Woman’s shoes are too narrow?

ThanksAntsThants23 · 06/01/2024 13:21

I am a woman with quite wide feet and high arches. I have never been able to buy shoes that really fit properly. I run a lot and buying running shoes has away a been difficult, I also work outdoors and have never been able to find a pair of boots that fit so I spend my entire life flaunting risk assessments and having very wet feet by wearing my running shoes to work as they are generally the only thing that I can walk in relatively comfortably.

This year I have developed a bunion and Even the widest trainers I can feasibly buy are now too narrow for one of my feet. I’m seriously beginning to consider just walking everywhere in socks.

The thing is that I know I’m not the only woman who finds woman’s shoes too narrow, I hear it from a lot of woman, especially other runners. Lost of people say they just buy men’s shoes but thats not an option if, like me you have feet smaller than a uk 6. I’m starting to get quite enraged by the lack of shoes available for wider feet.

Are standard woman’s shoes too narrow for the average woman’s foot.

YANBU -standard woman’s shoes are too narrow for the average foot

YABU - standard woman’s shoe width is fine for the average woman and you have no business expecting your weird troll feet and bunion to fit in shoes made for delicate ladies.

I have wide feet and most of my shoes are hotter. One think that helped me a lot is when I saw a podiatrist and he told me I was buying my shoes too short. The widest bit of your toes should not be after the shoe starts to narrow. I have short toes and in order to get my large toe joint in the correct place I have to take the heel to tie joint measurements rather than just the length of the foot.https://brannock.com/pages/instructions-fitting-tips

I hear you! No mass produced cheap shoes for me these days. I have to buy from Cosyfeet or Wide Fit Shoes. New Balance 6E - that's EEEEEE - are my buy.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 06/01/2024 14:49

I have wide feet, I wear mens sometimes just a size down. Some brands are wider. Fly London boots fit me

I agree. People’s feet have got wider, almost every shop does wide fit shoes now so you shouldn’t have a problem? Narrow shoes are like hens teeth.

Ha ha
Womens shoes come in B or C fitting as standard extra wide tends to on be a D.
I'm an F fitting which means that I live in men's boots usually a size or to bigger than my size.
@ThanksAntsThants23 if your a size 4 or lower Clarks kids range have all widths I know it's embarrassing but comfy nice shoes for a special occasion are a must. I do laugh at the staff who always insist on measurements my feet because I can't have 3 F feet but I do

nowtygaffer · 06/01/2024 14:55

I have wide feet too! I find German brands fit the best. I usually get them in independent shoe shops.

Gettingbysomehow · 06/01/2024 14:55

I've never been able to wear standard width. I wear E or EE width. They don't have to be expensive. Most clothing catalogues sell extra wide shoes. Evans sell extra wide shoes. They are everywhere. Clarke sell extra wide.
If you have high arched feet you need a heel. Flat shoes will kill them.
If you have narrow feet that would be a problem.

PermanentTemporary · 06/01/2024 14:57

Sorry I haven't read all the thread. I have size 42 hobbit feet with arrestingly dramatic bunions making a huge ball of foot area , long toes one of which is now clawed, and high arches. So I can relate.

Essentially I would say you need a physical shop. I've given up ordering online.

For running shoes I tried mens trainers a few years ago and failed, but having had a proper session in a running shop, I discovered Saucony Triumph men's trainers. I just assumed that trainers had to be uncomfortable but they were perfect from the start.

Otherwise I wear Hotter. Plus by spending a LOT of money in a shop I can find good walking boots - Alt-Berg worked for me.

It does feel like shoe sizes have gone a bit bonkers. It's like buying clothes at different sizes, depending on the shop, but shoe sizes you'd think would be more universal.
I appear to have gone up a size (my toes are now squashed and curled up in a 7) yet all my old shoes still fit (even the ones hardly worn and not broken in)
I've got standard feet, but a wide ankle. Wide fits are too wide, but standard boots don't always zip up.
Us awkward people obviously just need to be rich so we can get all our footwear tailor made.

Width size I'm usually okay - but length should be 7.5 so go with a 8 but recently found some shops 8 way too big and 7 better.

It makes shoe shopping on -line or quick pop into shops and picking off shelf much harder.

"Are standard woman’s shoes too narrow for the average woman’s foot."
A lot of shoes are made in China, and yes, they are often very narrow for British feet.
I always buy wider fitting shoes, usually from specialist shops.

ElBandito · 06/01/2024 14:58

I have one beautiful narrow foot and one wide foot. Shoe buying is a nightmare 😢

RidingMyBike · 06/01/2024 14:58

Opposite! What width are your feet?

It's almost impossible to find narrow women's shoes. All the shoes in high street shops are really wide - E and F widths at least. My feet just fall straight out of shoes like that. I can't buy shoes in shops.

I'm a AA width. You need to find a specialist supplier. I found this one online? www.wideshoes.co.uk

Petrine · 06/01/2024 15:02

I have size 3 narrow feet. I find shoes fit me if I buy from brands such as... R&B, LK Bennett, etc. I don't even try buying from M&S, Next, etc as they're usually far too wide. I do have several pairs of boots which I have to pad out with thick socks.

Slippers are really difficult to find. I usually schlep around the house because I can't keep them on, even children's ones.

SpaceJar · 06/01/2024 15:04

I have wide feet and can't wear most regular width shoes. I wear Sketchers trainers, Hotter or Clark's wide fit boots and smart work shoes, Birkenstock sandals and clogs, and wellies from Jileon. Fit Flop also have some wide fitting shoes. I find it much easier to shop for wide fitting shoes nowadays than I did 20 years ago.

greengreengrass25 · 06/01/2024 15:04

USA was much better for width fittings but haven't been for a while

At one point Amazon had Trotter sandals that were in narrow widths and I sometimes used to go to Medissa shoe fairs to buy narrow shoes but unfortunately they have gone now

Towelrail · 06/01/2024 15:05

I have very narrow feet but think my toe to foot ratio is odd because I find most shoes don't have wide enough toe area in the right place. If I go up a size then I have 10cm of empty shoe in front of my toes.

I also find most shoes come over the big toe too flatly.

Petrine · 06/01/2024 15:07

@milveycrohn

Shoes might be made in China but they are to British design, they're not 'Chinese fit' shoes.

RidingMyBike · 06/01/2024 15:07

For anyone struggling to find narrow shoes, boots and trainers in shops. These two companies stock AAA, AA and B widths although the prices have gone sky high recently as they mostly have to be imported.

Same here, OP. I can't buy men's, even though width wise they are much better, as I'm a 5/38. Kids' shoes are no good as they are often narrower than adults'.

Standard width at Clarke's is a D, wide fit is E. Narrow fit appears to be completely non existent.

Must have changed in the adult section I only buy from the kids section due to being a size 3 with an F fitting so even the extra wide adults are to narrow but they rarely have size 3 in the adult area by me

greengreengrass25 · 06/01/2024 15:25

Maybe 40 years ago but definitely not now in Clarkes

I think in the 90s C widths could be found occasionally

If you get unisex rather than girls, you might find them wider. I wear junior Timberland's and they are much much wider than women's Timberland's.

There are 50 different styles of "workboots" in a UK size 5 on the Screwfix website right now.
