To be concerned about DS?

Not sure what to think of this. We went out for lunch on Wednesday to the pub, all ate different meals. DS (6) had fish and chips. 6 hours later he had a bowl of pasta, most of a kiwi which he normally loves, but said that it was too ripe and left a quarter of, and then refused Yule log. Said 10 minutes later he felt poorly when watching TV. Tried for a poo but nothing. Went to sleep and half an hour later was sick in his bed, then much more in the toilet. Went back to bed very happily, slept soundly all night and was as right as rain the next day. Put it down to something he ate, query kiwi allergy. Played in close proximity to his brother, building Lego with heads together all day. At 5pm said he was starving, but we didn't manage to get dinner on the table until 5.45pm by which time he was a bit nauseous so didn't eat the chicken, but did eat a bowl of rice and a banana. Put nausea down to hunger, felt better after dinner. Slept well.

Friday he had a slightly reduced appetite but generally normally playing, kicking balls in the garden etc. Was more sleepy than usual in the afternoon. Pizza for tea with veg including a Brussels sprout (cooked fresh, not leftovers). Went to bed happily and slept all night.

Saturday morning he was really bloated with a rock hard stomach and had a loose poo before we went out to parkrun where he ran 5k. Really eggy farts all morning. Few loose poos during the day, 2 mini accidents in pants. Generally more quiet and withdrawn than usual, but still playing with his brother. Rock hard stomach all day, very unusual for him. Pain just below ribcage at about 4pm, just after eating a Malteaser. Wasn't particularly interested in food but did have a wrap with a few crisps and grapes for lunch. Couldn't manage his Chomp bar from selection box. Watched the Cebeebies panto before tea and was giggling away to it. Said he felt really really tired, usual for him at that time. Sat down for tea at 5.45pm, took one mouthful of breaded chicken and dashed to the toilet, lots of water came up (his 3pm cup of water I presume). Wanted to go back to the dinner table and finish his tea but I said it probably wasn't a good idea. Now sitting on the sofa feeling much much better, still not quite normal though. Stomach feels much softer and apparently doesn't hurt any more.

Noone else in the house is ill. Everyone feels normal despite being in close proximity to him all week (off school and work).

I just don't know what to think, was it food poisoning from the pub? Kiwi allergy? He hadn't had a poo since Tuesday until this morning when it was diarrhoea, perhaps he's constipated? Would that cause vomiting 72 hours after the last bout of sickness? He's normally a regular once a day kind of guy.

Any thoughts? Grateful for your help, am concerned about him.

I'd be worried about a bowel obstruction. You can get over flow when you are badly constipated / have an obstruction

Me too.

I would ring 111.

mikado1 · 30/12/2023 18:39

Constipation. Going through the same here. You can see from what he's eaten, like my dc these last days, he hasn't had fruit/veg/fibre and maybe not much water?

We have started a liquid laxative but doesn't seem to be doing much. It's awful to see them like this.

Would you? 🤔 chemist told us v common at moment and just take the laxative. That leaflet says contact doc after 3/4 days if no improvement.

Parfortheparsnip · 30/12/2023 18:46

Re the kiwi - I believe they contain something that for a lot of people works as a fairly instant laxative. However that may be a bit of a red herring here. Like others on the thread I think I would contact 111 and get him checked out as he's only 6 and the symptoms sound strange. I also have a DS the same age and I think I would call 111.

Originalgrumpyone · 30/12/2023 18:47

I said it was bedtime and he said "but I haven't had any food yet!" He's now eating toast at the table... We're overseas (same timezone though) and don't have 111, but do you think he needs medical attention in the next day or so?

Pineapplewaves · 30/12/2023 18:48

You said he loves kiwis - if he's eaten them before with no issues then it's unlikely to be a kiwi allergy.

Sounds like he's picked up some kind of stomach bug and if he's managing to keep some food down now it sounds like he's on the mend.

Or the vomiting could be down to eating too much and the hard stomach/poo due to lack of fibre from eating too many carbs. Can you get some fruit into him, kiwis are actually good for constipation but he might not fancy one now.

My whole family are very bloated and gassy at the moment, we've all eaten far too much and of the wrong food types. The fruit bowls haven't been touched for days.

