To not do party bags?

Every party DD has gone to (she’s turning 7) there have been party bags. Just a pack of crisps, a few sweets and something small to play with like bubbles. She likes getting them.

She’s having her bday party tomorrow (the first time she’s had a party) and I just realised I didn’t think to do party bags and I really don’t want to! I just see them as needless tat and no one needs more bubbles or sweets!

AIBU to just not do them?

For all the reasons given, you need to do something.

DS attended one party where there were no party bags and every kid was confused and upset.

He attended another where there were none but there was a lucky dip box. He got a shit toy (a medal) and asked for another.

We went to another where the kids got a wrapped present on their way out. They were Pez dispensers and went down a treat.

So your daughter loves receiving them at parties, yet you can't be bothered to do them for children that come to her party??!

Wtf?

toomanyleggings · 27/12/2023 11:19

I would definitely do them. I had 3 children over when dd was 2 for some cake. Not a party just cake and some toys. At home time two of them asked for a party bag. I was mortified to not have them.

SteadyEddi · 27/12/2023 11:19

my experience is that kids adjust to different things quite quickly and there is no upset

HMW1906 · 27/12/2023 11:20

It is needless tat but kids love them.

I spent slightly more than I normally would for the party ‘bags’ at my sons recent party and got them a colouring book and crayons instead so it was something slightly more useful than the usual tat (all from the works in their offers). We’ve also been given a book before in lieu of a party ‘bag’ (again from the works 10 for £10 books).

Chocolate selection boxes work well at this time of year. No faff, guaranteed to please and probably reduced somewhere like B&M.

All adults know that party bags are shit, tat filled nonsense. All kids absolutely love them and they are one of the best parts of a party. My 11 year old still goes on about the party that didn't do bags that she went to when she was around 6!

DS still mentions the party that did lucky dips instead of party bags. He got a plastic medal, looked at it and rudely said it was rubbish and wanted to put it back and have another go.

I made him apologise for being rude but he was right; it was rubbish.

I never understood the party bags. The event is for the birthday girl/boy so I don't see why guests should receive presents. Doesn't make any sense and we don't do the same for adults attending our parties (or do we?).

what kind of illogical argument is this? There are plenty of things that are done at children's parties and not at adults, and vice versa,
although as a pp said, wedding favours are the closest equivalent to party bags for grown ups!

HRTQueen · 27/12/2023 12:22

Iin the last few years I gave them a tube of smarties and a piece of cake and not in a bag

they were happy with than as long as they have something in their hands

and no more crap left in the back of their parents car

HelloOhHell · 27/12/2023 13:29

My friend told me they’re not really “done” anymore… for her 6 year olds last party she gave out books with a personalised “thanks for coming to XYZ’s party” sticker which was nice.

I still gave out a party bags against her professional advice (😂) but wasn’t ott with any useless toys which end up getting binned anyway. I added a pencil with cute eraser on top, bubbles, a couple of glow sticks, and the cake.

I agree that theyre a great way to signal the end of a party

If you go to a highstreet sweatshop they may have some sweet cones ready made up, if you have time possibly just grab a few of them. They will be perfect or an independent one will likely do it for you there and then if no time. I know it’s probably annoying rushing around but kids do really enjoy them and the announcement of collection at the party usually means “time to go 😂”. The parents don’t care tho it’s the children.

Did not mean sweat shop!!

Forgive me but it is not custom to do this in other countries so I fail to see the logic behind giving a gift to the guests at your birthday party. I am just trying to make sense of a tradition that only seems to be customary in English-speaking countries. Your argument (or lack thereof) doesn't exactly tell me why this is necessary so I continue being baffled by the proposition.

A piece of cake and a tub of bubbles is absolutely fine. Reduces the tat quota immensely, especially since its already sky-high at this time of year!

Perfect party bag contents. Cake gets eaten, bubbles get blown, container goes in the recycling. End of.

babybons · 14/03/2024 11:04

Punch balloons, fill with rice, slice of cake.. well actually I always did shop bought muffins, less mess in the car.
