To ask my mum if I can return christmas presents?

I don’t want to sound ungrateful or hurt her feelings, but there are a few christmas presents I really don’t need.

  1. A pink woollen jumper. Lovely yes, but I have four identical ones now. All from the same shop. Three of them bought by her within the last ten years. I only wear two of them and the other I forgot about and found in a drawer here when I was visiting my mum. I feel like it’s a waste of £50 accepting it/not returning.
  2. A new handbag for work that really isn’t my style. Again, I’d rather she keep the money.
  3. A multipack of under vests, I literally have 50 of them already and no room for them. I’m perfectly happy with my current ones and really don’t need more.

I think in most cases, giving gifts is actually equally for the buyer to feel good.

Sell them on Vinted, but unless you know your mum really wouldn’t care, I think telling her is a no no.

I have a couple of things from extended family that won’t fit or I won’t use. I wouldn’t dream of telling them, I’ll just Vinted them.

I’d keep the new vests and throw out some older ones to balance it out. The other two though, yes ask her as surely she’ll want you to have something you like. But only you know your mum.

Don't return them- it obviously makes her happy to give 😊 my late Mum bless her was the same, often repeat gifts but she enjoyed doing it. Give them away or discreetly sell if you really won't use them

But who needs 50 vests? If the shops will take them back just return them for something you do like or a gift card to get something in the future. You could even wear the unworn pink jumper and pretend it’s the one your mum has just given you.

Cattiwampus · 27/12/2023 08:50

Why tell her?
Return the jumper, you have three other identical ones and she won’t know.
Return the handbag, it’s for work so unless she works with you, she won’t know.
Likewise the undervests. If you wear them under your clothes, she won’t know and unless they are a radical,y different design and you regularly parade in front of her in your underwear, she won’t know.
Perhaps next year, you could give her some heavy hints about something you’d like, but why ask her if you can return the gifts and possibly hurt her feelings?

Donate the older items to charity and keep the new ones you've been given.

CecilyP · 27/12/2023 08:51

Why would you go to the trouble of selling them if you can just return them? That would only be plan B for me.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/12/2023 08:51

Yes, giving your mom your pile of presents back and telling her to go and get a refund and keep the money is extremely rude.

Is it possible to exchange in store without a receipt? Sell on Vinted? Regift and use the money you'd have spent to buy yourself something off your Mom?

ColleenDonaghy · 27/12/2023 08:56

I'd only refuse a present of it cost a fortune and would go to waste, or if it was a definite insult.

None of that applies here, so I'd smile and say thank you. Return the jumper. I'd hang on to the handbag in case it would be useful some time but if it definitely won't be then return that too.

No need to hurt your mum's feelings, she's bought you things she thinks you'll like and find useful.
