To think we're about to see an influx of XL Bully attacks after a rehoming free for all?

So I know the ban is about to come in. Plenty for it, many against it. Not trying to start a debate about that!

Yesterday someone on my FB shared a post from a woman who was offering to rehome an XL to save it before the ban came in. Someone commented with a group for rehoming XLs before it's too late and banned and I clicked on it for a look.

I was absolutely gobsmacked by the posts on the group. Hundreds of posts going back weeks of XLs needing new homes (I suppose expected) - but a VERY high and panicked volume of posts over the past few days, as the ban approaches.

Lots of pictures of dogs with !!URGENT!! rehoming requests. From people asking on behalf of their friend, because their HA just told them XLs are banned under their tenancy, for the XL they just found abandoned behind Tesco, because they bred an XL litter this year and a buyer has just dumped an 8 month old pup back with them. Lots of reasons. Incredibly sad for the dogs, none of this is of their making.

But it's the reaponses. Comments and comments from people offering to rehome an XL to save them. Highlights were 'willing to take one but must be good with children as I have a 5 year old'. 'I wish I could have both but I'm in a flat so one is my limit, please contact me'. 'I have an XL already who is brilliant with the kids, happy to add another poor baby to our pack'.

Dogs are currently being panic-rehomed all over the Country. People are offering their services to transport the XL from Devon to the family in Yorkshire who've agreed to take it. No home checks, no behavioural checks of the dogs, people aren't even meeting the dog they're agreeing to home. Lots and LOTS being shipped to Scotland in particular where there's no ban.

It's truly frightening the amount of people with young dc agreeing to blindly rehome an XL to save them. I wouldn't rehome a bloody Yorkie without meeting the dog first never mind an XL!

This is going to end in tragedy, surely?

AIBU to think the ban on privately rehoming them should have been immediate at point of announcement to prevent this madness? And also that, sadly, we're likely to be reading several tragic stories in the coming weeks about one of these panic-rehomed dogs turning?

@Animalloveruropiniondntmatter
The law has dealt with the breeders.
It's now illegal to breed XL bullies.
You cannot advertise them or give them away.

Why do you disagree with the ban?

breathequietly · 01/01/2024 15:53

I met one of these in the park today! The woman clearly meant well and was experienced with dogs but she said "oh I got her 3 days ago and don't really know her history" and I was a bit terrified! It had a muzzle but was on a really long line.

@oakleaffy that is terrifying! You're very brave, thank god you and the poor dogs were okay.

I don't agree with the ban. It's based off opinions of those who have never come into contact with a XL bully dog.

Ian Price certainly came into contact with them. Unfortunately we'll never know his opinion of them as they mauled him to death.

Even XL Bully kennels are now warning about Human aggression in these dogs.

''It was like a Demon possessed him..in his mind he wanted her'' {the little girl}

This interview isn't an easy listen, but if the breeders are now speaking out about ''human aggression''.

Most UK XL Bullies are related to 'Killer' Kimbo.

Sounds a recipe for disaster.

A long line is not a good idea with a strong dog, it can build up speed and yank the line out of her hands.
If it's out of control on a long line, she will be breaking the law.

Coincidentally · 01/01/2024 16:22

Never mind about rehomimg - just put them down! Far too many dogs anyway - a mass cull would be a good thing.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 01/01/2024 16:48

Oh no doubt wont be long before we hear of incidents with these rehomed dogs.A couple of days ago there was a post by a rescue asking for a quick rehome before the ban with a dog that had just been rehomed and attacked the family dog.
Unfortunately a lot of well meaning but totally clueless people have been caught up in this and rehomed on the strength of the false XL bully propaganda that the dogs are loveable victims who wouldn’t hurt a fly.

GSD20 · 01/01/2024 16:48

The amount getting passed around on Facebook is ridiculous.

People calling them ‘standard bullies’ to try and get around the ban.
People with multiple dogs or children looking to take an unknown dog with sketchy history.
Dogs with a bite history being rehomed.
Unneutered and unmicrochipped animals being passed on.
Puppies too young to be separated from the bitch being rehomed.
Breeding animals being rehomed as pets with clueless people.
People unable to afford exemption certs.

The whole thing is a ticking time bomb.

oOiluvfriendsOo · 31/12/2023 17:33

Oh super, send them all to Scotland where all the responsible dog owners live.

