not warming car up or setting sat nav etc. If I thought they were just living their lives it wouldn't get to me. I'm not a busy body or a person that wants everything my way or the highway. It's a large car with super powerful lights like new led style and it's literally blinding. I have a kitchen window and a bedroom window at front of my house. The lights are beaming across the whole house for 10-20 mins.

Mirrors. Get a couple of mirrors and shine that light right back (light-hearted obvs!). Then put in black out curtains😁. I may have done this with a neighbours light in our rear bedroom...... It worked.

Carsarelife · 08/01/2024 19:14

@functionoverform ahhhh speaking from experience. I like it 😀

OP posts:
greengreengrass25 · 08/01/2024 19:16

Also for environmental reasons they shouldn't have their engines running for 15 mins

SomethingSpangly · 08/01/2024 19:21

Geez, if I was your neighbour OP, I'd be mortified not to have realised the lights were now illuminating your dd's room. YANBU. Hope you get it resolved.

SomethingSpangly · 08/01/2024 19:23

....should say YANBU to see if they can be a bit more considerate, but I'd put up blackout blinds first and then speak to them. Loving the mirror idea though!

@Carsarelife

Say what?

Most people have come on just to have a go at me

Don't be ridiculous, no one came on MN to 'have a go at you'

you asked a question, people answered.

if you only want answers that blow smoke, ask your Mum.
