Two Xmas is a better term. More expressive.

What I meant to say was rather than using gooch week which doesn’t mean anything how about using “twixmas” as it is more expressive.

Gooch is a bloody horrible word.

It's Twixmas here.

Why the need for new words, it's just Christmas. Christmas is a season

No new words would be sad. Our ability to be creative, descriptive, witty etc is one of the things I love most about language. Language allows us to be precise or whimsical or amusing or damning or hopeful or any number of things. If Christmas is just a season and needs only one word, should we also get rid of Yule, Saturnalia, Advent, Candlemas, Twelfth Night, Boxing Day and so on?

Sparrow7 · 29/12/2023 10:34

I agree

WhatNoRaisins · 29/12/2023 11:39

I'm not a fan of inventing new words to replace perfectly good old ones. I think it's more.fun to come up with a new thing and then a witty expression.

No, me either.

What is the term you use for the time between Christmas and New Year?

I have never had one, but often needed one so have been pleased to be introduced to Twixmas in the last few years.

WhatNoRaisins · 29/12/2023 12:25

Just Christmas, that term still makes sense to me

Avacardo2023 · 29/12/2023 13:51

It's Twixmas here too (which makes sense as I've eaten a lot of them, other chocolate bars and cheese).

LlynTegid · 29/12/2023 13:55

@AliceOlive felt more like a Friday to me.

Christmas makes perfect sense to cover the season, but I need some specifics sometimes. Like inviting my in-laws for dinner. I can't invite them for "Christmas", they might stay for a month. Can you imagine?

FUPAgirl · 29/12/2023 14:08

I agree op

It does seem different at Christmas depending on the day of the week it falls. Perhaps it is when the school holiday is, or when people are not at work. Remember the threads about children still being at school until the 22nd, or moans about not returning to school until the 8th.

A Monday Christmas in a way means a week with few people at work, a midweek one means two weeks with only limited number of days.

This! I was telling a friend this exact explanation of why this year the PTO seemed so reduced and that's why!

PriOn1 · 29/12/2023 07:43

Spare a thought for those in countries where you don’t get a day off if the bank holiday falls on a weekend. At least they’ll have had a proper break this Christmas.

Edited

Not just those in other countries. I only get Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day off. So in 2024 I shall have just 3 days off (Wednesday, Thursday and the following Wednesday). 4 whole days in a row off, followed by another 3 days this weekend is bloody bliss.

Beautiful3 · 29/12/2023 15:58

My dad actually didn't enjoy Christmas because it fell on a Monday! He said, what a shame, it didn't feel like christmas. It will be better when it's on the weekend again. I personally think it feels the same no matter which day its on!

RegimentalSturgeon · 29/12/2023 16:02

What is the term you use for the time between Christmas and New Year?

I have heard it called “The perineum of the year”, which I think sums it up neatly. Wish I could claim credit for that one…

lesdeluges · 29/12/2023 16:38

Twixmas is The Dead Zone

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/12/2023 16:49

Ergh, I thought Chrimbo Limbo was the ultimate in naff.

Gooch Week beats it though !

Tell them you're inviting them for Gooch Week and when they look puzzled suggest they look it up .
They'll combust Xmas Shock

(I had to look it up , Revelation )

It's better than Easter which varies too much for my brain to like.

There was a big debate in the early Christian Church about whether Easter should always be three days after Passover (which could be any day of the week), or on the next following Sunday to that...

Oh noooooooooo, I've never heard that before, and I just know I'm always going to think of it this way now.

Yes this is what my friends call it, also the gooch.
The gooch annoys me because that's what it's called in my head, but I'd prefer it wasn't.
