If you say, ‘Jane is on her way’

And somebody replies, ‘oh right then, and what’s the good news?’ with a bit of a smirk…

Would you take that to mean they don’t like Jane? It threw me a bit and I never asked, just laughed it off

Yes, they don't like Jane.

ancientnames · 27/12/2023 14:11

Yes I would interpret it as you have.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/12/2023 14:12

They are not looking forward to seeing Jane

Sandia1 · 27/12/2023 14:12

If they are prone to sarcasm, it could just be a joke.

DonnaBanana · 27/12/2023 14:13

Depends how it was said. People who genuinely like each other will quite often crack jokes like this about each other if it’s their style.

DuploTrain · 27/12/2023 14:14

Either they don’t like Jane.

Or they’re a “banter” kind of person who thinks they’re hilarious.

CaptainThomasPatButtonHall · 27/12/2023 14:15

They don't like Jane. Even as banter or sarcasm this is the only way to interpret it.

Doggymummar · 27/12/2023 14:15

It could mean yep I've heard that before, Jane is probably still in the shower, she is always late

Itsallfunngamesuntil · 27/12/2023 14:15

Totally depends on context

I could say this as a joke if i liked the person or I could say it if I didn't like the person

So impossible to say. Depends on situation

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/12/2023 14:17

This is hilarious banter hiding in plain sight that they don’t particularly like Jane - imo.

OldBeyondMyYears · 27/12/2023 14:20

It all depends on whether or not they like Jane 🤷‍♀️

It's not something I've ever said, but I can imagine saying it in a joking way, eg if one of my kids messaged me and said 'I'm on the way'...but we have this kind of relationship, and often joke with each other. Another example is that I pretend that I'm going to move house and not leave a forwarding address for them and so on. They do similar things...but as we have a strong and loving relationship, it's just fun.

However, I can also imagine saying it if someone told me that my brother was 'on the way'! In which case I'd definitely mean it...I can't think of anything worse than spending a minute in his appalling company!!

So, yeah...it completely depends on the relationship between the speaker and Jane 🤷‍♀️

Seas164 · 27/12/2023 14:21

I would take it to mean that Jane being on her way was bad news.

Gardeningtime · 27/12/2023 14:22

They were not enthusiastic about Jane arriving.

Jane is very smelly and has terrible banter.

WhateverMate · 27/12/2023 17:10

Only you'll have an idea whether they were joking or they don't actually like her, surely?

Could be one or the other to us.

AhBiscuits · 27/12/2023 17:11

Depends on the relationship. It could be a harmless joke or they could actually hate Jane.

Itiswhysofew · 27/12/2023 17:14

Who said it & how do they normally behave?

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2023 17:18

Bit of a smirk like this….Grin ?

Ponoka7 · 27/12/2023 17:20

I'd take it as banter. It's something we'd say in our group. If you are Jane and it's been repeated to you, tell the shit stirrer that in future you don't want to know. If you were there and it bothers you so much you should have asked at the time.
