Would you get DD4 seen for 40.7 fever ?

It only started in last night and responds to medicine.

But she keeps shivering and spiking up to 40.7.

I need to give meds every 3 hours at the most before it spikes that high again.

I don't know where it's coming from. No cough, cold, throat looks ok to me ( I'm not a doctor ).

She's been to the bathroom fine, I've been making her drink lots of water etc / trying to keep her cool.

I wouldn't usually go to seek help so fast, but the fever keeps spiking so high.

What medicine are you giving her? And how many doses has she had since last night?

Goldwakeme · 02/01/2024 12:43

Is she feeling unwell other than being hot? Any rash?

4 doses since 10 pm. Paracetamol and ibuprofen alternating.

I can't see a rash anywhere.

She's very unwell right now but her fever is really high.

When it comes down, she's been ok.

Get her seen! If she's really unwell with a spiking temp she absolutely needs to see a doctor.

Oliveandcheese · 02/01/2024 12:47

I think I would call the gp for an unexplained fever that high

İcantusethat · 02/01/2024 12:47

Fever of unknown origin? Yes I'd get her seen.

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 02/01/2024 12:48

Be careful not to overdose, I think it’s 4 doses in 24 hours with some medicines like calpol or nurofen. I would get her seen if it’s no better after that many doses

Fraaahnces · 02/01/2024 12:48

Yes. And try and cool her down a bit too with a cool cloth and light clothing.

Jellycats4life · 02/01/2024 12:49

I would. I’ve never seen a fever that high in my own children.

Cinders15 · 02/01/2024 12:49

Take her to A&E
My daughter's temp kept spiking so rang 111 and was advised to go to A&E
She was detected with Influenza A and a chest infection on Christmas Eve
She got intravenous antibiotics, rehydrated etc and is fine now
She teaches reception

Yesthatsitnow · 02/01/2024 12:51

Yes absolutely! It could be sepsis. Shivering but a high temp is one of the signs. Does she have any others?

Fast heart rate
Low blood pressure
Clammy/sweaty
Confusion
Shortness of breath
Rash
pain/discomfort

tbh I would go to hospital over GP

CattingAbout · 02/01/2024 12:51

I'd ring 111 for advice - they might say A&E, or they might be able to get her seen urgently by a GP or paediatrics (which is preferable to sitting in A&E)

NeverMindIGuess · 02/01/2024 12:53

My DS was similar a few months ago, spiked to 40.9 with no obvious reason.

No obvious cause is more reason to see a GP so I'd definitely get her seen today.

Catsfrontbum · 02/01/2024 12:54

Fraaahnces · 02/01/2024 12:48

Yes. And try and cool her down a bit too with a cool cloth and light clothing.

Cool cloth is not recommended as it can confused the body.

Cool clothing is fine, or better yet strip her off and give her an ice lolly.

DS used to get regular fevers that were very high (40 and over) and Dr was pretty laid back about them!

She only shivers when her temp goes back up.

She's stopped shivering now and her temp has gone down to 39.7

Allmarbleslost · 02/01/2024 13:05

Yes she needs to see a doctor

margotrose · 02/01/2024 13:06

She needs to be seen, that's a very high fever.

toomanyleggings · 02/01/2024 13:06

my second dd spikes fevers that high and has been fine but never hurts to get them seen

poorlya · 02/01/2024 13:09

Yeah both my children have fevers like this, although more like 40.5 max. But it does happen to them unfortunately.

My youngest usually has tonsils when his fever gets that high. My DD can have high fevers when she has a virus sometimes. But it's been a while.

She's got an appointment in an hour.

OP posts:
Tygertiger · 02/01/2024 13:09

Phone 111 and ask them for advice. That’s what they’re there for. A fever over 40 is high so I would be getting her checked out.

Ohnotyoutoo · 02/01/2024 13:10

Glad you're getting her seen, OP. That is a very high temperature.

poorlya · 02/01/2024 13:10

GP gave me an appointment really fast, so I'll just go there for now.

I'm reassured by the fact that the fever is now at 39.5. No more shivering now.

OP posts:
Authorinwaiting · 02/01/2024 13:22

39.5 is still pyrexic! In hospital this is still an abnormal presentation. I wouldn't be reassured by that

AbsoFrickingLuteley · 02/01/2024 13:24

I know you've already got an appointment but yes for a fever that high with not many other symptoms I'd get her checked out.
