DS is 18 and passed his test last week. Due to where we live having crap public transport, his part time job being a pain to get to, me being sick of having to give lifts, family dynamics and him wanting to start an apprenticeship after college it’s very much in our interest to get him a car. DH and I are not wealthy and need to do this in the absolute cheapest way possible. Please could people with DC of a similar age please tell us what the absolute cheapest you can do this for including insurance, tax, other costs etc.

Haha @OneMoreTime23 yes I’m not a fraudster and neither is she!

when you get insurance quotes, have a play around with adding in other named drivers - so insure in name of son but then add in yourself or your husband.

Weirdly having a second person can sometimes bring the cost down. maybe they think that you will be driving it some of the time so less risk or something - don't no why and doesn't always work as depends on risks of the specific individuals but it can result in several £100 savings.

Yes I didn’t add my name initially as I was coming to the end of the 5 year since insurance claim period. Just one month after that 5 years and it brought her premium down by £300+. Then she updated her job and that saved a further £160!

Moped because it'll teach him roadsense and adjusting to conditions/anticipation/not charging down the road like Mad Max with the stereo on ear bleeding volumes before he ends up wrapping a car round a tree or upside down in a ditch with five of his closest mates.

DD owns the car and is the main driver and has insurance in her own name, but adding me as an additional named driver brought her premium down by quite a bit.

But as others have said, there is nothing cheap about getting a young driver on the road.

My son did this and it was a decent reduction but then when he was about 25 or 26 it changed and he was cheaper without me, possibly due to me being over 65?

Yes, even adding a third driver can sometimes bring a policy down further.
DS got £600 off for adding his father and a further £200 for adding me.
Black boxes are still a thing.
Hyundai i10 was about the cheapest we found to insure.
Keeping it off the road, on a drive, reduced policy costs for us.
Postcode lottery is a factor too. It's cheaper to insure in low crime areas.
