To think NHS workers aren’t ‘hero’s’ for working Christmas Day?!

Reindeerlighthouse · 25/12/2023 20:27

Just that. I have quite a few Nurses on my friend’s lists on social media and a few of them have posted today about how they’ve been working. Que loads of ‘omg, you’re an absolute angel’ ‘omg, you’re a true hero lovely’ type comments on all of their posts.

Am I being dim? They’ve been rostered on, they’re just doing their jobs on a day they’ve been rota’d onto, why are they ‘hero’s’ for that? It’s literally their job. I’m not saying their job doesn’t deserve credit because it absolutely does, but I’m sure if they’d have refused to work Christmas Day they’d have been facing disciplinary action?

My husband has worked the last 5 Christmas days (not medical related) no one has ever said he’s a hero for working it.

AIBU to think ti really doesn’t make them a hero? Just people doing their jobs on a day they’ve been told to do it?

Can’t beat a good nurse/nhs bashing thread on Christmas Day 🙄

Gaslight us all you want, you're being shitty about kids.

Gaslight 😂

Look, it’s perfectly simple. OP doesn’t like people giving extra praise to nurses holding the fort at Christmas.

I think that’s shitty.

Yes, nurses get paid. But only an idiot would think nurses get paid what they deserve in terms of money or respect. This is undoubtedly partly due to our unequal society.

Why is that so hard for you to understand?!

I make no bones about telling the kids I teach that they are privileged. They don’t cry about it. They’re very happy about it tbh.

Grow up.

Vistada · 25/12/2023 23:18

OK let's reverse the roles

A privately educated inner city school teacher comes on here and says

"Tower block tracey poor kids have no chance as ceo (insert other private school only job here)

That's OK is it? Or is it only inverse snobbery allowed

Do you understand the term ‘punching down’?

I’m not sure what you’re getting at on the first part of your post? That people injured by the NHS who now can’t work shouldn’t be compensated? Too right NHS staff should tiptoe around not harming people. Here’s a tip - don’t be medically negligent if you don’t want to be sued for medical negligence

If you didn’t follow the LL trial then I suggest you look it up.

Yes, like I said, some people rightly sue. Some people sue at the drop of a hat. Either way, this isn't my idea of hero worship.

I suggest if you are going to say LL used her 'hero status' to cover up her crimes, you come with a bit of evidence to back it up. Rather than claiming things, then telling people to go on a wild goose chase to find the evidence for your claim. She was a serial killer who used her position as a NICU nurse to kill vulnerable premature babies who could not speak.

I’m sorry, what?

Gotcha? Can you explain? I’ve only ever mentioned nurses. Those high-paid doctors aren’t running the wards tonight, you know!

I don’t think you understand debate or discussion. We can’t talk about every individual person here, can we? We’re talking trends and generalisations. So, no, every single student in a private school won’t benefit from a ‘leg-up’, as it were?! But the basic premise that private school confers an advantage is, as I suggested, well known. With me so far?

Then, I think, you tried to insult my children!! I assume that’s what you meant with your ‘not the children of teachers’ comment 😱😱Naughty naughty!! So, are you saying that my children won’t benefit from private school because their mother is just a teacher?! Beginning to see where your attitude to nurses fits in!

Oh - and slow hand clap for being the one who brought up Lucy Letby! Nice touch.

Oh so not we are pretending doctors aren’t relevant. You think doctors don’t work on Christmas Day?? Really?

So, no, every single student in a private school won’t benefit from a ‘leg-up’, as it were?! But the basic premise that private school confers an advantage is, as I suggested, well known. With me so far?

But you are apparently putting your kids through private education precisely to get them a leg up - I’m saying that’s a stupid expectation to go in with and one that is far less likely to be provided to a teacher’s child unless you or your OH are Very Important or Wealthy somehow

So, are you saying that my children won’t benefit from private school because their mother is just a teacher?!

No. stop making things up. Very ‘naughty naughty’ as you’d say (lol!)

My point (which was quite obvious, but I’ll break it down for you) is YOUR expectation is that your children will get a ‘leg up’ for being privately educated. I’m saying they likely won’t because leg-ups are largely about status and wealth and a teacher family doesn’t tend to have the status for example that a millionaire/politician family has. Not an insult to your kids. I mean if the ONLY reason you privately educate your kids (though I suspect it’s likely the generous discount you probably get) is to ‘get them a leg up’ then they won’t BY YOUR STANDARDS ‘benefit from private education’, no.

Why can’t we bring up Lucy Letby? Is it too inconvenient to point out that “NHS workers are Christmas angels…but not Lucy and DONT MENTION HER”

GreenAppleCrumble · 25/12/2023 23:34

Tbh when people start bringing Lucy Letby into a discussion about how nurses are regarded in general, I think we’ve hit rock bottom.

What on EARTH has any of that got to do with private education?!

