Message from the police on Christmas eve

I got a voicemail from my local police force on Christmas Eve. The message was basically that she wasn’t going to say what it was about in case someone else was listening, she’d try again later that day and to look out for an unknown number and failing that get in touch “after the Christmas period” that she just wanted “a chat” and it was “nothing to worry about”.

Ive checked and the number was definitely the local police force and they haven’t tried to call since the message was left (they’d tried one minute before leaving the message).

I was arrested and released without charge at the beginning of December so presumably it had something to do with that. But why would they be getting in touch 3 weeks after the fact and aibu to think we are now past “the Christmas period” and they should have contacted me by now?

My experience of the police getting back to you is that you will wait months. You can't get them as their phones are always on answer only so can't even leave a message. Useless.

Maybe calling to apologise for wrongly arresting you or perhaps you left something behind.

MumblesParty · 31/12/2023 10:22

Why don’t you ring and find out?

Louisa4987 · 31/12/2023 10:27

Call in on 101 and ask. Someone should be able to give you a rough idea.

bookfit24 · 31/12/2023 10:27

If she said it’s nothing to worry about I’d not worry. It could be signposting you to services (particularly if it was a d&d), maybe an item has been found in the station and she’s checking if it’s yours, or maybe something to do with paperwork.

Police cane to my house a couple if times 18 months ago, pretty sure I know why but never returned, so much bigger fish to fry

is that not the kind of thing a sensible person would follow up?

SquirrelySponges · 31/12/2023 10:51

As most other posters have said if the officer is happy to leave it until after Christmas it sounds like something you dont need to worry about and could be checking something or some admin thing.

Also don't worry about what number called you. Police often either use withheld numbers or dummy numbers to ensure confidentiality and so that people don't call them back. The local police number doesn't really exist anymore since the 101 system x

Hi, I'm in public service and we're back on Jan 2nd.

Probably pissed off that they had to release you without charge so thought they would make you worry and be anxious over Christmas by leaving a message on Christmas Eve.

Well in that case, the caller dropped the ball a bit by saying “Nothing to worry about”, didn’t she?

chitofftheshovel · 31/12/2023 12:11

delassalle I don’t think for a minute she was trying to shit me up and ruin the festive period

Call and ask or do it on line. Did you have a reference

Hanlonsamazer · 31/12/2023 12:32

Them saying “it’s nothing to worry about” means absolutely nothing. It’s one of the lines in their script because they’re too simple to ad lib like normal people.

OP, call 101 or do an online form. They might help and will give you contact details for the officer so you can email them for a similarly incoherent response.

StockpotSoup · 31/12/2023 12:46

OP, did they retain any property at the time? It’s possible they’re looking to return it.

TheWickerWoman · 31/12/2023 13:12

Hello Op.

I was visited by the police right before Christmas a few years ago. They said they wanted to interview me and it eventually ended with a caution (not a charge)

They rang me on Xmas Eve and said they wasn’t going to do anything until the new year and to enjoy my Christmas. Then, about half way through January I went to see them (I had to keep chasing them) and had a caution (I bought magic mushrooms online). The police were lovely and they did say that they only deal with more serious crime over the Xmas period.

I know you said you were released without charge etc but they might have just been calling you to tie up loose ends or advise you of some sort of outcome.
