To ask how to stop gag reflex for salt water rinse?

I have what I think is pericoronitis, as the gum around my partially impacted wisdom tooth is swollen like a balloon. My jaw is also swollen and pain is horrendous. So I’ve been trying the warm salt water rinse and just holding it over the gum. Problem is I’ve a really sensitive gag reflex and I can’t hold the solution for any amount of time. I just vomited violently from trying it again. I had tried five times previously today but just makes me gag uncontrollably! Any tips for keeping it in (both the salt water and the vomit!) so I can get the benefits of it? I know the warm salt water is meant to be amazing and I need some relief from it.

Dentist here. You’d be best getting a plastic syringe (ideally with a spout) - it’s much more effective than rinsing with salt water. It will allow the liquid to get under the opperculum (the bit of gum on top of the tooth) - and less likely to gag! Just keep your mouth open over the sink and repeat multiple times. If you don’t have a spout syringe, the plastic kids ones that come with calpol work well!

@18daychallenge Thanks so much that’s really helpful! I can’t take vomiting again, on top of the pain. It makes it even more miserable than usual! Appreciate the advice 😊

How about a water pik? I got one from my dentist and it's really good.
