Is this chicken pox?

Was bathing DD tonight and noticed these spots on her back. She’s due to start back school tomorrow after the Xmas break but obviously don’t want to be sending her in if it is chicken pox.

Have attached a photo.

Is this chicken pox?

I'd say definitely.

shoesday · 07/01/2024 21:20

The big one one on the left looks sus yes sorry.

NewYearNewMeMamma · 07/01/2024 21:24

That's how all my children's ones started so yes would say chicken pox

Sunflwer · 07/01/2024 21:36

Do they have little blisters on top? That's what made me sure. It's the right part of the body for it to start. Going on experience, you'll be sure by morning.

RockAndRollerskate · 07/01/2024 21:37

You’ll know by morning if they’ve spread

Benibidibici · 07/01/2024 21:38

Yeah it does kinda look like it.check neck & behind ears.they'll go like water blisters

elaeocarpus · 07/01/2024 21:44

Another vote for yes; you will know for sure by the morning

Remember, do not give ibuprofen

MumPod · 07/01/2024 21:49

It does look like the start of it.

Ilovepugs2017 · 07/01/2024 21:52

Thank you all, I’ll check her when I go up to bed shortly & again in the morning. She did mention earlier they were a bit itchy. Will see if I can get DH to pick up some camomile lotion or cream on his way home from work tomorrow. Any other suggestions of things that might help? How long does she roughly have to be off school for? Will message the teacher in the morning

Rather than calamine we used a mousse called poxclin which is meant to help with the itching and minimise risk of scarring. As other have said, they'll spread/increase in number and some will start to get water blisters on top within about 12 hours if chicken pox

Daniki · 07/01/2024 21:57

Looks like it OP! Could blister before the morning, that's how my sons looked! Calamine lotion, oat baths, virasoothe gel was great as it was cool. I also gave phenergen liquid at night to help sleep and calm the itch

shoesday · 07/01/2024 21:57

There's gel stuff at the pharmacy

shoesday · 07/01/2024 21:58

And aveeno oat bath sachets

hannahbanana2007 · 07/01/2024 21:59

And they are contagious till all dried up and fully scabbed over - be aware the spots can come in waves so just as you think it's finished you might get more that have the water blister. Roughly a week though usually

Scrapthatstartagain · 07/01/2024 21:59

@elaeocarpus Why no Ibuprofen?

hannahbanana2007 · 07/01/2024 22:01

Scrapthatstartagain · 07/01/2024 21:59

@elaeocarpus Why no Ibuprofen?

I can't remember why it can, but it increases risk of serious infections so it's always advised to avoid giving with chickenpox, use paracetamol based drugs instead

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/01/2024 22:03

This is much much better than calamine. Cannot emphasise strongly enough how much better it is!

Also, put oats in a bath. When I had shingles I used a pop sock, filled with oats and tied off, put boiling water over it in a big bowl to stew for 5 mins or so. Then poured the whole lot in a cool bath and used the oat filled sock like a sponge to rub over me. Amazing relief.

How old is she?

icanlovemebetter · 07/01/2024 22:03

My son has just gotten better with chicken pox. So I can confirm yes this does look like it, OP. Plenty of fluids and rest. It took him a week to get better. But of temperature in the middle. Nothing concerning.

icanlovemebetter · 07/01/2024 22:04

In my culture we don't give bath until all the spots are scabbed and start falling off. We just sponge bath with neem water.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/01/2024 22:06

@Scrapthatstartagain ibuprofen with chicken pox can cause necrotising fasciitis

I came across this the last day or 2 when my son had it, was raging I hadn't came across it sooner! I bought 2 bottles of that poxclin shite and it didn't work 🙈😂

Ilovepugs2017 · 10/01/2024 19:13

Sorry me again, DD is now absolutely covered in spots. Has a cough and a fever and is quite lethargic. Is this normal with chicken pox?

My daughter recently had chicken pox over Christmas, we used the piriton syrup, oats in the bath, and also the original head & shoulders classic clean shampoo quite liberally as a bubble bath and body wash as I'd heard lots of people say that it works, I think it helped to dry them out quicker and helped prevent itching. I'd say in our case days 3 & 4 were the worst when she felt the most unwell and miserable, tired, run down, sniffly, loss of appetite etc. she had them in her mouth so we had lots of icepoles for hydration. We tried poxclin mousse but I don't think it helped at all
