Asking for the receipt

deste · 17/03/2008 20:50

Five sets of friends got together to buy my friends husband a digital camera for his 60th birthday. He has now asked me for the receipt so that he can send off the warranty. I dont want to give it to him as I think he is being rude. Am I being unreasonable. Also is there any benefit to sending off the warranty. I remember reading that it was better to just hold on to the receipt.

Perhaps you could get the friends to send off for the warranty. It will protect you if you need to get a repair done.

Good idea, I never thought of that.

I've never had to send off a receipt to get a warranty- usually all you have to do is state when and where it was purchased.

ib · 17/03/2008 21:10

You don't have to send off for the warranty to apply but if you do you get notified of service notices, product recalls and so on which is good. I don't see why it's rude to ask for it tbh.

No-one I've spoken to sends off the warranty, they just keep the receipt or as in our case confirmation of purchase on the Internet. He might as well have asked how much we paid for it thats all.

See what you mean, but the warrenty is beneficial especially if the receipt gets lost as you are on the computer system already. Speaking as someone who didnt bother and now cant find proof of purchase for dishwasher that is playing up.

SugaryBits · 17/03/2008 21:38

Surely if he was that interested in how much it cost he could look up prices for that make/model on the Internet?

I have sent off warranties that required all the details from the receipt before.

I think YAB a little bit U

deste · 17/03/2008 22:29

That is why I am asking, I dont mean to be unreasonable but I would never dream of asking for a receipt unless there was a problem. He doesn't have the computer skills to look up the prices by the way.

if you'd all bought him a jumper or something I could see why it would be rude to ask for the receipt but as it's an electrical purchase I don't think it's rude. My Dad always sends off his receipts for the warranty whether you need to or not, perhaps that's a generational thing! If you don't want him to see the amount you could send it off for him or give it to him in a sealed envelope.

why dont you send off the warranty with the receipt to activate the warranty. but if the man wants the receipt give it to him, it is no big deal.nor is it rude to ask for it. don't read too much into this. it is kind that you all chipped in

maybe he just likes to be organised keep receipts/warranties together (i do this)and always send off warranties and some do ask for receipt proof of purchase. As initially with any problems you are supposed to contact the retailer
