Crying - please help with floor grouting

Hi. I have just bought a new house (first time buyer). Spent more than I can afford (well close to) on a brand new kitchen. We went for limestone effect porcelain tiles (matte).

Ive had to be without my karcher for two months - got lost in the move. Full disclosure we have 2 golden retrievers. I’ve done my best with the flash speed mop but the floors have been trashed.

Gave it a good clean but the grout looks
disgusting still. I’ve told DH not to walk the dogs in the woods but he has ignored me. Dh has called me not to get fixated.

How can I get them back? Do I need to regrout?

As other posters have pointed out, you cannot have a perfect house if you are the owner of 2 golden retrievers. I have a goldie who loves to swim in the sea, consequently our floors are always covered in sand. I've just got used to it now.

I can't really see much difference, to be fair (your kitchen and floor look lovely). Maybe I just have low standards! 😂

I thought the same op!!! I can’t tell the difference

Bearpawk · 03/01/2024 14:56

Grout is porous. It's always going to absorb the dirt, even if you give it a wipe straight after walking the dogs. Short of being prepared to scrub it all the time I would re grout dark grey. Or stop stressing about it and learn to cope with it.

I think I may have OCD. Exhibit other OCD linked behaviours (hair pulling). If I see the curtains are asymmetrical I have to go fix.

I think maybe go see a doctor and seek treatment, hair, pulling must be very extreme, as is crying over totally fine grouting. For your own sake.💐

You are fighting a loosing battle, let them all get dirty ( purposely dirty some) so they are all a mid grey colour colour and then they will all blend in, no one will know they were not mid grey to start with.
Get DH to clean up after the dogs in future

That's exactly what I was thinking.

The woods turn into a mud bath. Still takes them. Only got worse since we’ve replaced carpet downstairs with wood/tile as he now says “that’s why we invested in hard floors”. No effort to minimise muddy paw prints at all now.

Long haired dogs, 35 kg. Not an easy clean up job.

So is he taking them out and letting them get muddy and then letting them into the house to track mud everywhere without even trying to clean them up first because floors are your responsibility? So he just doesn’t care if they get them filthy because you have to clean it up?

If that’s the case then your husband is a complete douche. Have one or two set days that you clean the floors and every time he brings the dogs in dirty to make a mess for you in between those days he can clean it up himself. Arsehole.

Edit: Especially if he’s also purposely waiting until it rains to walk them like you said in another post. If he’s deliberately being disrespectful and making more work for you then you have much bigger problems than grout and would get different responses if you had focused on his behaviour.

The dogs are 8 - would be perfectly happy walking along the path down by the river but DH insists the woods by our house are their “favourite”. Sure, no problem in Summer or when we’ve had a dry spell.

Causes a lot of resentment. He does the dishes/surfaces and floors are
my job

Your dogs wellbeing in more important than your grout. You need to get over this. You are simply in the wrong and being unreasonable.

MikiSu · 03/01/2024 14:59

You've got 2 dogs, of course your house wont stay spotless- that's my main reason for not having pets (the kids give it a fair go at making their own mess!)

MadeOfAllWork · 03/01/2024 15:01

I can see more of a difference in the second picture, but not so much that I would get upset.
I do think this is part of a bigger picture about both your relationship and your mental health.

Avacardo2023 · 03/01/2024 15:06

There is no need to ever cry over grout! Spend about £300 getting the floor regrouted in darker coloured epoxy grout. To be honest it doesn't look like they did a good job of the grout anyway.

You need to let your DH live his life and enjoy walking the dogs whenever he wants. Houses get dirty, it's not a big deal.

Westernesse · 03/01/2024 15:06

Loussa · 03/01/2024 14:15

Yes I can be “fixated” and a nag. I do my best to keep myself in check as he probably does his fair share or there about a. Certainly does the jobs I don’t like

Why can’t you keep yourself in check? Crying about grout is not normal and you will alienate him.

you must know this or you wouldn’t asking. So just stop.

Loussa · 03/01/2024 13:56

You can see the contrast - above the towel is where dogs can’t go. Tbh I could probably steam mop below the rug a bit more but the karcher was giving me a blister!

Ive begged dh to be better. A quick swipe with the spray mop/flash speed mop is not enough!

Oh my God who cares. The difference to anyone but you is barely noticeable even when you look for it.

It is truly and completely batshit to curtail the lives of the actual beings who live in your house for the sake of the floor grout. Actually insane. Either regrout in a darker colour or accept that absolutely nobody but you even notices, but a mad mopping schedule or the dogs not getting dirty are not remotely realistic options.

stayathomer · 03/01/2024 15:11

Am with BusySittingDown- I must have low standards as it all looks good to me. I’m the nicest way leave your dh alone and enjoy the dogs!!! (I don’t know how to say this nicely but I don’t mean to be mean!!)

Ohnotyoutoo · 03/01/2024 15:14

Did you seal the grout when you had the tiles laid?

Vinegar and a good scrub helps.

Pancakeorcrepe · 03/01/2024 15:14

OP please seek help for your condition or it will ruin your life and your relationships.
You already seem to have a lot of resentment towards your partner and your dogs and you are making their lives harder. This cannot be good for you.

Of course he's not deliberately waiting until it rains to walk the dogs to torture OP, and the fact that OP thinks he is says that some mental health support is now probably needed.

AgentProvocateur · 03/01/2024 15:21

Honestly, it’s barely noticeable and it’s floor grout!! Who cares? I think seeing your GP would be a good idea.

fishonabicycle · 03/01/2024 15:23

We had cream tiles and cream grout at my last house - I used a scrubbing brush and diluted bleach - worked really well.

CantGetInToday · 03/01/2024 15:27

Crying is really quite extreme. You cannot expect to have a properly clean house with those two dogs. Not just the grout area either.

Try and aim to be ‘good enough’ in all areas of life rather than perfect. It makes things so much easier.

Mazuslongtoenail · 03/01/2024 15:28

My dog is a lazy sod who won’t go near muddy woods. But my tiles still look like that. It’s life and general activity I’m afraid.

We Scrubbed all our grout on hands and knees with a toothbrush a while ago. It was painstaking and then still happens so I think I’m living with the discolouration now.

whowhatwerewhy · 03/01/2024 15:30

I say this kindly but , get a grip , dogs and a clean house don't go together.
The floor looks fine stop fixating.

I thought this too. OP needs to get some help with her mental health.

LifeExperience · 03/01/2024 15:34

You being disproportionately upset over the grout is a symptom of your mental health issues. Please talk to your GP.

Nicole1111 · 03/01/2024 15:59

Kindly you need cbt

SquirrelHash · 03/01/2024 16:11

It will all kind of blend in and "season" in time, like a good cast iron sauce pan, a copper kettle, or the patina on the Statue of Liberty.

And it will be liberating.

Unclench if you can...
