To dress my toddlers in this for another child’s baptism

Hello

we are invited to a baptism next month and just wondering what is acceptable to put my toddler girls in?
we have a couple of hand me down dresses that wear each worn once to a wedding.
one is a sort of off white pale peach colour with a gold trim and gold polka dots and the other is a peachy gold sparkly dress from monsoon(with a bow at back - could probably pass as a bridesmaid dress) Are they too fancy to wear to another toddlers baptism or is that ok?
And AIBU to dress my toddler girls in those with a cardigan or denim jacket and a pair of nice clean white trainers that match the dresses?
we can’t afford to buy new clothes and shoes plus we have to travel for this and bring a gift.
thanks x

Put a photo up

RosieBurdock · 04/01/2024 13:43

That sounds lovely.

Isseywith3witchycats · 04/01/2024 13:43

Of course it fine a baptism is a good reason to dress up nice

dinglyping · 04/01/2024 13:44

I'm sure that would be lovely.

Whatever shoes they already own are always ok for littlies - no one would expect you to buy new shoes for this sort of thing.

edited for typo

Sounds a bit too dressy to me, but I don't go to a lot of baptisms so maybe it's fine.

Clarinet1 · 04/01/2024 13:45

Sounds fine to me! Christening robes are usually white so, if your two are in peach I don’t see a problem. Also, will there be other young guests there of a similar age to yours? If so you could maybe compare notes with their Mums.

ActDottie · 04/01/2024 13:52

To me sounds a bit too dressy but I actually have no idea what is acceptable to wear to a Baptism.

I’m imagining a nice dress but not dressy. If you’re struggling for money then Vinted has so so so many bargains for less than £5 that I’m sure would be ideal.

Singleandproud · 04/01/2024 13:56

You have nice dresses that they'll soon grow out of, just let them wear them a cardi and white trainers sounds perfect to dress them down. It's not a wedding where you are worried about up staging the bride

Notmetoo · 04/01/2024 13:59

Sounds perfectly ok to me. I don't think you should feel you have to buy them anything new. I'm sure whatever you put them in will be fine.

sprigatito · 04/01/2024 14:01

They sound totally appropriate, not too dressy with cardigans and trainers but you will look like you've made an effort. Perfect.

Spomsored · 04/01/2024 14:22

I think it's respectful to show that you have dressed up for someone else's celebration. Don't buy anything new. Be prepared for a crowd of children charging round together and make sure they are comfortable to do that (and you don't mind if the party dresses get grubby)

Would people really think that a young child is upstaging the bride?

Singleandproud · 04/01/2024 14:44

@catmothertes1 I didn't mean anyone would think a young child was ever upstaging a bride, just that that's the only time I think that you need to be worrying about being too 'fancy' which is what the OP seems concerned about. What OP has for a christening sounds lovely.

A baptism is a reason to get dressed up. Certainly in my church all would be dressed up, love a baptism

Maray1967 · 04/01/2024 15:18

I’m a church goer and have seen a lot of baptisms. At the last one, other children were dressed in party dresses - they were a mix of cousins and children of the parents’ friends. I’d go with cardigans rather than denim jackets.

kitsuneghost · 04/01/2024 15:29

Sounds fine especially with the denim jacket and some boots or trainers. That would look supercute

SparkyBlue · 04/01/2024 15:58

They sound like lovely party dresses and a baptism is a special occasion. I'm assuming there will be sort of lunch or party afterwards anyway

Girlmumx2 · 04/01/2024 16:01

Thank you everyone. I feel a bit less paranoid now! I am an over thinker!!!!
I’ll put them in the dresses and whichever accessories match best! Plus their trainers already match lol. They can be dressed up with comfy feet :)

Yes there will be a party afterwards

Sounds lovely especially if wearing with a cardigan or denim jacket and white trainers.

Painintheback · 04/01/2024 16:12

I've seen christenings where guests are dressed in anything from tutsi every day clothes( including the baby) to full on fancy wedding attire. Your virus dresses sound great. The very fact there is a party afterwards and your chosen are wearing part dresses makes perfect sense to me- that's the bit they will understand, the sitting in church is hard to comprehend for many little children unless they are used to it and doesn't have any significance.

Grammarnut · 04/01/2024 19:32

Those sound lovely. Totally suitable.

Pumpkinpie1 · 04/01/2024 19:36

Sounds lovely
