Birmingham Tomorrow - Ideas Please!

Teen DD is meeting up with a new friend in Birmingham tomorrow daytime. The plan had been to meet up at the museum and art gallery, then some food. I've been fairly hands off with the arrangement so far as letting DD sort things out independently, but just clocked tonight that the museum is in fact closed until Feb.

I haven't been to Birmingham for about 25 years. We're getting the train to New Street - any ideas for a brilliant place for them to meet? They're not interested in shopping or clothes shops. They want to chat and walk and hang out a bit I think. My DD would prefer something like a gallery, to give them something mutual to focus on.

We have about 3.5 hours and we need to fit in a bite to eat and picking something up from the jewellery quarter, where we'd rather be, too be honest, if you think that might work.

Thanks!

At 14 they are miles too old for think tank, and the sealife centre is very expensive just to look at some dull fish. Can they ice skate, the ice rink is OK.

Also what am I missing in the library that would be of interest to look at?.

Library - often has exhibitions in. Plus the Shakespeare rooms when open. And the balcony.

I wonder if the museums closing for January is due to the council being bankrupt.
It's not just January! BMAG has been closed or partially-closed for nearly 4 years. It's a disgrace.

Lapworth museum of geology at university of birmingham is a quirky place to go, if teens are after a different experience. The cross city train is only couple stops to university station.

I can see someone has seconded Chance & Counters. I know a board game cafe might sound dull but shake off any thoughts about dully pushing a boot around a musty smelling monopoly board. It’s the opposite. Loads of new and inventive games to suit everyone. My DC and my nieces and nephews love it (early 20s). The food is perfect for teens. Real crowd pleasers. The staff help you to pick a game and tell you how to play it and they are always cool and fun young people. You don’t have to play a game, you can just have lunch. It’s a small charge to play. The customers range from families with primary age kids to middle aged but by far the most common are cool twenty somethings - but not in a ‘too cool for school’ way - just nice.

Red Brick Market is just up the road - I can see the same poster had the same day out as me and my DC and nieces and recommended it too.

I feel really invested in you having a lovely day out now! Especially as I had a lovely day out there recently meeting up with my nieces. Do let us know how it goes. 😊

I was going to say that if they are headed out to the University then they could also do the Barber Institute of Fine Art. But you'll never guess what ...

The Lapworth doesn't open until midday at the w/e.

I just wanted to update here, because you were all so brilliant at coming up with ideas!

We/they had a fab day. Our time was cut down by flood-related late trains, but they managed a lovely lunch at Brindley Place - the teens at Wagamama, me at the Cosy Club Grin They pottered around the library, the fair and the ice rink, before going to the Tree Top Golf in the Bullring, before home.

They've already started to plan a second meet up, and we're going to try more of your ideas.

Huge, huge thanks - you were all so much help!

Thank you op-I had never heard of red brick market but I shall be off to see it soon! Glad you had a good day. I did a canal kayak at night from the roundhouse and can heartily recommend it or a day one. Will find a link.