Scotland does not want the dangerous, unwanted and mistreated dogs that irresponsible English breeders have brought into being. The sooner Scotland get the ban the better.

Calabou · 01/01/2024 17:07

All the responsible, caring owners whose dog was "part of the family" and wouldn't hurt a fly... now abandoning said "family member" or sending them off to be rehomed elsewhere. I guess the process to keep the dog was too much hassle for these loving owners.
Absolutely awful that Scotland is going to see a huge increase in them now, ridiculous that the Scottish Government won't implement a ban.

CoatOfArms · 01/01/2024 17:07

agree, @PTSDBarbiegirl. But don't hold your breath, the SNP are hellbent on doing the exact opposite from England/Wales whatever the policy may be. Because it furthers their "we're different, we need independence" argument. They do not give a single shiny shit about the dogs, or the people who have to live among the dogs. They are more idiotic than the idiots who are "rescuing" these chavbeasts, and that's saying something.

oakleaffy · 01/01/2024 17:09

It’s a complete disaster!
The women killed and mauled by their “ Rescue” Xl Bullies thought “
Love was enough”
It isn’t.

The legislation is stupid in that it doesn’t specifically mention a length of lead.

Someone mentioned an XL on a huge trailing lead - That won’t stop it attacking someone’s pet dog or child

Plus most women would be physically incapable of stopping an attack anyway- they’d let go of the lead because of not being strong enough to hold on.

Horses are half ton animals, but because of their long necks are easy to manage in a head collar.
These XLs are not physically easy for any one to safely control.
A Dane or Wolfhound is easy in comparison.

Calabou · 01/01/2024 17:16

Attached from Facebook a few minutes ago. Sadly lots of people prepared to flaunt the ban and get around it. Also saw plenty mention of WhatsApp groups you can join to buy/adopt XL bullies in secret.

But it’s clearly obvious what an XL Bully is.
They are recognisable a mile off.
People will definitely be videoing and reporting them.
They can call it what they like, but the “ Pumpkin head, the buttcrack line on top of the cranium , the wide head and Jaw and body.

A Staffie is a very different dog .

It seems like quite an easy process too; most of it can be done online!

  1. get third-party insurance online from the Dogs Trust for £25 a year. https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/support-us/companion-club They email you an insurance number or whatever.
  2. apply on gov.uk for an exemption certificate before February, quoting your insurance policy number.

But if you'd rather rehome your dog via bloody facebook than that form, maybe you didn't actually see it as a member of the family.

I saw someone on FB who.claimed to have rehomed 41 XLs in one day, she's just randomly giving them to anyone who wants one. My hairdressers daughters dog had a second "surprise" litter (second this year) and they've all gone to new homes already, yet are only 6 weeks old.

Our doggy friend isn't an xl bully but meets the measurements set out in the legislation so has to be muzzled and on a lead. He's such a lovely boy, everyone knows him.

Dog-fighting rings must be rubbing their hands together with glee.

How clueless can these people flipping be?

breathequietly · 01/01/2024 18:16

Yes the long line thing was really worrying. The dog was possibly the biggest strongest looking dog I've ever seen and there is no way I'd be able to get it off my dog/child/me! Hopefully it is safe with a muzzle but I'm not sure how secure they are.

Glasgowgal200 · 01/01/2024 18:39

Unfortunately the Scottish government in their wisdom have voted against banning them here!!!! Saw a article somewhere that one xl bully owner who lives in England will be moving up here because of it. Will probably be an influx of English owners moving north of the border seeing as Scottish government is so useless and soft!!!!!

They aren’t dying just need to wear a muzzle FFS and have a responsible owner

Ah sorry I see…al the people that have been killed.
Many many more have been attacked as well

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 01/01/2024 19:58

I wonder how many other dogs have been killed by out-of-control XL bulldogs. We only hear about the people they kill.

Aesthetically, they're hardly very cute. They're so ugly, I find it difficult to believe people get them for any other reason than their reputation as a dangerous breed.

They ( XL Bullies ) have killed and maimed so many dogs because they are bred from Pit Bulls.
There are many sites that show the sweet cats and pet dogs that these things have targeted.

They are a fighting breed and actually get off on attacking usually smaller and less threatening dogs and certainly cats.
