To cancel ebay order

I went to buy heavy antique furniture on eBay (essential but also nice to have). I could just about afford it. After I clicked buy it said something about a freight cost and I need to message the seller for a quote. I’m worried it will be so expensive and I won’t be able to afford it. If it is I’m worried about having to cancel

Just cancel it, it's not an issue.

Hallmark1234 · 28/12/2023 23:30

They may offer a freight service along with collection in person (assuming this is what you intend to do), so check the listing first, but cancel if they insist on shipping it.

I can’t collect it in person

So you knew you couldn’t collect but can’t afford the shipping cost? Why on earth didn’t you contact the seller before you bought it? How did you think it was going to get to you?

The seller will now have spend time getting their eBay fees back, not to mention will have lost all the potential buyers that were watching the initial listing.

dontgobaconmyheart · 29/12/2023 01:10

You're just going to need to contact the seller and ask if they'll cancel OP, or to ask them what the freight cost is going to be. The terms of postage and delivery were presumably visible before you made the purchase, since that is a condition of putting a listing up as a seller. If you can't afford the freight or don't want to proceed then I'd do them the decency of not dithering and make a cancellation request.

unvillage · 29/12/2023 01:23

How did you expect them to get a heavy antique furniture item to you? Wave their magic wand?? Of course you have to pay for the shipping or collect it!

brainworms · 29/12/2023 01:25

Christ.

When will people learn to contact sellers first?

DragonFly98 · 29/12/2023 01:29

What did it say the delivery charge was before you bought it?

PossumintheHouse · 29/12/2023 01:36

Did it specify a delivery charge or say it would be a courier service with a charge based on your location?
What did you expect? They aren’t going to send it for free. A lot of furniture sales on eBay state collection only for this reason.
If you’re in UK mainland, you can expect the delivery fee to be between £50 and £200ish depending on the piece.

Yes, this, essentially. Any time you buy anything online, you always have to account for the cost of postage (or petrol and/or maybe van hire if you have to collect it), unless it clearly says free postage.

I've seen things I've liked before, but they've been one-of-a-kind items and located in the USA or Australia, so obviously very expensive to send to the UK, thus significantly bumping up the cost.

Not trying to get at you, but how did you suppose it was going to work when you'd paid to buy a heavy piece of furniture that was located a distance away from you and/or required a larger vehicle than you have available?

Namchanged · 29/12/2023 01:51

To be honest It didn’t mention a delivery cost it just said it was for delivery

OP posts:
FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 29/12/2023 01:56

Ah, that would have been more helpful of them if they'd given an indication of what delivery would cost - although I guess they didn't know in advance where the eventual buyer would live.

Unless it says free postage, always assume the cost of getting it to your house will be down to you.

....and how far away is the seller from where you are?

Unless it mentions free local delivery, you're nearly always going to have to:

a) collect it
Or
b) pay for a company to deliver it for you.

unvillage · 29/12/2023 01:59

You're on the hook for it, sorry. It will have mentioned that shipping fees were not included. It's not like a simple paypal fee.

peakygold · 29/12/2023 04:38

YABU. You made the seller's day by buying it, and now they have got to be let down and sort out the mess.

lljkk · 29/12/2023 16:08

It's not a big deal to me if people cancel quickly or if they at least tell me they have to cancel unless by freak coincidence it's convenient for seller to cheaply deliver to your location. What can be more annoying is people who take days and don't communicate. What is MOST annoying is buyers who buy something with clearly described faults & then complain about the same faults.

Silverbirchtwo · 29/12/2023 16:17

Just ask how much delivery will be to your address, if you can't afford it say so and apologise for having to cancel. If you can afford it AOK.

What's the big problem?

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 29/12/2023 18:39

Along with those who say they've now realised that it's not the right size for what they wanted/the place they wanted to put it - even though the full measurements were very clearly stated in the listing.

They're like the people on MN who see a thread title and reply to it immediately without even reading the OP, often asking for basic details that are given right there in the OP that they didn't bother to read!
