Newborn sleep

Sorry for posting here. Only got a couple of replies on my other thread. And want some more opinions/advice. Just wanting to know if this is okay. My daughter slept for 6 hours last night. She feeds constantly during the day. She's 2 weeks old.
My son at this stage only ever slept 3 hours. Which was still good.

I know they say never waks a sleeping baby and they'll tell you when hungry. She did lose weight in the beginning. Was 8lb 5oz born and went down to 7lb 6oz. At her last weight check which was Wednesday she was 7lb 14oz

So I imagine she's probably back to her birth weight. She's a gannet. Loves her boob. Boobie monster like her brother.

Tia 😊

I’m a neonatal nurse and we say no longer than 5 hours.

Even if she's back to her birth weight?

Thank you for all the comments. Wasn't too worried but definitely eased my mind :) x

DS was like this. Ebf Fed constantly during daylight hours then would zonk out for a stretch from about 7/8pm.

I didn't wake him. He gained a massive amount of weight in those first few weeks and rocketed up the centiles, and at about 15 weeks old slept 7.30 pm til about 5am and continued to do this most nights thereafter.

It was just him. His younger sibling was more typical and needed a feed at night til about 9 months i think

Benibidibici · 07/01/2024 17:54

Only thing i would say is it was bad for my milk supply. He didn't wake much for night feeds after about 5 months and it killed my milk supply, as a result he went to town on solid food & it reduced further and by 10 months my period returned and breast feeding ended not long after.

He's always been a brilliant sleeper

Good to hear 😊 thank you for your comment. That still doesn't sound too bad with your second.

Thats good on been a good sleeper. Don't want to jynx it with my daughter. My son is a good sleeper has been since about 3 months. Didn't affect milk supply so hopefully wont this time either.

Interested to know why you never wake a sleeping baby ? Never heard this before.

Why would you especially when they're at the birth weight. Let them sleep. Sleep is just as important

I don't know, could be many reasons I guess. I wake mine up before bed to change her, feed and to do a bit of awake time so she's not wanting to be awake for hours in the middle of the night.

That's fair enough.

Some babies are just good sleepers. My youngest DD is like that (now 5 months) and has been a good sleeper pretty much since birth. My older two... not so much. So long as your DD is back at birth weight and is feeding a lot during the day, I'd honestly just enjoy the bliss of a baby who sleeps well! Congratulations on your new arrival!

“I know they say never wake a sleeping baby” - both times I’ve been in hospital after giving birth the midwives have said to wake the baby up if they sleep for longer than 4 hours but I see people are saying it’s not important once they’re back at their birth weight. It sounds like you’re lucky to have a baby that sleeps well. I’ve been lucky with my second who sleeps much better than my first although not for as long as yours.

Just to update. she's been weighed. 8lb 2oz nearly 3oz. Not far off her birth weight. Going to keep doing what I'm doing :)

I woke mine in the day from naps to make sure they got plenty of feeds in and were tired for night. So I fed every 3 hours in the day, and then did a dream feed at 11pm after which they went through until 4 or 5am.

I make sure she feeds plenty during the day. Sometimes every 2 hours. Can be less than that. Going to add a dream feed in.

Fantastic. You are doing a great job. Establishing breastfeeding in the first few weeks can be tough.
Enjoy your baby, these early days go by so quickly. X
