She can be a bit control freaky. If she picks up on an error she'll send me an email like

"You have sent a service request to x and not closed it! It has missed the SLA! Can you chase it up or close it!"

Well, besides the point that if I send a service request to someone I can't close it or they can't work on it the whole 'exclamation mark after every sentence' is getting on me nerves cos, to me, it's saying "god, you're stupid"

Am I being oversensitive? Mayhap I am. BUt it's bad grammar anyway so there!

MamaG · 17/03/2008 13:49

Yes! I get annoyed by this! I now have to hide this thread!

chickytwotimes · 17/03/2008 13:50

Excessive use of exclamation marks in professional context = stupid person.

boudoiricca · 17/03/2008 13:52

It drives me crazy too!

But not as much as idiots who use too many of them!!! All the time!!!!!!

Or people who leave spaces before punctuation !

I see it as a sign of low intelligence and suggest you start to view it in the same way

Kathyis6incheshigh · 17/03/2008 13:54

I think you should subtly mock her by replying to her using even more exclamation marks than she does.

SheikYerboutisEggHunt · 17/03/2008 13:57

It would annoy me too.

One of my clients (Simon) does this.

He also signs off e-mails with kisses, despite having never met me. Obv I sound like a fox on the phone.

MissusH · 17/03/2008 14:00

YANBU - badly written emails do my head in...

There is a Chief Operating Officer in my company who types his emails in text speak -he is obviously so busy that he saves time by cutting out any surplus letters

Twiglett · 17/03/2008 14:02

Overuse of exclamation marks is a well-known sign of stupidity!

Volkl · 17/03/2008 14:03

i work with someone that feels the need to finish every sentence off with many exclamation marks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always think she's being highly rude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or she'll ask a question for example:

When are we going to receive these???????????????????????????

It drives me insane and winds me up instantly.

castille · 17/03/2008 14:06

My DD's teacher did this, all over her school report

Very unprofessional, IMO

edam · 17/03/2008 14:08

I think you are showing great self-restraint in not punching her on the nose.

DrNortherner · 17/03/2008 14:11

I have a penchant for the exclamation mar actually.......think i probably use it too much.

stealthsquiggle · 17/03/2008 14:12

I find myself re-reading emails before sending and removing most/all of the exclamation marks before I send them in order to avoid this

I would be seriously tempted to send back "I closed it last week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You stupid mare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Um,

Hello, my name is purpleduck.

I abuse exclamation points. I have been abusing for years now . I know I shouldn't, it's wrong, but it just feels sooo good. I mean, I'm a reasonably smart person - I'm getting an MA and everything. The thing is, > emails without exclamation points just seem so.....abrupt.

Maybe with support, I could stop. I suppose.

AHHHHH, I can't do it!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BearMama · 17/03/2008 14:19

YANBU.
Stupid woman. Too many exclamation marks say

"I am neurotic and have no self-esteem"

"I have a mental age of 12"

"I am Different With Boys"

"My bedroom has a pink frilly valance and loads of dolls on the bed"

"Mummy and Daddy didnt love me enough. Now I have to POKE you with exclamation marks in revenge."

"Does my bum look big in this"

I am picturing her as Arabella Weir right now.

Drusilla · 17/03/2008 14:20

And why have some people started to leave a space between the end of the work and the punctuation? That seems to be a New Thing. I have only noticed people doing that in the last few years.

VinegarTitsSucksEggs · 17/03/2008 14:23

pmsl @ sheik getting x's from her client

boudoiricca · 17/03/2008 14:26

Haha Bearmama!

I had to communicate with a man in China whose name was X-- for work. He started signing emails, "cheers, x". Which I thought was rather overfamiliar but a sign of my incredibly magnetic personality. Until I realised that they weren't kisses, but his first initial...

I will do all of the above, as long as you learn to use exclamation marks properly as an important aspect of business etiquette.

Exclamation marks should be used to express surprise, anger, disbelief or other strong emotion. They should be used sparingly or they lose their effect, and are seldom appropriate in academic writing.

Put exclamation marks or full stops in the appropriate places in this passage.

We were three days out to sea when a ferocious storm blew up What a catastrophe The mast broke "Man the lifeboats" shouted the Captain. Suddenly we were plunged into the raging sea. "Blow your whistle to attract attention" yelled the Bosun.

You have my full permission to use as many exclamation marks next time you are lost at sea.

Yours,
Iklboo

BearMama · 17/03/2008 18:24

Boudoir - as long as you didnt send kisses in return?
