To be feeling trapped at work

I’ve had the same job for 36 years( since leaving school) and I feel like I’m trapped now. My wages are on the higher side for a notoriously under paid job. I get 31 days holiday plus bank holidays. I don’t hate my job but I’m bored. I only have experience in my role. I wouldn’t earn what I do and get the holidays I get in the same role elsewhere. DH works a minimum wage job so I can’t afford a wage drop or to retrain. There is no way up or sideways in my current role. I just feel that all my hard graft to get the wage and the holidays is now trapping me there.

You can usually get experience if you don't mind doing some work for free - but if you want something really different, find out how to get into it and start on your plan. But you will have to accept that it won't be so comfortable - your job now is like a comfy pair of slippers and a new one would be less boring but more scary.

What do you want?

I’d like to work with disengaged kids (like my DS) he had a key worker who was amazing! She came to school with me to advocate for DS when he was refusing to go to school. She just had his back. She listened to us when no one else was. I’ve raised 2 ND sons both of whom have had bouts of poor MH. I just think it’s something I’d be good at and would really fulfill me. I did speak to her about how I could get into it. She said she had no qualifications just a big mouth 😂.
I think you’re right though about the comfy slippers! I’d have to accept a lower wage and less holidays.

I have a "Golden hand cuffs" type job too. Pays well, lots of holiday, really flexible and I'm bored witless!

My new years resolution is to just make the jump. You should too!
