Mirena, bleeding and possible menopause

I’m sorry I’m posting for traffic and looking for advice from others.

mirena coil fitted 20 years ago, no problem it stopped all bleeding
3 weeks ago out of the blue started bleeding- nothing heavy, like a light period but on and off for now 3 weeks
I’m 50, no other symptoms- obviously my age is a factor.

don’t want to bother GP unnecessarily as thinking this is part of menopause?

Any unusual/new bleeding needs a trip to the GP.
How old is your coil?

I've been bleeding with the mirena too, after 10 years of not. Had a gynae review which gave the all clear. (Then i started estrogen for hrt and have now been bleeding very heavily for 8 weeks so gp is sending me back to the gynae for her opinion, probably adding more progesterone to counter the estrogen!) That's a long way of saying go to your gp, unexplained or unexpected bleeding should be checked.

When I started bleeding with my coil I was sent for a scan which showed that it had dropped down, so wasn’t working properly. I was then sent for a hysteroscopy, but it had moved back up by then. No problems since.

I just checked the NHS website and it is apparently normal for meno / peri women, but there again as others have said, unusual/ irregular bleeding should be checked by a GP. I don’t like going to the doctors, not sure what to do now 🙈

You should see the GP.

You should see the GP. It might be related to menopause but unusual bleeding can also be a red flag for malignancy. Get it checked out.
