To expect next day delivery if I've paid extra for next day delivery?

I'm so pissed off. I ordered two items yesterday and paid £5.99 for next day delivery rather than £2.99 for standard delivery, because I want to use the items tonight. Had a message from Evri about an hour ago saying my package was with the driver and would be delivered in the next two hours. Had a second message a few minutes later saying it had been delayed and wouldn't be delivered today after all.

I know it's a trivial thing really, but I'm so disappointed. And just sick to death of shoddy service and being robbed blind and treated like crap. It's put a real dampener on NYE. AIBU? My family thinks I'm turning into a grumpy old woman.

If you paid for it you should receive it ! , they owe you a refund on the delivery fee .

HeddaGarbled · 31/12/2023 15:47

Well, I can see it’s annoying, but it is a busy time of year for the delivery companies, isn’t it? And sometimes, things just go wrong.

I think you’ve been lulled into an expectation of instant gratification by the fact that most of the time you actually can order and receive something so last minute.

I expect you’ll be able to get your extra delivery costs back if you ask.

DustyLee123 · 31/12/2023 15:55

Nothing you can do other than request the difference back.

stepintochristmas1 · 31/12/2023 16:05

I'm waiting for delivery of a few things but obviously things are not running as normal this week . It is what it is .

Sirzy · 31/12/2023 16:07

Even at normal times of year I wouldn’t order something with next day delivery expecting it to come on a Sunday!

Persephonegoddess · 31/12/2023 16:07

You are correct to be annoyed, they should refund the whole fee as you may have chosen a different purchase if you had known it would not be delivered

modgepodge · 31/12/2023 16:10

You should be able to get a refund on the delivery fee if it is late and you still want it (I had this with Clark’s). Or, if the item is no use to you after today, you should be able to get a complete refund incl delivery if you return it, as they missed their delivery window.

it is annoying but there’s not a lot you can do about it now.

Surely they shouldn't offer the service - and charge a premium for it - if it isn't reasonable to expect it?

I ordered two things yesterday afternoon for delivery today; both have arrived.

OP - whenever this has happened to me, the store normally refund the delivery charge.

IKnowYouBetterThanThat · 31/12/2023 16:24

Well the company you purchased from have, presumably, paid Evri for the premium service and then Evri have not provided it so it's on them really.

I'm assuming the driver realised he had too many packages on his van and wasn't going to get them all done so just cancelled some. Which is out of the control of the original company.

I had a parcel that wasn't delivered before Christmas due to "access issues at the property" which was a lie and apparently what they say when they've run out of time and want to go home (and tbf I don't really blame the individual drivers as they are expected to work at the speed of Santa himself!)

I would ask for a refund of the difference in postage cost and let the company take it up with Evri if they can be bothered.

Very annoying though and you are right - it would be more realistic for them to just not offer next day delivery at busy times of year when there's a high risk of it not happening.

yumyum33 · 31/12/2023 16:33

Just the word Evri makes me shudder. I no longer order from anyone who uses them. I can't imagine you'll get your parcel on NYE either.

yumyum33 · 31/12/2023 16:34

NY Day, I meant.

MrsJimmyPerez · 31/12/2023 16:36

I think you were a bit daft to rely so fully on something arriving on New Year's Eve, especially as it's a Sunday. The couple of times I've paid for next day delivery and delivery has been delayed, the companies have fully refunded my delivery charge, so I scored for a free delivery.

I find delivery companies are great 95% of the time eg. I ordered some stuff from Argos at 11am today, paid £6 for same day delivery and it was here at 3pm.

Bladwdoda · 31/12/2023 16:41

I wouldn’t expect next day delivery to be reliable this time of year. You could ask for delivery costs part refunded, but I think it was unrealistic to think it would be 100% guaranteed to arrive.

sesquipedalian · 31/12/2023 16:41

I don’t think companies should advertise next day delivery if they can’t accomplish it. Before Christmas, one daughter left a train ticket at another daughter’s house. Daughter sent it guaranteed by one o’clock next day delivery with Royal Mail and it didn’t arrive, so more tickets had to be bought. I would have paid to have the tickets couriered had we known - foolishly, we thought Royal Mail would actually be reliable. And being able to make a claim is no consolation.

Whaleandsnail6 · 31/12/2023 17:14

Yanbu to expect what you have paid for.

I'm amazed that people think you shouldnt expect the service you were offered and paid for to be fulfilled just because of the time of year. If its going to be an issue that its sunday and bank holiday weekend, the next day service shouldnt be offered.

Id cancel the item and want a full refund including delivery. How frustrating for you!

OP, MN is full of people who think businesses are doing us a favour by existing, rather than actually making money out of providing a service. Heaven forbid that a company should actually provide the service or item it is being paid for!

If you pay for something, you should get it.

Sadly, Evri are rubbish and have form for this. It's not the seller's fault and the driver, in fairness, probably had too much to deliver today but this has happened to me when it wasn't a busy time of year as well.

You should definitely get a refund of the premium delivery charge - especially as I assume you'll have to wait until Tuesday now.

Vans break down
Drivers get the shits
A tree falls across the road
Somewhere floods.

Things like this can and do happen.
