I’m on my own with Dd and she has a temperature of 39.2. She’s 12 months and just had mmr yesterday. Given calpol and ibuprofen but not gone down. Had normal liquid intake and only slightly less food than normal. Now off to sleep in cot but I am worried. What to do? I’m calling 111 but long waits.

That wouldn't be A&E for me. Go by how ill she seems and not the number on the thermometer.

PeloMom · 28/12/2023 18:41

Is she playful? Sounds like fluids and food aren’t an issue. If you remove a layer of clothing does it go down?

Zanatdy · 28/12/2023 18:42

No I wouldn’t go to A&E with a temp of that number - I’d wait to speak to 111 unless anything changed

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 28/12/2023 18:43

If she was acting fine, drinking fine, and had a jab yesterday I personally wouldn't have been worried.

RedChester · 28/12/2023 18:43

How long ago did you give the paracetamol and ibuprofen? I wouldn’t be at AED yet, especially if she is happily sleeping. I’d keep an eye on her and let her sleep it off.

RadRad · 28/12/2023 18:44

If it goes over 40', I would but if you keep giving ibuprofen and nurofen alternating in staggered hours, it should come down.

Jojobees · 28/12/2023 18:44

I don’t understand why you think she needs an and e? You know why she’s got a temperature, it’s been less than 3 days in duration and is responding to antipyretic medication.

CCLCECSC · 28/12/2023 18:44

No need for a trip to hospital.

A high temp post vaccine is very normal and to be expected. Its good that their liquid intake is usual. Keep an eye on the temperature overnight and keep up with the alternating calpol and ibuprofen, and liquid as required.

Sorry, meant to say alternating calpol and nurofen, not ibuprofen and nurofen.

The nhs website

Call 111 or your GP surgery now if your child:

  • is under 3 months old and has a temperature of 38C or higher, or you think they have a high temperature
  • is 3 to 6 months old and has a temperature of 39C or higher, or you think they have a high temperature

so 12 months probably not urgent but worth keeping an eye on. If it’s not going down with medicine or there are any other symptoms then call 111

Jellycats4life · 28/12/2023 18:46

Since you know it’s vaccine related and not a virus (or worse, potential meningitis) I wouldn’t recommend putting yourself through the hell of A&E.

Ibuprofen and nurofen are the same thing.

If you need to alternate painkillers, paracetamol/Calpol and then ibuprofen/nurofen.

It’s very likely to be vaccine related but also could be a cold / virus that they caught around the same time.
Do agree a&e probably not necessary though (yet?)

Plumful · 28/12/2023 18:49

No I wouldn’t be worried. Pretty normal after imms to have a temperature.

batsandeggs · 28/12/2023 18:53

Pretty normal especially after vaccine, if intake seems about right and she’s weeing ok (and not super distressed or unusually sleepy) then honestly she’s likely ok. Go with her behaviour rather than the temp. No harm in calling 111 for that reassurance and I wouldn’t worry about the wait to get through, nothing appears urgent enough to warrant A&E.

Hannajp · 28/12/2023 18:54

Thanks, on to 111 now, just on hold. Thank you

Very standard after immunisations 🙃 no point calling 111. If still drinking normal and eating normal the jab effects will wear off. Did this not happen to her with the other two MMRs?

bettynutkins · 28/12/2023 18:59

My daughters temp was about that day after her MMR. How long ago did you give meds? My son takes 60-90 mins for them to kick in.

I'm a worrier so if temp hadn't gone down after an hour I'd want advice even if I knew was MMR.

If you’re still on hold, try doing the online 111 thing instead - I’ve had cause to use that twice this month and in both cases had a callback within half an hour.
