What is this can’t sleep, constant wees thing?!

Sorry that’s such a strange title but no idea what else to call it and also sorry it’s not an aibu by any stretch of the imagination but I need to know of this happens to anyone else and what it is!

Occasionally I have a night where I just constantly need to wee and it keeps me awake all night. It’s been happening since I was a child and my mum used to tell me I’d ‘caught a chill’ but I’ve never heard anyone else saying they have suffered from this, although I think it does happen when it’s cold. But how can that make me need constant wees? It’s not little wees either but proper ones (I’m sorry for all the ‘wee’ details)z. I’ve not had anything to drink other than a small mug of hot water at 7pm so it’s not because I’ve been drinking a lot either. Why does this happen to me? I just want to sleep!

There's a correlation between covid and overactive bladder (some studies suggest it triples the risk) but it's an area that's not been much researched)

Other than waiting for it to go away all by itself, the recommended steps are pelvic floor exercises and bladder training. Also, weight loss (if overweight), deceasing caffeine and paying attention to drinking patterns and seeing if there are other triggers and avoiding the. There are drugs, but they're often no more effective than lifestyle measures.

Interesting that a pp mentioned there can be an interplay with cardiac health - covid being known to cause cardiovascular issues (not suggesting that's the case for you, OP, just musing if that's something that researchers might get round to looking at one day)

As you say you've had a tendency for this from childhood, perhaps (speculating wildly) that means something about your body means it doesn't need much of a "nudge" to show this as symptom after a viral infection (whatever the virus). Might be worth thinking back as to whether there is a personal correlation between when it happens and whether you've been unwell just beforehand

@JingleSnowmanTree “stop being a carby twat” is my new mantra for 2024!!

Mine is also diabetes related. The body’s way of trying to get rid of the sugar it can’t process. Last few nights have been horrendous for me but all my own fault for eating stuff I shouldn’t. Pass me the celery…

Thanks for the replies to this.
I've been having this issue recently, except the urge to wee wakes me very early and then I can't get back to sleep.
I didn't think about my recent (since I gave up alcohol) over-consumption of sugar in the evening, but that might well have something to do with it, as well as peri, the gift that keeps on fucking giving. Will try knocking the chocolate before bed on the head and see if that helps any. And if not, I'll be asking my gyno for Vagifem.

Following with interest as I get this too. I do a huge pee and think surely that's me now then 20 mins later I'm needing again. It seems random to me and is infrequent enough that I'd struggle to identify a pattern relating to carbs or sugar or time of the month.

AtLeastHalfRelieved · 01/01/2024 21:34

This happens to me too! Not often, maybe 2/3 times a year, and seemingly at random. Never managed to pin down a trigger or predict it successfully.

Devilsmommy · 01/01/2024 21:43

Although it sounds wrong, dehydration can make you need to wee more frequently.

@SundayFundayz it's so bloody tedious though isn't it.

i went out to friends for a quick NYD drink at 4:15. I've only just walked home (12:30). They invited me to stay for dinner, I did, it was a pasta dish. So nice, but so bad! Played games & ate too much! Drank too much.

i did go for a walk today though. Trying to get back into the habit!!

you're welcome to share the 'Carby Twat' mantra!! But I wish you all the best for not needing it!!
