Last minute holiday booking to Sri Lanka or Mexico - vaccines??!

We are hoping to book a last minute holiday to either of the above (leaving around the 8th Jan) and just mentally going through all the processes - insurance, flights, airport parking, etc - and got to looking at vaccines and I hadn't realised that they should be done 6-8weeks before departure.... Does this mean we can't go away??! DH has to take his holiday in Jan so can't put it off and can't l couldn't book before now as had something going on in the background that meant we weren't sure till a few days ago that we could go anywhere but it's all sorted now and we're super keen to go!

What have others done in this situation? Desperate for time away and have been thinking about these two places all year!

I think they are recommend but you obviously don’t have to follow the advice if your willing to take the risk.

Catza · 27/12/2023 10:54

Vaccines aren't mandatory as far as I know so up to you if you want to take a risk.
I previously travelled to Asia without vaccinations

Christmasdistress · 27/12/2023 10:57

Mexico I don't think you need any particular ones

Sri Lanka only tetanus advised, which you can read up on the risks for and may have had multiple boosters over your lifetime anyway.

Wouldn't bother me, personally, to go without having them, but depends on your risk profiles and whether there are any vulnerabilities.

We go to Mexico most years and went to Sri Lanka a few years ago.

No compulsory vaccines for either except during covid of course

dementedpixie · 27/12/2023 11:00

We were in mexico in November. Didn't have vaccines for it

HumanbyDesign · 27/12/2023 11:29

Thanks for responses! We are low risk but do have two children aged 9&10.... Thinking tetanus and anti malaria will be ok...??!

Don't think you need anti malarials for either of them

NewIdeasToday · 27/12/2023 11:36

Mexico is great with kids and no vaccinations are needed. You might want to look for a hotel with at least one heated pool at this time of year. The Caribbean is also lovely in January eg St Lucia.

Spaghettieis · 27/12/2023 11:37

We had tetanus, typhoid and hep A for Mexico, no need for anti malaria. If you’re going to a resort and only drinking bottles water you can probably get away with only tetanus.

madamepresident · 27/12/2023 11:38

You'll be fine - just else loads of mosquito repellent if you go to Sri Lanka as it's very humid.

madamepresident · 27/12/2023 11:39

*need

WonderingWanda · 27/12/2023 13:58

Where in Mexico are you going? We didn't have any for Mexico. Your kids will be up to date for tetanus if they are up to date with UK vaccines and if you are going to Yucatan then it's immaculately clean and easy to access healthcare, I wouldn't be worrying about things like typhoid.

MabelMoo23 · 27/12/2023 18:03

We went to Mexico in the summer with kids - whilst you can probably avoid most of them, I would always have Hep A

Mumaway · 27/12/2023 18:05

If staying in resorts in Mexico no special vaccine or anti-malarials required
