To think we're about to see an influx of XL Bully attacks after a rehoming free for all?

So I know the ban is about to come in. Plenty for it, many against it. Not trying to start a debate about that!

Yesterday someone on my FB shared a post from a woman who was offering to rehome an XL to save it before the ban came in. Someone commented with a group for rehoming XLs before it's too late and banned and I clicked on it for a look.

I was absolutely gobsmacked by the posts on the group. Hundreds of posts going back weeks of XLs needing new homes (I suppose expected) - but a VERY high and panicked volume of posts over the past few days, as the ban approaches.

Lots of pictures of dogs with !!URGENT!! rehoming requests. From people asking on behalf of their friend, because their HA just told them XLs are banned under their tenancy, for the XL they just found abandoned behind Tesco, because they bred an XL litter this year and a buyer has just dumped an 8 month old pup back with them. Lots of reasons. Incredibly sad for the dogs, none of this is of their making.

But it's the reaponses. Comments and comments from people offering to rehome an XL to save them. Highlights were 'willing to take one but must be good with children as I have a 5 year old'. 'I wish I could have both but I'm in a flat so one is my limit, please contact me'. 'I have an XL already who is brilliant with the kids, happy to add another poor baby to our pack'.

Dogs are currently being panic-rehomed all over the Country. People are offering their services to transport the XL from Devon to the family in Yorkshire who've agreed to take it. No home checks, no behavioural checks of the dogs, people aren't even meeting the dog they're agreeing to home. Lots and LOTS being shipped to Scotland in particular where there's no ban.

It's truly frightening the amount of people with young dc agreeing to blindly rehome an XL to save them. I wouldn't rehome a bloody Yorkie without meeting the dog first never mind an XL!

This is going to end in tragedy, surely?

AIBU to think the ban on privately rehoming them should have been immediate at point of announcement to prevent this madness? And also that, sadly, we're likely to be reading several tragic stories in the coming weeks about one of these panic-rehomed dogs turning?

Thank you.

I don’t think I suggested that there was a profit in it. But it clearly is relatively much cheaper to have an XL Bully PTS than any other dog, given the grant.

Out of interest, what happens if an owner can pay for euthanasia but not cremation? What would happen to the remains?

If an owner can't afford the cremation at the same time as the euthanasia then they have a month to pay for the cremation. But if they don't then pay (or if they haven't made an arrangement like a set amount a month) then the animal gets sent to be communally cremated anyway. The owners then get referred to a debt company.

We actually have ashes from animals cremated years ago that haven't been paid for or have been paid for but not collected.

Wildlife also gets pts and cremated at a cost to us.

There seems something very sad about unclaimed Ashes, but it happens in Human Crems, too.

Assuming that if owners didn’t opt for Individual cremation, the ashes of all the pets and Wildlife will be ‘Communal’.

Could they if unclaimed after a certain time not be scattered in a pretty place?

I often see Human ashes in certain beautiful places, despite it technically not being allowed .

Many people want to be buried with the ashes of their beloved animals.

Fionaville · 03/01/2024 00:23

It speaks volumes about the type of people who thought it was a good idea to buy an XL bully, in the first place. Easier to get rid, than doing what's needed.
It also says a lot about the people offering to take them in now, when they have children, without even knowing the history or behaviour checks done.

mapleriver · 03/01/2024 06:59

I'll be taking photos and reporting any XL bully I see unmuzzled from now on, hopefully the only things these rehomed mutants maul are the people stupid enough to take one on.

I don't care if some are nice, I don't want to take the risk AGAIN because morons get dogs with a propensity for violence. It's other people who pay the price when they want to play russian roulette with an ugly gargoyle of a dog they can't detach once it bites. PIC WARNING, this is what some disgusting bully did to my poor on leash whippet. This is the reality of gambling with blood sport dogs.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 03/01/2024 07:00

@oakleaffy
I think after 5 years (after phone calls, emails, letters with no reply) the unclaimed ashes get thrown away unless a staff member takes them and scatters them.

It's always sods' law that an owner will then get in touch out of the blue.

