Standing ovations becoming common place

Every time I go to the theatre now the audience give a standing ovation. This used to be the highest tribute, for exceptional acting or writing. AIBU to think they're a bit meaningless now and it's a shame there's no way of recognising an extraordinary theatre event anymore?

I'm a regular theatre goer and I agree. I'm not really one for standing ovations unless I'm really blown away so I mostly don't join in.

Seems to me a trend alongside the extra word (language inflation I call it)- you cannot just be sorry nowadays, for example, but very sorry, or if someone dies, sincere condolences.

Hmmm, I haven't noticed this as the theatres I go to.

I go 12-15 times a year and I see standing ovations at maybe a third of shows I go to.

There definitely wasn't one for 'Charlie & The Chocolate Factory' or 'Heathers' but there was for 'Betty - A Kind of Musical'. However, the last one had the magnificent Maxine Peake in it so it's hardly surprising.

I go to the theatre every month or so, and have seen standing ovations at some of the places I’ve been to but not everywhere. E.g. I went to see Dear England at the National and that got a a huge standing ovation (which I 100% agree with - it was fantastic and so memorable). For other things I’ve seen, they haven’t received one. It doesn’t mean those shows are less high quality - it could be that they’re less high-energy or that people feel uncomfortable standing up to show their full appreciation, or perhaps that people haven’t been grabbed by those shows.

I did at a gig recently but it was an Embrace comeback and it was absolutely brilliant so deserved one

I saw the David Tennant Macbeth a couple of weeks ago and was very surprised that there wasn't one because it was absolutely fantastic and he, in particular, was spectacular.

I blame Britains Got Talent , anyone who isn't absolutely dire gets a standing ovation.
