To just drive the bloody car? Tax related!

Bought a new to me car yesterday - it's perfect and everything I want but it's under a disabled tax exemption and I've spent all day trying to get it removed so I can tax it myself!

The DVLA website told me to ring them. I did. The automated line was zero help so I googled. I have to go to a post office. Okay. The one down the street from me does car tax. Walked there in the rain. They can't help and I have to ring the DVLA. The car is showing as taxed online and I have an appointment that I need to attend in the morning - WIBU to just drive the bloody car? I don't have anyone who can give me a lift and public transport can't get me there!

Maybe because of it's engine size there will be zero £ due?

muddyford · 03/01/2024 13:07

Mine had the same exemption. I had to go to the post office with the salesman to tax it. No problem since.

Hadalifeonce · 03/01/2024 13:07

If you are saying the car is taxed, why would you not drive it?
When I recently bought a car, I had to tax it at the showroom.

IroningThrone · 03/01/2024 13:08

It definitely needs to be taxed! It's under a a disabled tax exemption at the moment and because I don't have that it needs removing before I can tax it normally. But I've been passed from pillar to post with zero help and I don't know what else to do, tbh!

All cars need to be taxed, even if they are zero rated. Your local PO should be able to help, are there any others nearby you could try? I'd just drive the car until it's sorted, I accidentally drove mine around without tax for months and had no idea!

premiur · 03/01/2024 13:24

Where did you buy it? Surely they can remove their tax

willitevergetwarm · 03/01/2024 13:25

The current tax status should cancel when you register the car online in your name and you can then tax it straight away. Our salesman done it all the DVLA ownership bits for us while we were there and we taxed it online before we left the sales office

IroningThrone · 03/01/2024 13:29

It was from a private seller and the log book Las been posted to the DVLA!

This should have been done my the car showroom before you took the keys, its their job to make sure its ready for you to take

I bought it from a private seller.

Years and years ago I had to go into DVLA local office to sort out a tax exempt car.

nwdx · 03/01/2024 13:33

I forgot to tax my car for almost a month and nothing happened

if it's showing as taxed on DVLA website then no one will even notice so I'd drive it to the appointment. It's not like you haven't tried.

Our previous car was a disability vehicle and yes it has to be done at a post office - try calling around different post offices to see if they can do it before you go. And you can drive there, don't walk in the rain

fatandhappy47 · 03/01/2024 13:33

The seller should have cancelled the tax before you took the car

The seller wouldn't have been paying tax on it. It's a disability vehicle

Savedpassword · 03/01/2024 13:36

Did the seller give you a new keeper slip?

Grimmz · 03/01/2024 13:36

You can go ahead and drive it. The risk is that someone checks your vehicle and discovers that it's not taxed properly and you get fined. It's not ideal but I can't imagine the risk of getting caught is very high if you're just talking about a couple of days while you try to get it sorted

quicklybeendrivenmad · 03/01/2024 13:37

You need the log book in order to change the tax class from disabled at the post office you could try filling in a v62 in your name it will cost £25 plus the cost of the tax, just remember to put the correct tax class not disabled on the form, if you need any help pm me worked in the motor trade 20 plus years

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 03/01/2024 13:37

Bought a car last night. The previous owner filled in the online bit and it changed the tax status straight away.

have you got the green slip?

ActDottie · 03/01/2024 13:37

I would. I don’t think you’d get pulled over because of the exemption so wouldn’t flag on a system. As long as you keep trying to actively resolve the issue I think it’s fine. It seems silly to have a car you can’t drive.

whynotwhatknot · 03/01/2024 13:37

phone the seller and ask them to contact dvla to remove it

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 03/01/2024 13:39

The Gov website says you can do this at a PO that deals with car tax.

I'd certainly drive it.

The lad up the road was driving his car with no tax or MOT and it reeking of weed every time he drove past, the Police got actively annoyed when we asked them to do something about it.

YouveGotAFastCar · 03/01/2024 13:40

If the seller has done their bit online, it changes pretty instantly. If it's glitched for some reason and not worked, you could be driving an untaxed car at any point - but it's more likely the seller hasn't done their bit, it clears SO quickly.

IroningThrone · 03/01/2024 13:42

The seller didn't do anything online. The log book had been posted instead. (He was an older man and didn't have Internet!)

I have the slip. The post office I went to was a main one but the member of staff couldn't help me and told me to ring the DVLA. The car is still showing as taxed online.

Where I live the dvla come round the streets once a month and clamp all untaxed cars !
I never used to worry about overdue tax until I moved here !
