Inspired by the similar post of the OP turning 30 this year, I’m turning 40 this year and would love to hear what you would tell your 40 year old self?

Following with interest. I'm 40 next week!

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 02/01/2024 13:40

I’ve been 40 a few months now. It’s exactly the same as being in your 30s but I give less fucks.

Its very liberating tbh! Make sure you make the most of the celebrations!!

newnamechangeforthisone · 02/01/2024 13:52

40 this week! I haven't even planned what I'm doing for it!

Catza · 02/01/2024 13:56

Turned 40 a few months ago and agree with the PP. It's no different to being 30 (except a little stiffer in the mornings). The best advice I can give is to look after your body.

RobertaFirmino · 02/01/2024 14:00

@Youcannotbeseriousreally You're spot on there, it really is liberating! I dreaded my 40th but now I'm 47 and I really like being this age (apart from peri!).
You really do start giving less of a fuck, I imagine that's all down to previous life experience teaching you that things will work out and the stuff that simply isn't worth worrying about.
My advice is to start building up a collection of cotton night wear and bedding for future use and use retinol. Get a cheap mild retinol cream for the backs of your hands too, Boots own will suffice.

I turned 44 recently and it’s the best decade of my life in some ways tbh. I’m way less concerned about my appearance and just getting on with living my life.

I have made some tweaks like microblading my brows which has made a really big difference to my face and I wear very little make up. I get more compliments from men and women these days than I ever had when I was young. I think it’s just confidence and knowing what suits you.

On the flip side, enjoy the lull before menopause. I am peri at the moment and it’s seriously dark in my head some days of the month.

Willywanker1 · 02/01/2024 14:01

Leave your partner now. Don't waste another year.

TheFoz · 02/01/2024 14:05

Life is so so short. Do what makes you happy.

Hendalle · 02/01/2024 14:07

‘83 baby here, don’t worry ‘84 babies it’s not that bad.

Pretty much the same as being 39, and to be fair I’ve felt better than I did in my 20s for many years now 😃

BashfulClam · 02/01/2024 14:07

I hope you like ibuprofen!

GrandTheftWalrus · 02/01/2024 14:08

I'm 40 this year too. But with various problems I already feel 95 so turning 40 won't be an issue.

AndWordsWhen · 02/01/2024 14:23

To me you are still young, so enjoy it!

MummyInTheNecropolis · 02/01/2024 14:43

I’m turning 40 next month. Planning to make the most of the celebrations, I’m going to the theatre and then the ritz for cocktails on the actual day with my 2 best friends, followed by a trip to Las Vegas a few weeks later with another 8 of my friends. I can’t wait!

Hoping all of that will take my mind off the fact that I’m getting old 🙈

FuzzyPuffling · 02/01/2024 14:51

You'll never be younger than today.

Strokethefurrywall · 02/01/2024 14:55

40s are brilliant! I turned 44 in October and honestly, I'm just getting better and better!

I'm healthier, fitter, stronger, smarter and don't give a shit what anyone else thinks of me. I feel much, much freer!

sorrynotathome · 02/01/2024 15:00

Enjoy it and ignore all the doom mongering about menopause. Focus on your physical and mental health - it will help in the decades to come!

Thoughts from a 60+ year old:

If you need to lose weight, do it now, it only gets harder.

If you don't currently exercise, prioritise finding some form of activity you enjoy. I was exercise phobic but now love walking and dance fit type classes.

If you don't already, statt moisturising: face, eyes, body, hands. Amongst my similar aged friends, you can really tell who does and who doesn't.

Take a good long look at your finances, depending on your circumstances, consult an FA, and start understanding what you need to do to plan for a decent and possibly early retirement. Seems a long way off but it really isn't and some good planning now might give you more choices in the future.