Nothing wrong with calling 111 for advice if you are worried.

Parfortheparsnip · 30/12/2023 18:49

Didn't realise you were overseas. I would try giving plenty of fluids and mild food if he wants it like rice or toast, and if he is still randomly throwing up tomorrow and hasn't had a proper bowel movement, I would get him seen by a dr.

For a child with constipation so bad that they can’t keep down food yes.

FluffyDiplodocus · 30/12/2023 18:50

It doesn’t sound like a kiwi allergy to me, my DS is allergic to them and the responses are totally different and very immediate.

Ok. No vomiting here, just some small meals going down but I think it's more lack of appetite from feeling so rotten rather than not able to keep food down iyswim. My plan was to contact doc tomorrow..

Vettrianofan · 30/12/2023 19:25

A good dose of lactulose would sort him out. Sounds like classic constipation symptoms.

Iwishiwasasilentnight · 30/12/2023 19:40

Have a look on the eric website.

Originalgrumpyone · 30/12/2023 19:53

Thanks everyone. It has been a strange few days for him. He's fast asleep now and seemed much more perky this evening after his toast with a much softer tummy. Did several stinky farts while we were reading together. I'll see what he's like tomorrow, if the same then will get some medical attention. I strongly suspect constipation now and will try and get more fruit into him tomorrow, and will hold off on chocolate too as he doesn't usually eat much and we've let him have free reign recently. He's not gone mad though (unlike his mother, diet starts soon...) and even refused one today. I said he likes kiwis, they're really expensive and so he's maybe had 3 in the last year, the ones I bought recently were a Christmas treat!

Really appreciate the replies, thanks. Hope your little one feels better too @mikado1

Thank you! We had success x2 before bed. Hopefully that's the worst of it behind us. It was dreadfully painful, poor thing. I will continue to keep up all the efforts. Hope your lo feels better tomorrow.

Posypointshoes · 31/12/2023 01:17

if you can get your hands on prune juice that will really help get things moving if it’s constipation

DNLove · 31/12/2023 01:22

I ate Brussels sprouts over Christmas, not something I'd normally eat and it flared terrible IBS. Sprouts create awful gas. Like the wind caused a sensation of constipation but when I went it was very loose.
I'd keep him on a basic diet for couple of days and of nothing improves get him to doctor.

Thementalloadisreal · 31/12/2023 01:23

Maybe the fish wasn’t good and he’s got a lingering “something you ate” tummy bug, they can take a while to shift the bacteria and his body might be trying to eject it all still

Originalgrumpyone · 31/12/2023 07:09

Because the rest of us are fine I'm thinking it might have been the fish too. He woke up 15 minutes ago and said he didn't feel well, was a bit sick and has gone back to bed for a nap :-( so no better here I'm afraid.

OP posts:
WaitingfortheTardis · 31/12/2023 07:16

Sounds like a stomach bug really, it's quite common for others in the house not to catch them. If it was food poisoning I'd expect the sickness and diarrhoea to be more prominent. Combined with the tiredness of Christmas it might just not quite be leaving as quickly as it might otherwise. I think I would see a doctor if he isn't better soon though as it's always better to be on the safe side. Poor thing, the main thing will be keeping him drinking plenty so he doesn't get dehydrated l.

Nogodsnomasters · 29/02/2024 09:36

Op what happened in the end? I'm in a similar boat here with my ds9

Originalgrumpyone · 29/02/2024 15:02

It lasted a couple more days of being under the weather, reduced appetite but drinking water then suddenly he perked up significantly about mid afternoon one day and was totally back to normal. Normal appetite, normal bowel movements, no more sick etc. I'm not sure what it was really, constipation or a bug but noone else caught it if so. Hope your DS feels better soon.

Thank you very much for getting back to me. Did you continue with the laxatives until he felt better?

Originalgrumpyone · 29/02/2024 17:09

We didn't use any specific laxatives, just upped the fibre if he felt like it. Pears and prunes have always worked wonders for him!

Nogodsnomasters · 29/02/2024 17:26

Ah sorry I thought I read somewhere that you'd tried a laxative.
