To think why would you bring your sick children to a party?

I’ve come to a party at my friends house, brought my two kids along, there are two other kids here. My little one was playing alongside them. My little one has fallen asleep and her kids have settled down a bit more. It turns out they both have temps, coughing constantly everywhere and then one of them has coughed so much they have thrown up.

I am so mad, I’m due back to work and can’t afford to take any time off if my kid gets sick. Why do people do this, in close proximity

Because they are a moron. Send them home.

2024betterBebetter · 31/12/2023 23:29

I have a friend who does this, she has even taken her DD to parties recovering from vomiting bugs because she didn’t want her DD missing out 🙄. It’s selfish.

Whitegull · 31/12/2023 23:30

They do this because they care more about their own evening out than about inconveniencing others.

Takacupokindnessyet · 31/12/2023 23:33

They think oh it's just a cold it doesn't matter. My daughter spent the week before Christmas incubated in PICU with the flu. It matters

MiniMaxi · 31/12/2023 23:35

I fucking hate this. And dosing kids up on Calpol and sending them to school when they’re sick. They’re either selfish, or idiots, or both.

Genericusername3 · 31/12/2023 23:38

They should have at least warned you so you could base your decision around it, but yes I agree they shouldn’t be at a party mixing with other kids when they are sick like that. But the very least they could do is warn others that are going to be around them.

Although I don't like it, I know some parents do that because, like OP, they really can't afford to take the time off and they are desperate. At least if they get a call to collect they've banked some time at work. (Of course, some do do it because they don't want to deal with it too)

Absolutely no excuse for a party!

NannyMC · 31/12/2023 23:39

She has JUST left with her vomiting child saying she will come back for midnight as she doesn’t want to be sober

I can't begin to imagine how hard that must have been Flowers

JessicaBrassica · 31/12/2023 23:52

We're home tonight because 14yo is coughing ( to the point of almost throwing up). Think most of our friends have had this bug but just in case, we've cancelled and stayed home. Both kids frustrated at missing out.

I don't get why you'd take sick kids to spread bugs.

coxesorangepippin · 31/12/2023 23:58

Come back at midnight?!

No!!

It’s pure selfishness with a touch of stupidity thrown in. I’m sure all teachers can tell similar stories but I’ve had a parent bring her projectile vomiting child to the nativity play ( in costume) expecting him to be included, another parent “ sorry she’s late , she’s got awful diarrhoea, I had to clean the whole bathroom” and two kids ( separately) with concussion. One had actually been knocked unconscious and the parent put him in the car and drove him to school as she had a busy day ahead…..

MiniMaxi · 01/01/2024 15:37

@AuntMarch yes of course - but what about other parents that can’t afford to take time off either, but have to because their kid has got sick from a classmate? Or the kids that are missing loads of school because they catch everything that gets brought in?

If patient zero stayed home for a couple of days, time off would be minimized overall.

(I say this as someone whose kid goes to school with very few “have to be on site for shifts” type families btw - even those with SAHPs do it)

I'm a teacher & yep...the tales I could tell! 😡 Makes me SO cross.

We had a horrid virus take out half our year group on the run up to Xmas & so many poorly kids were sent in - I had a stand-off with 1 mum who shoved her very clearly ill & teary son towards me, clutching a bottle of calpol & packet of throat lozenges & said, "He'll be fine. I can't have him at home because I'm going Xmas shopping!" I told her she may as well take him home again as I'd definitely be calling her within the hour to come & collect him. She was furious...as was I!! 🤬

The flip side of this of course is schools these days come down like a tonne of bricks on people who keep their ill child off. I did the right thing and kept my child off when unwell this past term, unfortunately they caught a few very nasty bugs last term including sickness bugs and covid. I’m being dragged in for a meeting in January as a result. Parents can’t win whatever they do where schools are concerned.

Terrrence · 01/01/2024 18:54

My son has had a cough for 6 weeks. I'm taking him out tomorrow. I'm not going to keep him at home for another 6 weeks in case people call me a moron.

Flower35214 · 01/01/2024 18:58

@Terrrence it just isn't the same situation as the OP though. Nobody is expecting you to keep your child inside if they've had a cough that long. A temp, being sick and a cold is different though.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/01/2024 18:58

This happened with my DD when she was 2. She ended up in hospital with a mystery virus. I was livid.

tdino · 01/01/2024 19:02

We had a super one the other night when we went to a friends for kids supper. Six families, seventh turns up.

Stood at door, kids all dressed up.

We have chicken pox. I look at kids, I'm like is that not HFM.

Eh, could be, no idea.

Quick discussion round house, one mum says I'm sorry I will have to leave, we have a flight tomorrow.

They huff and puff. Leave. Come back with one child an hour later.

This child's fine.

We leave.

Everyone gets HFM and a nice sick bug to boot.
