To think teenagers are embarrassing?

I’m on the early train home and stuck in the carriage with teens. Speaking so loudly and shouting “apologies everyone for being so loud” in a very sarcastic way - despite no one paying them attention. Then they admitted to … trying a vape - the shock!

What’s funny is I was the same and I thought it was cool but now it’s just cringe to hear 😅

It's in the job description 😁 they'll cringe at their former selves soon enough!

HamBone · 04/01/2024 16:31

Yes! My DS (15) has admitted to
sometimes being embarrassed by me as I talk too loudly apparently (and I’m “forrin” so I think my accent/me being “different” embarrasses him as well).

What he doesn’t realize is that walking along with a teen with a truculent expression on their face embarrasses me as well. 🤣

14yr old DS currently sports a ridiculous haircut. All floppy/messy at the front and getting in his eyes, like he hasn't had it cuts in years. He actually went last week, and came back with it looking exactly the same, just a tiny bit shorter at the back and sides. It looks a right state, but obviously he won't listen.

I want to curl up behind the sofa when I think of some of the views I spouted and the clothes I wore as a teenager. I think it's mainly the inability to imagine older people as ever having been teenagers themselves, so thinking your conversation is shocking and something they won't have heard before 😂

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/01/2024 17:13

My teenager thinks that I am pretty embarrassing.

Join in, your kids love that.
Me to DS's friend: Bro, your trainers are peng.
DS: <dies of shame>

My dad said the best bit about parenting, is when you are an embarrassment to your children. Instead of the other way round.

I am embarrassed, not to say mortified when reflecting on my teenage self, yes.

WonderingWanda · 04/01/2024 17:30

I agree, they often try so hard to be cool and they often look a bit daft doing it. My ds keeps wearing his trousers down so low his bum is hanging out, it looks ridiculous but he thinks it's the coolest!

OldTinHat · 04/01/2024 17:31

I remember at the road at a pedestrian crossing, me and my friend Tina. We were 13 and thought we were goths. We'd slathered on a black lipstick tester in Boots and thought we were so edgy. The couple next to us also waiting to cross the road were trying not to laugh. I'm 52 now and I would also try hard not to smile!

35965a · 04/01/2024 17:32

I agree, all teenagers are embarrassing. Even generally lovely ones just say or do stupid and cringey things too often. I get embarrassed when I think back to my teenage self and I wasn’t a particularly bad one, quite boring actually. Just said and did some dumb things.

OldTinHat · 04/01/2024 17:32

Forgot the whole point! The couple were my age now.

Fitandfree · 04/01/2024 17:32

Mine won't look at or speak to people when we are out and about,so I can't imagine him acting like that on a train. He's mouth all mighty ar home of course. He finds everything about me mortifying - especially as I'll speak to anyone and strike up conversations.

Fitandfree · 04/01/2024 17:36

I used to preach that we should have no armed forces - we should model peace and harmony. We would save millions of pounds and other countries would follow our example.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 04/01/2024 18:01

Yes, I too knew everything at 15. These days, as a middle-aged adult it’s clear that I don’t have a clue what’s going on

wanttokickoffbutcant · 04/01/2024 20:52

I am constantly astounded by how much I have forgotten from 13 to 51..........my teen constantly reminds me though of how little I know so that's ok.
