Having just watched a segment on BBC breakfast when they were talking about karaoke.

The famous New Year song is called Auld Lang SYNE as in road sign, cosine, sign your name, a sign of the times and not Auld Lang ZYNE.

Thank you.

Tell me you're not Scottish without telling me...

Maxus · 29/12/2023 08:40

Thanks but I will continue singing it my way

Rabbie will be burling in his grave

Lovely. As long as you're happy with all of Scotland either rolling their eyes at you, or laughing.

I mean, we know that some people have issues with rolling their Rs or sticking an R where it doesn't belong, like rhyming Hannah with spanner. But SIGN is a word which is not in that category and there is no earthly reason why anyone would think it was pronounced ZYNE.

I though BbC presenters were schooled in how to pronounce correctly

Funnily enough the whole of Scotland won't be in my living room when we sing it. And I don't care. This is how we sing it so and we are not changing to make you happy 😠

Do you think that anyone cares what “all of Scotland” thinks? 😂

You should also be aware you are not one homogeneous mass, and that many Scottish people are not quite as uptight as you.

Exactly
Who cares about the whole of Scotland's views on pronunciation

quisensoucie · 29/12/2023 08:58

Also, there are a range of accents and pronunciations across Scotland, so maybe, god forbid, a true Scot may sing it 'incorrectly'
No hope for the Sassenachs!

Charlize43 · 29/12/2023 09:10

In my experience, most people are so drunk by the time it comes around to singing it that it doesn't even remotely resemble that...

Torganer · 29/12/2023 09:21

Well my Scottish family won’t be laughing at anyone singing it, however they pronounce the words. But we don’t tend to laugh at people’s accents in general.

aSwarmOfMidgies · 29/12/2023 09:29

You can say it how you like

But please don't sing " for the sake of ...."

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 29/12/2023 09:34

This is news to people?

LangMayYerLumReek2024 · 29/12/2023 09:36

American movies are to blame

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2023 09:40

My ILs pronounce accelerate with a z sound in the middle. They also voted against Breggsit.

They probably sing Zyne. Thankfully, I've never spent NY with them.
