Dry ice in supermarket delivery!?

FrenchFancie · 28/12/2023 17:53

Just got my delivery with an ‘extra’ surprise in the freezer bag - a small bag of dry ice!! It was bloody cold when I grabbed it and gave me a small ice ‘burn’ on my finger. I’ve chucked it outside in the back garden as I seem to remember dry ice is carbon dioxide and it’s possibly not the best thing to be melting all over my kitchen.
AIBU with being cross with Ocado for this? Wasn’t expecting that in my shopping, it must be how they keep products cold. It’s a small white bag marked in red with ‘dry ice - do not touch unless authorised’ - clearly not meant for the public!

would you complain to Ocado? I’m full of the cold and grumpy and can’t decide if I’m being unreasonable being cross.

and if they were going to send me extras I would have préfère wine or ice cream to be frank!

Yes, of course you need to complain. Send them an email ASAP. It is something they need to be aware of.

Sk8erboi · 28/12/2023 18:03

I dont think you need to complain however an email to let them know so they can make sure it doesn't happen again would be ok

eddiemairswife · 28/12/2023 18:06

It's not poisonous

saltinesandcoffeecups · 28/12/2023 18:09

You grabbed a bag that was marked dry ice? I get it with my subscription meals in every shipment and it’s perfectly safe if handled correctly.

Characterbunting · 28/12/2023 18:13

A small amount evaporating in a large well ventilated space isn't a problem.

FrenchFancie · 28/12/2023 18:13

Yes I hadn’t seen it was dry ice, wasn’t expecting it, thought it was something else. There’s little holes in the side of the bag and my finger made contact with the dry ice, hence the small ice burn (is it a burn when it’s ice?)

I’m not massively hurt or anything, just didn’t know that it was possible to be in there.

I think you are being melodramatic
Yeah a dry ice burn nips a bit but only for a few minutes
I wouldn't deliberately get someone in trouble over it

countvoncount · 28/12/2023 18:34

Not unreasonable to be cross, don't think it warrants a complaint.
A tad dramatic.

Yes if it was in your freezer bag they are added to keep things frozen. It’s perfectly normal. I’m sure you were startled by it, but there will be no lasting damage if it was short contact.

If you have kids take them out in the back with a big pot of water and chuck it in after unwrapping it carefully. It’s a good lesson on gasses.

ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm · 28/12/2023 18:56

This happened to us. We reported it to Ocado and they sent us a voucher and said they’d investigate how it happened.

I don't think there is anything wrong with reporting it so someone can be reminded to do their job properly.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/12/2023 19:04

YABU to have chucked it outside. Much more fun to put in a sink / bath of hot water and play with it Wink

SweetFemaleAttitude · 28/12/2023 19:18

It was just an accident. It wouldn't cross my mind to complain and possibly get someone in trouble.

If you'd made a mistake in your job, wouldn't you want to know, so you could prevent it happening again? Why would it be getting someone in trouble?

LangMayYerLumReek2024 · 29/12/2023 12:43

Definitely complain

Your shopping should t cause injuries

Lavenderosemary · 29/12/2023 13:00

It's Christmas, the crazy busiest time of year. The staff were probably working flat out and long hours. It shouldn't have happened, probably doesn't usually happen...I wouldn't be looking to get someone a post Christmas bollocking over it though. If it happened again, then I might address it.

MrsKwazi · 29/12/2023 13:02

So dramatic! It’s just some dry ice!

OdeToBarney · 29/12/2023 13:15

Yanbu OP. What if dc had grabbed it and injured themselves? I'd report it to Ocado.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 29/12/2023 13:18

Seems a bit dramatic. If it says on it do not touch then do not touch. A dry ice burn like that will disappear after a couple of minutes.