I make no bones about telling the kids I teach that they are privileged.

Wow! I hope you’re fucking kidding. A teacher teaching children that money (not wealth - not all privately educated kids are wealthy) equates to privilege? Gross. there will be pupils you have said that to who are being abused at home, or who are having suicidal thoughts and who probably don’t feel very privileged and a teacher of all people implying they’re the lucky few, because “hey everything is definitely better for you because your parents are loaded” is absolutely shocking. It’s all about how you feel about them and not at all about them. You’re sending them the message (even if you don’t mean to imply this) to their adolescent minds that their so-called advantage negates any issues they may have.

They don’t cry about it. They’re very happy about it tbh

They ALL say “Yes Miss I’m happy about that”. Sure. You’re one of those teachers that makes sweeping assumptions and doesn’t listen, by the sounds of it. If they aren’t happy with their announcement of “you have privilege” they aren’t telling you, because frankly who the fuck WOULD pour their hearts out to someone who thinks they couldn’t possibly have anything but an advantage in life

What like when a teacher in a position of power and influence ‘punches down’ to actual children by putting them all in the same box, without truly knowing what they may be experiencing in life? That kind of punching down?

What a lot of nonsense!

Private school confers advantage. I can go after that advantage. I can’t go after the other advantage you mention (being a millionaire etc), no. It’s still not clear why you made the latter point. (It is!! It was a dig!!!)

Now, you’ve spent a lot of words there telling me why my kids won’t benefit from private school.

But can you explain why you are against nurses getting a little high-five today?!

Yes, yes - ok - and the doctors! But you and I both know that a) they’re mostly not cleaning up sick for little more than minimum wage and b) have a prospect of a much more generous salary ahead.

Thing is, I came into this thread to object to people taking away nurse’s praise. You came on to… what was it again?

Oh but I was a bit offhand about rich boys. Sorry.

Why? She was a nurse was she not?

Otd a discussion about over-worshipping all people in one profession. It doesn’t kill anyone to remind people that not all people in one profession are good or ‘angels’

I’m generalising yes. In a discussion about societal dynamics. Don’t worry - I do tend to know the actual individual children in my care. And I like them too! So you can shelve your fake concern.

Oh but I was a bit offhand about rich boys. Sorry.

Private school confers advantage. I can go after that advantage.

I really wouldn’t grasp at that expectation if I were you - things are levelling out and unless it’s a public schools the leg-ups will be few and far between and increasingly smaller circles. Your kids still have to work extremely hard if for example they want to be doctors.

Now, you’ve spent a lot of words there telling me why my kids won’t benefit from private school.

Not in the way you are expecting. You are expecting they get a leg-up. You should concentrate on them working hard instead. Far more likely to succeed than sitting around thinking “Hopefully one of their mates’ dads will get them into a good job”

But can you explain why you are against nurses getting a little high-five today?!

No. because I’m not. I’m against the OTT hero worshipping and have explained quite clearly why that is. People can high five as many nurses as they like but this tiresome “they’re such heroes” rhetoric is counter productive

Yes, yes - ok - and the doctors! But you and I both know that a) they’re mostly not cleaning up sick for little more than minimum wage and b) have a prospect of a much more generous salary ahead.

Well actually you and I DON’T know that. Or at least you don’t. Do you know how much junior doctors earn and how long they’ll be paying student debt off for (I’ll give you a clue - much longer than a nurse)? And Why do you think they wouldn’t clean sick up? It’s a shame you don’t value HCPs unless they do the most revolting jobs. If you needed surgery tomorrow, it isn’t a nurse who’ll be performing it and saving your life - it’ll maybe be a rich boy that you sneer at so much.

Thing is, I came into this thread to object to people taking away nurse’s praise. You came on to… what was it again?

Point out how the hero worshipping is ludicrous and counter productive - especially for NHS workers. My intent was quite clear, I’m surprised you had to ask

Heroic = people risking their lives for others. Such as lifeboat crews, mountain rescue, fire brigade, those occasions when other emergency services have to attend life-threatening incidents; and the military literally in the line of fire.

Not heroic = people doing their usual job which happens to be on Christmas Day, but which doesn't involve any of the above.

YANBU.

And I used to be a midwife. It's just the job. We all knew when we training Christmas, new years and public holidays were fair game.

TheHateIsNotGood · 26/12/2023 00:43

Can we keep the noise down please - for some peace and quiet I'll say yes, every NHS worker, that ever lived is a hero. Can the rest of us get some sleep now please - particularly those currently stuck in hospital, it's not as if many people choose to need hospitalizatiom over xmas, although some do.

Just keep the noise/racket down you NHS 'heros' - sleep aids recovery.....

claretblue79 · 26/12/2023 01:05

I really don’t understand why this is even an issue. Yes it’s someone doing their job but we would be lost without them doing it. Just seems like a lot of frothing from the OP over nothing
