To be worried the police will get involved. Splashed a pedestrian by accident.

I absolutely didn’t mean to do this at all but I didn’t see him or his poor dog! It was dark, no street lights, under trees, raining and he was dressed in black and the road was completely flooded as I was driving though. About a foot of water covering the road and onto the pavement.

I stopped because I hadn’t realised what had hit my car, but he had punched it with something and the window is now chipped. He was racing towards me screaming so before I could even apologise I got back in the car and drove off because I didn’t feel safe.

the flood is over the road and the pavement and I drove through at about 10 mph, possibly even less! It was very busy. And navigating with the oncoming traffic was difficult.

im a bit worried I’m going to now get a call from the police and a hefty fine. I do feel absolutely terrible especially for the dog. I realise his feet must have been soaked but it was a total accident! I’m not worried about the chip as I know I deserved it, it’ll get sorted.

Surprised by the entitlement of so many drivers blaming a pedestrian on a pathway for being sprayed by a passing car. You do realise that the driver is the only one who can cause the water to splash up. Regardless of what he was wearing you shouldn’t be driving through puddles in such a way that anyone gets wet. If I got soaked by a motorist’s driving I’d probably try and catch up with the driver too.

I remember when it was fun to splash pedestrians. Them were the days

What?! Are you drunk or just a nasty tit?

Can't avoid it round my area. All the drains are blocked and there are floods everywhere.

Of course you can avoid it. Cut your speed around pedestrians and puddles.
What you mean is, you can't be bothered because pedestrians don't matter.
🙄

This.

Not only that, you can fuck up your own car by zooming through deep puddles.

A friend got so soaked through by a passing car, she ended up buying a whole new outfit from a charity shop so she could continue with her day. She binned her knickers.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/01/2024 22:42

@Circularargument you really can't avoid it. I got splashed on my way to work tonight and the driver was going really slowly.

You shouldn’t have to avoid it. You were splashed because the driver wasn’t going slow enough. There’s a bus stop on my way home that regularly floods and I’ve never splashed anyone because unlike many drivers I slow right down.

NickyT64 · 01/01/2024 23:29

Am I missing something? Is it a criminal act worthy of getting the police involved? There’s been enough press recently on police unable to attend burglaries so how on earth could you justify having to attend cases of wet pedestrians???!!!! Why on earth are you worried? I’d be reporting the vandalism to your car and the threatening behaviour to a woman out on her own in the dark.

Klcak · 01/01/2024 23:33

Well, if the police come (unlikely) you can report him for damaging your car. Take photos.

You can tell them that neither him nor the dog had anything lighting them up and that you could not see them. Dogs should have waterproof lights on them in dark rainy unlit places.

Runningandtired · 01/01/2024 23:41

Someone did this to me the other day with my 4 kids in Broad daylight. I shouted in shock. But then got on with my day. If anyone's gets into trouble it would be him. But you would obviously have to give your side of the story

Yeah do that. "I didn't see this man on the pavement officer and might have hit him with my car and he shouted at me". Golden.

NickyT64 · 02/01/2024 00:00

Tacotortoise - it may have been dark but at no point did the OP say it was so dark she couldn’t see where she was going. She was on the road, pedestrian on pavement. She didn’t nearly hit him.

SkySecret · 02/01/2024 00:04

I doubt they’ll care at all, and if he has no video footage then what can they possibly do?

We submitted dashcam footage of someone doing this on purpose on a wide road, did it twice within a few minutes, swerving into puddles to splash pedestrians. Never heard anything back on it so assume they got away with it. Made me rage watching it. So deliberate and the poor pedestrians were drenched head to toe.

kittensinthekitchen · 02/01/2024 00:41

So he was on the pavement? You splashed him so he hit your car, on the rear driver side? So you were driving on the wrong side of the road?

DragonFly98 · 02/01/2024 00:52

It's 3 points so hopefully they didn't get your reg.

Thank you @ChaniceKobolowski - most drivers are not so thoughtful. As evidenced on this thread, most drivers seem to despise pedestrians and regard them as second-class citizens on the road.

My exhusband has a live arrest warrant ( issued in September) for contempt of court. When arrested he will serve 28 days in prison. He has yet to be arrested. He has been in and out of major airports without being stopped. The police are not interested in him. They are not going to be remotely interested in you Op.

No you dont deserve it. You made a mistake which understandably angry but there is no justification for his dealing with it by damaging your car!

Thehappygardener · 02/01/2024 11:56

Is there any possibility that you hit his dog? And am
v sorry if this has already been covered in your answers.

They will be interested in him but without intelligence or an officer seeing him they aren’t going to knock on every door in the country. The airport staff have failed to perform the necessary procedures if he’s got in and out of the country. The police don’t check passports. Plus it’s completely different teams that would deal with the different jobs.

fliptopbin · 02/01/2024 15:51

Someone I know went to the police station in York to complain about being splashed and was laughed out of the room
The policeman said that if you live in a city that is notorious for floods, getting splashed occasionally is an occupational hazard!

Nurse08 · 21/01/2024 11:09

No you did not deserve it. What pedestrian did is deliberate criminal damage.
U were not going fast and pedestrian could have predicted what would happen and acted accordingly ie kept out the way, as I would have done.
