Hands so itchy they feel like they’re burning

NC because I feel a bit silly posting this.

About 15 minutes ago my entire hand - palms in particular, started itching like crazy, first just the left and now both. No matter how much I itch it will NOT go and my left hand literally feels like it’s on burning.

I googled it because it’s never happened to me before and came on so randomly - my skin isn’t dry, don’t have eczema or psoriasis, no allergies etc - and it came up that it can be associated with diabetes.

I’ve been told I’m borderline diabetic and actually have an appointment with a diabetes nurse on Thursday - just wondering if this has happened to anyone else, diabetes or not, and how you got rid of the itch and burning sensation?

I am SO uncomfortable right now and I think I’m
going to rip my skin off the amount I’m itching!

Do you have any antihistamines in the house? Might alleviate the itch until morning. If not cold water. I get itch from another problem and it is enough to drive one crazy.
In the Pharmacy l got Eurax to lessen itch but not much use telling you this at midnight but might be helpful tomorrow. Check with pharmacist if it is appropriate to put on your hands.

I had this on my foot soles once. I ended up scratching them with a suede brush it was so bad. They were raw.

I found out it was an allergy to antibiotics I was taking and told to stop taking them immediately.

That was my first sign of diabetes and can be either hands or feet. There's lots of stuff about how it's associated with diabetic neuropathy but that's not true for me. It seems to happen when I've gone a bit crazy on the sugar and carbs or if I'm a bit run down and overdoing things. Being warm (e.g lying in bed) triggers it. I often get little skin infections at the same time.

I got this last year and I went to the doctors . They took meds and told me I was pre-diabetic. I was given some steroid cream and it went away.

@Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie yup - it definitely coincided with an excess of my Mother's Christmas cake. Not touching it this year!

KnowledgeableMomma · 02/01/2024 01:23

It definitely sounds like it COULD be neuropathy, especially as you are pre-diabetic. I'm glad you have an appointment coming up. But, in the meantime, could you try taking an oral antihistamine and rub some hydrocortisone cream directly on the hand? On the off chance that this is a reaction to something, those will help.

Could you be pregnant? Unbearably itchy hands and feet happened to me when I had obstetric cholestasis, which is as I understand it is a disorder of the liver (and which mercifully goes away the instant you have the baby).

If you must scratch, use a crumpled-up plastic bag, which won't make you bleed. (I realised something was very wrong when I found myself scrubbing the sole of one foot with a bunch of keys....)

Hand foot and mouth

Do you have kids/ been around small kids recently??

Zandrazanzara · 02/01/2024 01:37

Did you eat fresh figs? Fig sap can cause an unbearable itch.

mathanxiety · 02/01/2024 01:56

This happened to me once. I had been using bleach without rubber gloves, and followed that with a quick rinse and an application of hand cream. Bad idea.

Whattodowithit88 · 02/01/2024 01:59

Run them under Luke warm water for a good three minutes, no soap, just water.

Could be diabetic symptom, most likely an allergic reaction, people have develop allergy’s anytime, even if it’s something they wasn’t previously allergic to

Whattodowithit88 · 02/01/2024 02:00

Also don’t moisturise, just run them under water that’s like warm.
