To ask how we kick out this dreadful 2023 and open our wonderful 2024 with hope?

To me, it seems like 2023 has been rough. Like, really rough. The worst.

Instead of having a pity party, in the six days left, shall we share practical and spiritual ways to close the damn door and open 2024 with new hope?

Would love to hear your ideas. Hopefully I'll be inspired, too.

Apparently in the old days on the stroke of midnight, people open the back door (to let the old year out) and ask the first dark haired man to be seen to come through the front door carrying salt, coal and bread.

Oooooookey......

I'm willing to try anything at this stage!

Bankholidayhelp · 30/12/2023 15:24

Something (ever)green as well if doing first footing.

Personally I'm aiming for being more 'present'. Rather than doom scrolling

Also I've heard this type of phrase used in business but never thought to put it to personal use - '80 years of doing the same thing every year isn't living'

I spent last year booking things and then not going to them ... Total waste of money.

So as well as being present I'm also going to say yes. And mean it and not cop out when it comes to the crunch.

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 31/12/2023 07:16

I’m also going to do the Year Compass!
I heard you should put coins outside your window, so you bring money in for the new year.
But I think I may just light a candle and change the bedsheets. Unless I get any good ‘woo’ suggestions on here!

AceofPentacles · 31/12/2023 07:30

Ok I can do some woo

To clear out the old energy of this year ring a bell in all the rooms of your home

To welcome in prosperity, blow a pinch of cinnamon through your front door on the first of the month

I had some real ups and downs this year, including a complete nervous breakdown.

I am cheering myself up by:

  • thinking about the Spring (I live by the sea so it will be lovely)
  • think about the general election and finally seeing the back of the Tories. I think that will bring some optimism back to everyone. they have just sucked the joy out of life for the past decade...
  • continuing to put my physical and mental health first: I do pilates once a week with a lovely teacher & group of people, I listen to guided meditation sessions on Youtube to start and end the day and I eat as healthily as I can
  • I am looking for a new job. Current one is beyond boring and a source of stress so I am telling myself new year, new job!

Apparently it's bad luck to do washing on new year's day. So avoid the washing machine at all costs on 1st January. This is a superstition that I can get behind.

Just for additional safety, I'd extend it for a week or two.

lesdeluges · 31/12/2023 09:01

Whenever I feel a bit down about the way the world can be, and start to worry a bit about family and life in general (dark dreary January can do that), I write a list of positives.

Good health
Family OK
No debts
Not struggling financially (much!).
Can pay bills,
Have food in the fridge and cupboards.
Have a raincoat,
Have a hat
Have a Brolly and waterproof shoes and boots

And many other things like that.

There are negatives, many i suppose, but I park them until January is over, and crack on dealing with them then.

bornonvalentines · 31/12/2023 20:12

I wanted to wish you all the best and happiest new year. I'm wearing red underwear and have written a gratitude and manifestation list: they will certainly work!

Much Love and light to all on this thread x

First footing! My mum talks about this (but doesn't call it that). Apparently she used to be the one who had to do the honours. I need extra luck as I am seeing my neuro surgeon in 2 days so be will be asking dark haired DP had maybe even darker Dcat to leave via the patio and come in the front.

Back21970 · 31/12/2023 22:19

My thoughts are that after quite a few years of doom and gloom we must all surely be due a good 2024!

Best wishes for a great New Year to everyone ❤️

People are way too bossy with their opinions about how others should behave.
Do little bits of good and stop hating everyone else.
I would also suggest reading "Travels With Charlie"

Give something to charity. Even if it's a few pennies in a tin or the cheapest thing you can find for the food bank if you're skint.

There's always someone worse off and helping someone is empowering and apparently it's good energy and karma, if you believe in such things.
