To think patients with eupd shouldn’t be on acute mental health ward

Seen so much bullying bu this. A lot seem to use it for views on tik tok dancing while in a crisis.

It isn't easy to get admitted to an acute ward. There is a lot of pressure on beds. There will be a good reason why everyone is there, but people will react differently to each other once admitted.

One diagnosis isn't more valid than another though.

Hermittrismegistus · 02/01/2024 01:22

Where else are they supposed to be put when being a risk? They're well known for doing whatever it takes to get themselves admitted as they find it a comfort.

We really need more specialist mental health treatment centres available.

LauderSyme · 02/01/2024 01:34

I have read that EUPD is one of the most difficult, overwhelming and emotionally painful mental illnesses to live with, so on that basis YABU.

It is also suggested that people with EUPD can be some of the most disruptive and toxic personalities to interact with, so on that basis YANBU.

AllIsWellish · 02/01/2024 01:37

Where do you think they should be if not an acute ward?

trippily · 02/01/2024 01:39

Just burn us at the stake ay

TomatoSandwiches · 02/01/2024 01:42

Respectfully op YABU but I can understand why you may have that opinion.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/01/2024 01:43

I'm not sure you should base NHS funding and clinical decisions on what someone posts on Tik Tok.

Josette77 · 02/01/2024 01:44

Why not out of curiosity?

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 02/01/2024 01:47

I agree, OP.

NewYearGnome · 02/01/2024 01:54

Sorry, but what is EUPD?

Gingerkittykat · 02/01/2024 01:54

Are you basing your opinion on some TikTok videos or something else?

StBrides · 02/01/2024 01:59

NewYearGnome · 02/01/2024 01:54

Sorry, but what is EUPD?

Emotionally unstable personality disorder

MCOut · 02/01/2024 02:01

YABU patients sometimes have to wait for days in A&E to get a bed so if they’re in there it’s because they need to be.

oneflewoverthe · 02/01/2024 02:01

eupd is this a medical term?

Hermittrismegistus · 02/01/2024 02:02

oneflewoverthe · 02/01/2024 02:01

eupd is this a medical term?

Emotionally unstable personality disorder, formally known as Borderline personality disorder.

2024GarlicCloves · 02/01/2024 02:02

oneflewoverthe · 02/01/2024 02:01

eupd is this a medical term?

Yes. It's the more accurate term for borderline personality disorder.

oneflewoverthe · 02/01/2024 02:03

Ah interesting. I thought the terms seemed similar.

XenoBitch · 02/01/2024 02:04

YABVU.
Being on a MH ward saved my life, as it has done many other people I know. This was before TikTok, and I can assure you that we did not dance or make light of it. I have been sectioned, restrained, medicated against my will. Social media was the last of my concerns.

Getting admitted to a ward is really hard, even for people who are begging for help, and even when their families are begging for help too.

EUPD is a valid MH diagnosis that already carries with it a lot of stigma. It follows you everywhere. I have been treated like shit for breaking a bone in my foot because of the label tagged into my notes under a 'patient alert' like it is an allergy and something HCPs should notice above all else.

Actually, DFOD

Hadebough · 02/01/2024 02:05

Why shouldn't they be? no one chooses which mental health difficulty to have, no diagnosis is worth more than another. There's enough stigma for people with eupd as it is.

BungleandGeorge · 02/01/2024 02:18

Can’t really understand your post. If you’re saying acute medical wards can be damaging to some people with mental health issues and we need to fund more appropriate care YANBU. If you’re saying that they’re just there for ‘attention’ and not really unwell YABVVVU. It’s really difficult to get a space on one of those wards and people have to be very at risk. Whether you can use TikTok or not is not a diagnostic criteria

miniaturepixieonacid · 02/01/2024 02:43

Why not? It's at the more serious end of the mental illness severity scale and really hard to treat.

Pickles2023 · 02/01/2024 02:59

You know they are also individuals? That a diagnosis doesnt suddenly mean they are all clones and personality and presentation will all be the same?

But i feel they need treatment and support..a mental health hospital doesnt do that. All hospital can do is stablise it isnt a long term solution. But unfortunately whilst stigma of thinking they are all a pack of animals that attention seek, i doubt they would fund individual specialist programmes.. the view is prevelant among professionals aswell i have noticed.

All mental illness needs more funding imo irregardless of the condition. It can be quite scary for families/children involved witnessing and experiencing loved ones even those in public go through it.

(I have lost a few family members through various mental illness, a couple due to presumptions about them impacting their care)

NaughtybutNice77 · 02/01/2024 03:20

It's unfortunate for all. Maybe ADHD and autistic kids shouldn't be in mainstream schools and COPD patients who cough too much should be excluded from wards....oh and crying babies in supermarkets.
If they're admitted to a psychiatric ward they're ill. They may well be making TT videos today but tomorrow (or 1hr later) they could be wishing they were dead. Its almost as if they were mentally stable...

Jumpingpogosticks · 02/01/2024 05:20

To be honest, I don't think that you can label all people with EUPD into the same category.

It is a very painful mental health illness to live with, yes, some people just want some attention, but that stems from their pain, some people will also not want attention and will suffer relatively quietly. Most people end up with EUPD because they've been abused. I have the diagnosis myself and I don't know anyone with it who didn't suffer quite extensively throughout their childhood. It is also a condition with a very high suicide rate.

I've never been hospitalised for my mental health, surprisingly, despite also having GAD, Health anxiety, Bipolar, OCD, C-PTSD and depression to manage as well.

But I do know people who have been in several times. One lady has been in probably every year for fairly extended periods, and doesn't have her children. I wouldn't categorise that as looking for attention. I find it really sad for her, and her children that every time she's come out of hospital, armed with a new medication regime, and new coping mechanisms, often a new place to live, that she has to start life over again, which inevitably falls apart again. She's had 2 friends that she's made whilst an in patient, that have killed themselves. She's given up on being in her children's lives because she doesn't want to be inconsistency to them, but can't figure out how to be stable.