BelindaOkra · 03/01/2024 07:07

Agree OP

SomeCatFromJapan · 03/01/2024 07:16

@mapleriver That is shocking! Those bites are absolutely huge. Your poor poor dog, did she pull through and how is she doing now?
This is why I think Bully fans can't actually like animals much generally.

@mapleriver That's horrific.
Please please say your little Whippet survived that vile attack?

XL Bullies are dog attackers.

Our Whippet was targeted, I had to let her go {we were on a field, thank goodness} but the lumbering foul XL Bully was about ten times her size-
I grabbed the XL's collar and it dragged me for several metres down dome steps {the field is on a steep incline} - but my holding on to the vile thing gave my Whippet a chance to get away from where she had been cornered.

My friend's little dog I also had fled in panic and was picked up later -alive- by a street sweeper and given to the Dog Warden.

I'd already reported the incident and the Dog warden was lovely- Warden returned friend's dog to me so I didn't have to pay the kennelling fee-

Warden said it's best to ''release'' any on leash dog so they can get away... the on lead dogs I had were instinctively trying to get away, so I released them-

We can't even arm ourselves in UK..

There is a harrowing report on here of a Vet's dog {A big, gentle dog} who was killed by an XL Bully who was so ''turned on by the attack'' it's tail was wagging with pleasure during the attack.

Sincerely hope your little Whippet is ok.

Yes, I can imagine that the minute the ashes have been disposed of or scattered that someone will ask for them.

Tatumm · 03/01/2024 08:09

The legislation doesn’t go far enough. They should all be euthanised immediately.

EasternStandard · 03/01/2024 08:13

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 02/01/2024 21:01

No, it isn’t. It’s public protection.

Any fallout is the responsibility of fools who get these repulsive and dangerous dogs and who then can’t even be bothered to have them put down (with a grant FFS) let alone train and neuter them.

Agree.

HumanBurrito · 03/01/2024 08:51

I had a nosy at one of the FB groups last night. One woman offering a home said she had a three year old and a seven month old baby. Insane.

Tatumm · 03/01/2024 08:52

Like a lot of things, this has been poorly thought through and so the risk to people and other pets remain too high.

Snowflakecookie1989 · 03/01/2024 09:29

Oh god. One of my FB friends has posted that meme of the bullies on rainbow bridge 🤢

I see there are no other animal spirits crossing with the XL Bullies. Presumably they’ve savaged all the others travelling to Rainbow Land.

The bullies have a separate bridge because otherwise they would have to be muzzled.

Missingmyusername · 03/01/2024 10:22

@Snowflakecookie1989 and why does that bother you.
If you condone the euthanasia of dogs that have done no harm then that speaks volumes about you. I doubt you’ll let your ‘friend’ know how you feel either.
People like you never do, you come here to do so anonymously.

Like everything this shit show of government do, it has not been thought through. The whole situation is just heartbreaking.

Completely agree.

So much frothing on this thread it’s unreal. Sickening human behaviour, we have no humanity anymore.
Nobody cares about the human cost either, utterly grotesque.

You've said a few times that these dogs get "turned on" when they attack. Do you have any research or evidence of this? Tail wagging can also indicate aggression/fear BTW. Dog behaviour 101

SomeCatFromJapan · 03/01/2024 11:48

I've seen dogs scrapping and it's chaos and a huge noise when that happens.

The footage I've seen of XL Bully attacks looks completely different. Far quieter. The dogs look very calm and focussed in comparison to a standard dog scrap, and their tails wags. They're clearly getting on with what to them is an important job, that they've been bred for, and are enjoying doing so.
Unfortunately it's often killing a person.

It’s obvious pleasure.
Speak to those who witness XL attacks on their pet or child.

It’s certainly not “ Fear”

It’s doing what they love. A huge dopamine high

Savaging a pet or vulnerable person.

Border Collies love to herd
Greyhounds love to chase
It’s not rocket science.

Yeah, those attacks on children. Caused by pure fear.

Attacks by multiple bullies. Pure fear.
