Man in Tk Max today …

Millymollymaisy · 02/01/2024 00:15

I popped out alone today to my local Tk Max ( don’t know why it’s usually a failed visit but needed some time out the house ) I was browsing the bedding isle and a man came to the entrance of where I was standing and said more to himself but also to me ‘ oh wow she’s a lovely looking girl so lovely , yeah really nice ‘

i knew what I heard but dismissed it and didn’t look at him and he walked away. When I came downstairs to the ground floor he was there again in front of me and repeated almost talking to himself the same kind of things ‘ she’s so lovely wow she looks lovely what a lovely looking girl ‘ this time we locked eyes and walked past to the till.

I really don’t know why but it disturbed me ! I felt amongst scared ! While lining to pay I was looking to see where he now was and was worried about if he would come near me again or worse me waiting outside.

im 40 so not a girl. I’m attractive but never had an experience like this ( normally just looks but that’s normal for me wherever I go ) Any tips on what to do if this happens again? He never pushed it further or tried to directly talk to me it was more talking to himself about me out loud . Bizarre

I'd bet my last fiver psychosis and just chatting to himself.

Unfortunately there is a massive problem with underfunding people, especially men with learning disabilities, mental health conditions and nd that requires support workers to accompany them out in the community. They're usually more of a danger to themselves and very vulnerable because they say things that are inappropriate or lack capacity to assess situations that may get them harmed.

My uncle has psychosis and used to chat to all the old dears in the local cafe about the times he'd shared touring with elvis and the beatles, about his time hanging out with all the greats and they'd just let him waffle his shite, give him tea and he'd come home.
BTW I don't think my uncle was even on the planet the same time as elvis. If uncle's stories had a ounce of reality to them, he'd have the greatest autobiography!

I used to care for a man who was similar to my uncle, just with more learning difficulties and he tried to convince everyone he was bff's with Jesus but he'd tell all women they were pretty "like my mum". Which sounds creepy having a dude in his 50s say, "you're pretty like my mum", but he just loved his mam.

Because men in general are often such letchy, sex pesty fuckers its hard to find tolerance for those poor fellas who mean no harm but who are systemic failures.

I'm sure you think that you're attractive but how do you know he was talking about you.?
If you think he might have mental health issues then I don't think his comments carry much weight

Sounds like some sort of neurodiversity or illness. Yes it's creepy behaviour but I think you did the right thing just carrying on and keeping an eye out incase it was something more sinister

Oh here we go. Man behaves inappropriately so someone sees fit to align predatory behaviour with autism. Just stop it.

No one said anything about autism.

Snowdogsmitten · 02/01/2024 06:31

Any tips on what to do if this happens again

Irs unlikely to.

No, I won’t stop it thanks. Cop on to yourself.

@Fionaville maybe. Maybe he was also trying to find covert ways to invade her space, knowing full well what he was doing. Whichever way you look at it, his behaviour was predatory. I am not surprised the OP was scared - I would have been too. In fact, I've had similar experiences before.

Were you there?

Newsenmum · 02/01/2024 11:00

Probably mentally unwell. Try not to think on it.

Next time do a loud fart or turn around pulling an unattractive face or bark, that gets them to fuck off.

Bark 😂 this really made me chuckle, next we'll be reading an AIBU to run out of TK Maxx without stopping when the lady across the clothes rack started barking at me 😂 out weird the weirdness. Woof woof.

mumsytoon · 02/01/2024 11:48

What tips do you need? Usually just common sense. Avoid, ignore, report to store security, look around as you walk outside? No one needs to tell you this surely?

DRS1970 · 02/01/2024 11:52

I understand why you are concerned. But to be honest it sounds like he is suffering from a mental illness and is verbalising what should be his inner monologue.

BTW, I am impressed that TK Max have a whole "isle" of bedding... They must be expanding their stores... 😁

ManateeFair · 02/01/2024 12:02

He was clearly mentally ill. Surely you must have come across people behaving oddly in public before? He was talking to himself and he didn't approach you. Forget about it.

ExtraOnions · 02/01/2024 12:06

Did he have a Bluetooth earpiece in … I’ve seen people wandering around, looking like they are talking to themselves, but actually they are on the phone. Earpieces are really small as well

If we’re going down that route, it’d be more appropriate to say people rather than men - women can do this kind of thing too, especially during a MH episode.

Armychefbethebest · 02/01/2024 12:09

There's a lot of people like this unfortunately. The worst one I encountered was when my now 16 year old was weeks old and a man started shouting at me that my baby is going to die and trying to get closer to her pram. Very unpleasant, he was very obviously having his own difficulties but that one threw me couldn't get out of the shop quick enough. The best thing you can do is not engage, try not to make eye contact and do not laugh if you witness this kind of behaviors the person is obviously mentally unwell.

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 02/01/2024 15:09

Some people with Tourette’s Syndrome have a phrase or words they repeat involuntarily. As the words used in your two encounters were the same or similar it does suggest this may have been the case.
