Valentine cards & Easter eggs already

Went to Sainsburys on Wednesday & Valentines cards were on display. Went to the Co-op last night & the lady said the Easter eggs were out the back ready to go on display. It's just business & we have a choice whether or not to buy.
Just a rant really as I find it so irritating, don't know why.
Just seems like we haven't even finished the Xmas/New Year holidays yet & they're already pushing the next thing down our throats!

The local shop was selling Cadbury's creme eggs on boxing day.

It's just commercialism, you can ignore it

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 29/12/2023 15:00

Buy it or don't buy it. Your choice. Valentines day has a lead of about 6 weeks so makes sense that retailers want to get it out there quickly. Easter, well, whatever really. It's just chocolate eggs.

megletthesecond · 29/12/2023 15:00

It's always been like it. They factories must start producing the mini and creme eggs at the start of December.

Midlifecryses · 29/12/2023 15:37

I think the way we shop has changed. We have moved away from buying things as we need them to a mire planning ahead way of shopping. Particularly for people on tight budgets or with large families/lots to buy for. Spreading the cost over a couple of pay days is easier for some. Shops just react to that.

there is undoubtedly an element of advertising and “shoving it down our throats” driving markets too but I think it a chicken and egg situation

MadeOfAllWork · 29/12/2023 15:47

Yes. I remember seeing them putting Easter eggs out on Christmas Eve in Woolworths. So that tells you how long ago it was.

SutWytTi · 29/12/2023 15:50

It has been this way for a long time. Just ignore it, what else can you do?

Sparklesocks · 29/12/2023 15:50

💰

Needmorelego · 29/12/2023 15:51

You don't have to buy them. You can just ignore them.
I bought some creme eggs a week before Christmas - because I like them. They're just chocolate bars in a different shape. That's the thing - people DO buy them. If they didn't sell retailers wouldn't use up precious shelf space on them. Don't like it, don't buy it. Simple.

tescocreditcard · 29/12/2023 15:59

WhateverMate · 29/12/2023 16:10

They're just sitting on shelves.

No-one's pushing them down our throats.

PurpleOrchid42 · 29/12/2023 16:12

But who the feck is going to buy a valentines card 2 months in advance? Absolutely bizarre.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 29/12/2023 16:13

To a certain extent they are just filling the gaps left by Christmas, the seasonal aisle(s). Nothing out yet here but the aisle in our smaller branch is piled high with champagne etc for Sunday

Needmorelego · 29/12/2023 16:16

@PurpleOrchid42 I have often found with seasonal products if I don't buy something when I see it - it will often sell out. Retailers are actually selling less seasonal products these days. If stock sells out it frequently isn't replaced with more the same. "When It's Gone It's Gone" is a big retail phrase these days.
If I see a valentine card that I really really like - then yes I might buy it 6 weeks ahead of time.

Needmorelego · 29/12/2023 16:19

@anothernamechangeagainsndagain exactly. The concept of January sales - ie selling off the leftovers has pretty much gone out of style because the shops actually sell out of the Christmas stock before Christmas (which is actually what they want).
That's why the "sale" aisle is full of large filler products - big giant plastic storage boxes etc and the Easter Eggs.

Anybody over 12 buying one at all is a bit bizarre TBH.

kitsuneghost · 29/12/2023 17:18

I think people buy Easter eggs just to eat themselves. So earlier they go on, the more they sell.

Indeed.

I always wait until 13th before I buy mine 😀No point wasting £3.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 29/12/2023 17:41

There were cadburys mini eggs in the seasonal aisle in my local supermarket with all the Christmas chocolates. I bought some 🙊 I love mini eggs
