To think we have to be let in??

I am currently in Australia visiting a friend. We have travelled from Brisbane towards Sydney for the last few days. We are spending New Year’s Eve in a theme park next to the harbour bridge to watch the fireworks. We bought the tickets ages ago.

My friend and I, who have travelled together, didn’t bring our passports with us to sydney, just our drivers licenses.

We have just received an email from said theme park, saying that they ID on entry and do not accept foreign driving licenses as a valid form of ID. Only passports and Australian licenses. This was not made clear when we bought.

So now, we are panicking. We spent £120 on these event tickets and now we probably won’t even be let in.
NSW government guidance says any country license can be accepted as ID, so they’re not following this.

What can we do?? It’s tomorrow and we don’t have time to get our passports.

Another one here who thinks that this relates to proof of age. If you’re old (ie 30s or above 😂) they might not be so fussed. And until relatively recently they were a British colony, although don’t mention that to them as it probably won’t go down well. But I’d have thought that a British drivers licence should carry more weight than other countries.

Are you for real? No, we don't give Poms more leeway with their British drivers licenses than we do other countries. OP would look like a right dick telling them that as Australia is a former colony she should be allowed in.

OP I'm another one who thinks you don't have a shitshow of being allowed in. They will be checking ID.

honeysuckleweeks · 30/12/2023 09:53

Oh that's brilliant pp. Do you know anyone OP?. Borrow their ID if they are Australian and look well over 18 they will not be stopped. Hand it back when you get in. Best I can think of. It is an amazing spot for New Years so I hope you get in. If not go for Vivid in January if you are still around Sydney.

Vivid isn't in January!

Ya think?

Youremylobster87 · 30/12/2023 10:02

I would just turn up and play stupid, you didn't realise, you travelled all this way....be very polite and smile and hope they let you in. Fingers crossed.

Luna park? Nah they won’t let you in. Australia is strangely strict.

"Australia is strangely strict."

^^ In a nutshell, but it's hard to believe until you've experienced it first hand.

It's also hard to believe quite what a long long long drive it is between most of the State capitals, so it's not just a case of nipping back up the road to Brisbane for the documents.

I have no solution to offer but good luck OP.

Mangotango39 · 30/12/2023 10:03

You can tell who doesn't live in aus unfortunately.......

They are very strict , when I first moved , they would never accept our driving licences anywhere (over 5 years ago!) and we always carried our passports until we got licences.

I am 30 and still get ID'd here.

The website is pretty clear cut with capitals so I don't think they'll accept excuses , might even be an insurance thing. If you opt-out now, you have a chance of selling the tickets and finding alternative plans. If you chance it, you'll be unlikely to sell the tickets and be stuck on alternatives IMO.

OneTC · 30/12/2023 10:05

If you've got an Australian passport weren't you supposed to use that on entry to Australia? How did you get in with just a British one. Did you get a visa?

OneTC · 30/12/2023 10:06

Sorry you left it in Brisbane I just re-read

I know I'm an idiot it's June. It's past my bedtime. Sorry OP. Ignore the vivid comment. But def come back for it in June - though it is ridiculously crowded.

clara778 · 30/12/2023 10:09

Can you go in person today and ask?

I don't think you will get in, but I would go and ask ( with printed copy of passport) I had to do that at a hotel once. She accepted it, but she really wasn't happy.

Literally.
Imagine if the members of security were aborginal. It would be highly offensive for us to stamp our feet at the rules because we are British (however silly the rules!)

My point is that she should have double checked the website.

completely unhelpful

Taking this as a piece of piss. "recently". 😂😂😂

Flatandhappy · 30/12/2023 10:11

I love the people saying rock up and give it a go from the other side of the world! Grow a pair and make a fuss and they will let you in - at Luna Park on NYE you are more likely to have security called to remove you if you make a fuss, keep making a fuss and it will be the police. I live in Sydney, I am not joking. They are not IDing people for age, they are IDing against tickets bought as the tickets are probably non-transferrable and there will be plenty of fakes out there. It is an absolute shit and you have my every sympathy but this might have to be a harsh lesson learnt.

Tulipvase · 30/12/2023 10:12

As others have said, assuming you have a valid ticket, are they going to be IDing obviously old enough woman? Assuming you are of course. Making everyone carry their passport all the time seems like a bad idea to me.

They are not making everyone carry their passports all the time , only those with non Australian licences.

Definitely wouldn't advise making a fuss, but is there any harm in turning up and trying? Could show the licence, booking confirmation and all that and plead, and accept it if they say no? It's not as if OP has anywhere else to be...

So most tourists then?

If you had checked the Luna Park website before you left Brisbane you would have seen that they don't accept foreign drivers licences and only passports are acceptable for international visitors.

Thank you Captain Hindsight, you've saved the day!

clara778 · 30/12/2023 10:17

@Tulipvase Well yes, they wouldn't know a genuine Irish/spanish/French driving licence would they?
Passports are much harder to fake.

Sometimes venues have stricter rules than the government websites. Unfortunately I think you will be turned away as you will be trying to enter without proper documents.

DH’s parents went to a concert in America a couple of years ago. Majority of attendees were over 40.
When they tried to buy a beer and a wine they were asked for Id. The venue had decided to make a rule that Everyone must have Id to purchase regardless of age. Inlaws hadn’t thought to check the venue website.
They hadn’t taken their passports to it so were refused despite being over 70 and well over any age restriction there.

When I was in the states a bunch of 60+ year old Brits were turned away from a bar as they had no ID. They scanned and took a photo of everyone's ID as they went in. I'm assuming so if any incidents they knew who was in the bar. Some places are very strict.

Greenpolkadot · 30/12/2023 10:18

Nothing you can do about except to make other plans

Tulipvase · 30/12/2023 10:15

Yes?
a lot of places scan passport/aus licence on arrival and can't do this with international licences. So it can be insurance purposes.

We got id at every bar in the states, including my 62 year old (at the time) dad who made a really shit joke about looking young every damn time 🤣

I bet you voted for Brexit and think that the UK is now being treated unfairly by the EU! Why on earth should a British licence be treated any differently?!
